What if Fery Makes The Final?

Will Fery be the weakest Wimbledon finalist since MaliVai Washington? Weakest of all time? Weakest slam finalist since whom? Cobolli?
Who has the better chance of staging an upset on Friday, Djokovic over Sinner or Very over Zverev?

Djokovic, by an eyelash!

What if Fery wins the final? Would he be the weakest Wimbledon champion since IDK Goran? Weakest OAT? Weakest major champ since whom? Gaudio? Johansson?

The 4th Rd. Dimitrov 5-setter down 2 sets to 1, 2-4 in the 4th iirc was the first time I watched Fery play. This 23-yr old not only has incredible court sense, tennis IQ, whatever you wish to call it, he also can actually execute these tactically spot on shots & has played a nice variety of styles of opponents leading up to Friday’s semi vs. Sasha.

Throughout the draw, he took down Virtanen in 4, a huge hitting baseliner/server who had just gotten red hot Ben Shelton’s scalp, came back twice from 2 sets to 1 down in the 3rd & 4th rds to win in 5th set TBs against Bergs & Dimitrov, who displayed the best classic grass game of anyone. Now he just straight setted and bageled Cobolli, whose baseline almost clay court style game has been very solid (& Fery took Cob. out at AO as well in straights).

Bottom line, Fery’s relatively efficient straight set win today may allow him to recover a bit. If he is as fit as he seems, I would not be surprised if he twists Zverev into a pretzel with his all court game, counterpunching style, exquisite slices, & overall clutchness tbh.

And if he does find a way to get past Zverev, he will face what’s left of the dude who was up 2 sets to love, 5-1, and melted 2nd rd. of RG OR a 39-year old who hasn’t shown that he can play at a high level for the duration of a match once he’s got 5 matches in him since 2023.

Then, there’s the British crowd who’s currently high from WC fever. Fery seems like he has ice in his veins, totally unconscious out there. Let’s see if it’s a routine Sinner-Zverev final matchup. Wouldn’t bet against that outcome, but at the risk of sounding cliché, that’s why they play the matches.

Why do so many people just throw asterisks around? Why would this merit an asterisk?
I’m not throwing it around so you’d have to ask the asterisk appliers.
But from my knowledge of asterisk slams, this one might qualify.
It will certainly be known as The Fery Open.

How can you guys say that Fery is the weakest WB finalist ever? He just got started, this was his third major ever. He might be the second coming of Sampras or Federer!

Indeed clickbait but what a fairy tale story!
... a fery tale?

A lot of disrespect here for what has been a sensational tournament for Fery. While all his fellow Brits male and female capitulated in either the first or second round he has won through 5 rounds against quality opposition . He may not be good enough yet to get past Zverev but whatever happens he deserves every accolade not snide remarks. All the other Brits crumbled under the “ pressure “( or withdrew on the eve of the tournament ) but Fery has thrived upon it . Having to beat players like Bergs, Dimitrov and Coboli is not a simple pathway and Britain now has a new star.

Fery also beat Cobolli in the first round of the 2026 Australian Open. 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 that time, 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 today in their quarter final at 2026 Wimbledon.

Apparently Cobolli had a stomach bug in Australia.

What happened in today's third set? Did Cobolli give up? I was on a plane that landed a couple of minutes after both matches ended so I wasn't able to watch any of today's action.

Cobolli failed to take several break points in the second game of the third set, and punched himself out seemingly.

Zverev could choke against the hometown kid. I think I see a case of double fault yips.
Zverev just beat his nemesis Fritz in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-2). Fritz had won their previous 7 matches, including at Halle on grass a few weeks ago. We have to go back to 2024 Rome for the last time that Zverev beat Fritz before today.

New Murray incoming.

Nah, Fery has been awesome and has incredible speed and shot placement but he lacks power and has no serve. This will get him some attention though and maybe some more off-court help in terms of better trainers/fitness coaches but I do think this is a flash in the pan run. Very Raducanu-esk.

LOL. Goran a weak champion? He bossed it in 2001. It was also his best serving for nearly 5 years.
Ha knew my insertion of Goran wouldn’t be appreciated? Who’d be a “weaker” SW19 champ then? Always thought Goran had a serve and occasionally solid volleys and zilch else. Sure, his first serve as a 6’7” lefty was possible too 5 ever, esp. in grass…. Groundies and mental game? not so much.

I was mimicking the line of questioning in the OP, far from downplaying Fery’s fortnite. As I stated, I’m impressed with his composure, variety, court sense, slice game, spot serving, etc. Sure, Z’s the heavy fav. after lifting the monkey off his back, but if Z’s serve is off and/or Fery can neutralize it, ya neva know. If Djoko shocks the world again or if Sinner melts again, I’d pick Zverev/Fery winner to win, as Djoko’s 6th 3/5 set predictably and reliably seals his doom, and afro. will be his 6th match. Obv, Sunday would be his 7th, ergo he won’t be able to walk after an 1.5 hours Sunday imho.

I don't know about weakest since his play has been legit good in this tournament but 100% the most unlikely men's slam finalist that I can think of.
This is his 6th year on tour and had zero Masters wins and only two Slam wins prior to this tournament. It doesn't get much more unlikely than this for a slam finalist.

Interesting that Fritz's run began at Wimbledon 2024, continued through a run of matches mostly at tournaments favorable to Fritz, but ended in very one-sided fashion at the very tournament at which it began. (3/7 on grass, 3/7 indoor hard, 1/7 outdoor hard).

Fery is a strong semi-finalist based on his peformance against Cobolli.

But he has extremely limited experience (just practice hits basically) playing against someone who hits the ball as hard and heavy as Zverev, so I think the chances of an upset are low. Albeit he returns amazingly well and takes the ball really early, and that's vital vs Zverev.

Great chance against Djokovic if they somehow meet in the final. But Djokovic's chances against Sinner are probably even worse than Fery's against Zverev after that last 5 setter. Sinner would demolish Fery's serve.

You have to admit, his run was quite impressive...never leaving the "full-attack" mode for entire tournament on the surface that doesn't really reward such an approach. Kudos..

edit: lol, you were too fast to remove the pic.

Yeah I didn't notice it specified Wimbledon finalist so I removed the pic. Verkerk's run was incredible for sure.

He's a man on a mission to "put himself in there". So, he can't have consecutive DFs under pressure in big matches.
I don't mind if he wins it all because he'll have beaten a legit multi-slam winner and Fritz. I like when a consistent guy steps up and finally beats a proven favorite.

" his 6th year on tour" this is just impossible. he played college tennis for at least 3 years

It would truly be a Fery-tale if he won on Sunday, since that's his birthday too! But even if the semis are as far as he goes, it's been good to see an all-courter, flat-hitter progress. His volleys, 2nd-serve returns, movement, court-awareness and 2hbhs are solid.

He would be the shortest Wimbledon champion since Laver. IMO, he looks shorter than 5'9"

Posters have been saying for years that no one that short has a shot at sniffing a major in today's game. No one that short has been in the semis since Grosjean in '04.

Nothing like Raducanu. Raducanu is pretentious, arrogant and lazy. She had a remarkable US Open win and then thought the game owed her everything. She also got caught up in the shallow world of celebrity.

Fery is nothing like that. He’s grounded and hard working. He’ll build on his success rather than look at his bank balance and zone out, like Raducanu has done.

Terrible take. You didn't need groundstrokes to win Wimbledon until 2002. That was the one delight of the tournament.

Also Goran was the second best grass courter for many years. His ranking in 2001 was not reflective of his abilities.
