What if a Grand Slam draw was completely random?

This is just for a bit of fun, in no way am I suggesting that this SHOULD be done or anything like that, it's just a simple 'what-if?'

I was bored and had a bit of time so here is what i did:

Generate a random list of numbers from 1-128

Take the top 128 players from the ATP entry rankings for the week of 19th January 2009 (they all get direct entry, i'm assuming no qualifiers for the sake of simplicity)

Assign the randomly generated numbers to the list of players and then Sort them in numerical order, lowest to highest.

So for example Nadal got the random number 55 and Federer got the random number 103

Remember, there are no seeds so in the list it goes 1 vs 2, 2 vs 3, .... 56 vs 57, etc.... according to the random number assigned to each player

Here is the 'draw' for my random Grand Slam as it came out, the number before each players name is their world ranking, i gave different colours to the 4 quarters of the draw just to make it a bit easier to see:

Feel free to do with it whatever you want... discuss it or ignore it, I just thought it might produce some crazy match-ups in the first couple of rounds.

Would the players that have made it through to the quarters of the Aussie Open still make it there with this draw?

You should have carried it all the way through... assuming the high seed wins each match... then see how the quarter, semi and finals shaped up. Who would be in the finals?

They plan it so the best (and most evenly balanced) matches will be during the final few days of the tournament. It's about generating maximum $$ while providing peak entertainment.

Federer got a tough one with Ferrer 1st round and Djokovic 3rd. I would like this actually, although it wouldn't be as fair.. I just think it would add spice to the first week a bit more. Rationally, it's ridiculous, but irrationally it Could be nice for a change at some lower tournaments, but the Slams shouldn't change because they are great already. I like the concept though.

Who would be in the finals? Nadal of course! As the highest seeded player always wins.. Federer too if he's on the other side (he's got like a 50,5% chance to make finals, 0% to win that way)

Yeah, it's just a hypothetical thing... i'll work through the next couple of rounds tomorrow, not purely on ranking but on my "unbiased" opinion (I think Federer might make a good run! :) )

I didn't manipulate the draw... it was just how it came out randomly!

So... what would happen if say seeds #1 and #2 just happened to play one another in the round of 128?

Theoretically, the quality of tennis and thus the income from the tournament would diminish.

That's why they try and match it up as evenly as possible... so the final few rounds are comprised of the top players... offering the best matches and generating the most income.

The reason/logic behind most things is usually $$.
