What happened with Wawrinka?

The 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 scoreline is really strange and slightly suspicious. Did he run out of gas, get injured, or did it look fixed? I can't find the match anywhere so anyone who has details please let me know.

The year Stan won the French he had a rather poor showing coming into Paris. He is not a constant week in week out player who beats everyone he should and then challenges the top players. He is the epitome of hot and cold. He managed to blow hot for three fortnights in Melbourne 14, Paris 15 and NYC 16. He almost did it again for 6 matches in Paris 17. He had several other decent runs at Slams but he is VERY stinky week in week out. It is too hard to tell is he really done or does he have one or two more surprise runs left.

Goffin played pretty rubbish in the first set, then picked up in the second.

Wawrinka was fine in the first set but then just lot his **** completely, like he'd forgotten all timing. Ball after ball overhit or into the doubles alleys. Picked up a bit halfway through the third set but by then it was way too late.

young lass taking all his mojo then none left for 3rd sets!
Seriously a Yonex 95D at 370+gsm and 60lbs rpm is not the easiest racquet setup to master
if he is not peaking physically and mentally this combo is surely a huge detriment.
Definitely not a plush setup!!
The latest vcore 95 with some weight and lower string tension is way more forgiving
however he obviously loves his 95D and like Fed going larger maybe he should be using a vcore 98.

Goffin decided to go for a double bagel after the first set but Wawrinka managed to hold out to avoid it with 2 games. He's lucky, Berdych wasn't so lucky when Goffin decided to go for it immediately. The guy will destroy you out of nowhere.

Stan's post knee surgery movement is what keeps happening. The serve hasn't gone anywhere and he can still unleash hell with his ground strokes but the reality is if his opponent can consistently get him on the move he's in trouble because he simply can't defend as well as he used to and that makes it harder for him to setup opportunities to attack... it also means he's nervier than he once was because he feels under pressure to hit winners earlier than is sensible.

However, given the current quality in the field and that the big 3 aren't dominating quite as overtly as they once did (though this may allow them to be mentally fresher for big matches, so swings and roundabouts) I could still see him winning a big tournament or two just standing in the middle of the baseline hammering unnatural winners but Stan's simply no longer capable of playing the kind of tennis where his destiny is largely in his own hands rather than at the mercy of how the other guy is playing.

The best loss is a loss to Jack Sock :)
No one has suffered that ignominy in 2019. The dude vultured the USTA reciprocal WC for AO by winning 3 matches at Bercy’18, played and lost one match in Melbourne and hasn’t played since. Before Bercy he had never won two matches in a row the whole season. The incredible collapse of Saggy Sock.

It's simple. Stan's movement was never elite so to speak, but the knee surgery pretty much ruined the little movement he still possessed. Now with his poor movement he can't get to the ball in time to hit his miraculous powerful shots and thus is getting exposed by everyone.

And he doesn't have Roger's talent and variety to compensate for his terrible movement either, so here he is.

Doubtful he will ever win a title again to be honest. Poor guy.

Is that even possible? I think that match broke the camel's back, but not the root cause.
For both it was gradual attrition over their careers. Yeah, one match doesn’t disable you but it was the last slam tournament where either played deep into the second weekend. Andy made Wimby QFs but lost breadstick fourth and fifth sets to Querrey in his last match of the season. Stan got steamrolled by Nadal in the final and then lost 1R at Queen’s and Wimby before shutting it down for surgery.

It's like blaming the 2016 AO semis for Federer's knee. That was just the last bit of strain from the previous 2 years of playing LOTS of tennis.

His lateral movement has decreased to the Raonic level and it's as easy as ever to exploit his position on the court, so his results suffer enormously.
Goffin usually finds great angles which this Stan certainly cannot cover, so no wonder he lost the match.

No, now he's 34 and hasn't made past the R32 of a Slam in 2 years. This is more than just inconsistency.
