What has happened to Nishikori?

#1
Just watched some highlights of US Open 2014 and Madrid 2014 Final and am in awe at Nishikori at that time.

What happened to him? his forehand seems garbage now compared to what it was.

Would have one at least 2 slams if he maintained that level of play.

1. Lacks rhythm and confidence due often skipping big chunks of tournaments
2. In 2014 was the new guy and Big 4 werent used to his style, routines and behaviour
3. Djokovic - remove him and Nishikori would have won plenty of big titles in 2015-2016-2018

Simply put, he's 29 and coming off a wrist injury. The wrist is never the same after surgery. He keeps battling injuries, and his style of play is grinding. Seems pretty clear, doesn't it!?

I think this is mostly correct, however I think he may score another big run. It depends a lot in trying to build some rhythm and confidence and to do so he have to be able to finish a couple of tournaments without getting any kind of injury, something that seems almost impossible.

Injuries. I remember the blisters on his feet in long matches, matches he won I might add.

That and the roadblocks in front of him. All in all I think given his injuries he's done pretty well. 4 Masters Finals losing twice to Nadal and Novak. Three semifinal or better runs at the USO, losing a final to Cilic after beating Novak then losing to eventual champions Novak and Wawrinka.

Yeah if he's more healthy he has more runs, maybe a Masters title but probably no Slams still.

Regarding the bolded, only 2016 qualifies. And none of those big titles would be a slam. In 2015 Novak wasn't really a problem for Nishikori as Kei lost more times to the field than Novak. Only played Novak twice that year. As for 2018, he wasn't winning any of the tournaments in which he lost to Novak.

Wow just realized that by almost every metric, Dominic Thiem is a better player than Kei. Both career high #4, made a slam final - but Thiem has a masters.
