Retired in 4th set. So unromantic from him. Maybe some injury issue
Unromantic lmao is he supposed to go on a date with the tennis ball or what?
Should've ordered a glass of red wine instead of a can of Coca Cola.Retired in 4th set. So unromantic from him. Maybe some injury issue
That video was like 5 years old btw. Social media will destroy us alli see him on facetok doing silly dance on expensive boat with wife. maybe he do injury jumping around like crazy to celebrate big payday and forget he is 38?!
remember he is old and dercrepits. old men should not do silly dances.
Yeah, not everyone looks at the ball the way Paolo Lorenzi did before a serveUnromantic lmao is he supposed to go on a date with the tennis ball or what?
Beat him at first go and don't over celebrate until it's done fully.Never know with Monpossum. He's always bending over at the waist after a rally, breathing hard like he might have a heart attack or something. He had his moment in the sun in that last match.
He had a long 5 5 set 1st Rd, long 4 sets in 3rd Rd sun.Completely toasted physically.
Age nothing. It's really simple. Age happened, and father time is undefeated. An older player might be able to string together a title at a BO3 or even a nice run in a BO5, but for a slam title, recovery is going to be a problem at some point.
How many players have won ATP titles at 38?Age nothing.
This guy has retired from 27 matches
Is this all time infamous record? He would retire just the same at 20 or 25 or 30 or 35.
He is fit I will tell you that. How many players have won ATP titles at 38?

This is my point, it's a very very short list because old age cannot be overcomeFederer and Monfils have! (Gonzales and Rosewall also won pro events at 38+ before the formation of the ATP).
He's 38, doesn't matter how fit he is or isn't. Recovery becomes slower and slower. It's undeniable for a player unless they're juicingHe is fit I will tell you that.
27 retirements in career. Never too serious everHe's 38, doesn't matter how fit he is or isn't. Recovery becomes slower and slower. It's undeniable for a player unless they're juicing
i think poster meant not "courageous", "gallant", "adventurous" of Monfils, or something in that vein.Should've ordered a glass of red wine instead of a can of Coca Cola.
amazing record that Roger fedrer never retired in his matches and he played till 39 years27 retirements in career. Never too serious ever
I know that 27 > 13. But what's the threshold for retirements that makes a player not serious? Would Novak be less serious if he had 14? 15? Or is 27 the number?27 retirements in career. Never too serious ever

Simply always being injured is my criticism of monfils. No one is saying he matches Djokovic in almost anything. I'm just wondering what your standard is for retirements since you're criticizing monfils for it and also how you've determined it's "the standard" for whether or not we can take a player seriously. Is it just arbitrarily based on Djokovic being unimpeachable in general?
What an odd choice of words.

True, but I think 35-38 is the tipping point. There are only a few that have won ATP titles at 38, and zero that have won a slam at that age. Seems to be pretty close to a current threshold for competitive abilityThis is obviously true at a certain point, although the point at which it is true is much later in life than it used to be (in tennis, and in other sports, and in non-sporting life). So, I think it's more true to say "Father Time always gets his person in the end" than "Father Time is undefeated." To my mind, many players have defeated Father Time, although not forever.

Not many, Rosewall and Gonzalez are the only two I can think of. Rosewall won 6 titles after turning 40, Pancho won some too.How many players have won ATP titles at 38?
True, though Rosewall did reach two slam finals at 39.8 and 39.10True, but I think 35-38 is the tipping point. There are only a few that have won ATP titles at 38, and zero that have won a slam at that age. Seems to be pretty close to a current threshold for competitive ability

He simply couldn’t compete any longer with his body as it was. It’s not smart to continue playing when the match is a foregone conclusion and you start risking injury.
This is before my time, so I'm genuinely asking but wasn't Rosewall playing in the S&V era which would have allowed for much shorter points she less baseline grinding? Not many, Rosewall and Gonzalez are the only two I can think of. Rosewall won 6 titles after turning 40, Pancho won some too.
True, but Ken had a weak serve so didn't Serve and Volley as much as the other big servers. Still though he was very good at the net so did volley more than today's players after he worked his way up to the net. This is before my time, so I'm genuinely asking but wasn't Rosewall playing in the S&V era which would have allowed for much shorter points she less baseline grinding?
Not a surprise? Shelton is not better than Fritz and never will be ranked in top 5. I'd take Fritz's serve. Not a chance for BS, just the normal American sports media hype like there's not 10-15 players better in the world. Then they become surprised when he loses. His best shot is always the USO just like Tiafoe or Fritz.Yes, I agree. Monfils is doing very well for his age, and while this was something of an opportunity to do even better, it's not really surprising that he couldn't last or that he couldn't beat Shelton. A shame (to my mind), but not much of a surprise.
Federer had a slam title within his grasp the month before he turned 38, so it might be possible for Djokovic, but not for someone like Monfils, who even at his best never made a slam final.
Never know with Monpossum. He's always bending over at the waist after a rally, breathing hard like he might have a heart attack or something. He had his moment in the sun in that last match.
Should the keyboard be taken away from you? You are no ‘Speller’.Take that spear away from him,, he's no Worrier

Not sure that makes that any better. Are we expecting a code of honour from tennis players? What are we, medieval knights jousting?Sounds like they’re using the term “romantic” in its historical sense - of grandure, mysterious, dramatic, idealistic, not practical or sensible
