im surprised anyone is surprised

off clay hes probably not even top 30. his ranking is only as high as it is because of this incredible deep ultra-strong field we've had lately

Karatsev happened. He'd already won his second round match with a WTA-like 0, 1 and 0 so I had identified this as a potential upset... the man is playing unreal for a qualifier debutant.

In this case he hit a bunch of winners off Diego's serve, and, eh, everywhere else for good measure.

If he can keep up with his recent performances, absolutely. Maybe he's just a flash in the pan, but he might as well be a surprise AO finalist - haven't had one of those in a while.
From what I've just read [article in french] he had some good challenger performances in 2015, then he got a very bad knee injury and floated between the 300th and 800th rank during the next 5 years.

He started finding a better form in summer 2020 and finished the season with 180 ranking positions gained in 12 months.

He may become the only player in the 21st century to reach a Slam quarterfinal on his first appearance.

This guy is red hot and Dimmy/Timmy should seriously watch out for him.

Aslan got tired of being a lion and living in Narnia and became a pro tennis player from Russia. :-D
These fast-ish courts suit his game. He can definitely beat FAA.
