What if Fery Makes The Final?

... a fery tale?

FYI, he's only the 4th WC to make a major SF (Connors '91 USO, Leconte '92 RG, Goran)

There are generally three types of wildcard:

1) Past top players who have slipped down the rankings because of age, injury, or (occasionally) random loss of form. This type is by far the most likely to make it deep, and all three past WC semi-finalists were of this type.

2) Promising young players of whom much is expected, as with Kouame at RG 2026. This type sometimes has a breakout but it would be asking a lot for them to make the semis.

3) Local players. Some of these are also promising young players, but the bar for necessary promise is lower for locals. This type is probably the least likely to make a deep run, which makes Fery’s run all the more impressive and surprising.

If Arthur makes the final he breaks top40 and will be a springboard for his career. If he wins it, Britain gets a new slam champ and with a bit of luck a public holiday.

This run is already a giant springboard for his career.

If he comes to the net a bunch and serves well I think he can win but it will be tough.

Edge goes to Zverev 65 to 35.

To answer your question, yes he would be a pretty bad major finalist.

Apparently Cobolli had a stomach bug in Australia.

What happened in today's third set? Did Cobolli give up? I was on a plane that landed a couple of minutes after both matches ended so I wasn't able to watch any of today's action.
There is another thread asking if Cobolli is great or simply over achieving, I think that answers your question.

He was overachieving up to that point and then he dropped to his normal level and ran out of gas in the third set would be my guess.

That is almost certainly a bad guess. His “normal level” is not so bad as to explain him losing a set 6-0 against Fery, even though I agree he has been overachieving lately.

Without the CC crowd, he has no chance against Zverev. But with, who knows?

Now, will he win one Wimbledon throughout his career? I say yes!

Will Fery be the weakest Wimbledon finalist since MaliVai Washington? Weakest of all time? Weakest slam finalist since whom? Cobolli?

We must confess that we had never heard of your favourite Arthur Ferry.
Had no idea who he was.
Had never seen Ferry play until he demolished the heavily favoured Baby Fed Dimitrov (who should have retired years ago, but we digress).

Desperate fans in England shout, "All aboard the Ferry!" to support their beloved sensational wild-card Arthur Ferry.

Fery was also an ACADEMIC All American at Stanford, no small feat. I like his game. American college style. Plays fast, with enthusiasm, goes to the net a lot.

Div I College players train over 4 hours a day leaving little room for studies.
What was Arthur Ferry kindly studying at Stanford?
We love intellectuals.

It'd be like Raducanu except instead of the glory of going through qualies, he gets the glory of doing it at Wimbledon. What a story it would be for an ex-college player who seemed to be struggling just to break the top 100.

Honest question. Who is Fery? Literally never heard of him before Wimbledon...

Fery has been 'growing in presence' since 2023 when he came back from Stanford. Went from 700 to 400 to 200 in the World pretty quickly on ITF and Challenger tours. Beat Popyrin in Wimbledon first round last year.

I see Fery beat Tien and Michelsen back to back to win a futures in Malibu in early '23. Brad Gilbert said he saw him that week and that he reminds him of Byron Black.

@ghostofMecir was he on your radar back then?
Right after that he was injured and missed time and then again a little later when he was on another run. He was on many people’s radar, but we all also assumed he’d be limited by height since his ball striking isn’t extraordinary.

I think Fery had only won 3 or 4 matches on the tour before Wimbledon, so he’d definitely be the biggest surprise finalist if he were to pull it off imo.

edit: He had 6 wins overall and 4 this season. Still biggest surprise finalist to me if it happens.

I'd love to see Fery make the final. 99% chance he will get crushed by Zodwart
Is there a player with more nickname variations than Zverev? People commonly start with either "Zed-" or "Zod-" and then attach whatever suffix strikes their fancy. Then we have all the "giraffe"-related stuff.

He's won 19 of 31 matches played in 2026 before Wimbledon.

Ha knew my insertion of Goran wouldn’t be appreciated? Who’d be a “weaker” SW19 champ then? Always thought Goran had a serve and occasionally solid volleys and zilch else. Sure, his first serve as a 6’7” lefty was possible too 5 ever, esp. in grass…. Groundies and mental game? not so much.
Not a single weak Wimb champion comes to mind

His draw has to be the weakest of all time alongside Kyrgios’
Denton and Curren were rough on grass. Curren probably had the goat serving performance of all time(up to that point in tennis history) in the 4R vs Connors(no one had ever hit 30+ aces in 4 sets before)

Dan Haskell called the Lewis-Curren SF one of the best matches in Wimbledon history.

I'd never heard of him either until I watched him beat Mannarino at Queens a few weeks ago. I was impressed with his play in that match, and his level here at Wimbledon has been incredibly high. Weak? I don't think so. Very talented player.

Seems pretty grounded as well.

I just like watching good tennis, so I hope he keeps it up.

then Fery wins wimbledon because he is better than Novak and Sinner right now
Lol. No he isn't.

But the irony is that whoever faces Fery in the final (should he beat Zverev) will have their slam asterisked, but if Fery wins the final it won't be asterisked.

He would be the shortest Wimbledon champion since Laver. IMO, he looks shorter than 5'9"

Posters have been saying for years that no one that short has a shot at sniffing a major in today's game. No one that short has been in the semis since Grosjean in '04.
courts are playing a bit slower in the heat which may help Fery but can’t see his defence standing up to Zverev if the German is confident to transition to the net.

Thanks. Always support up and coming players that play well. I will watch him tonight vs Zverev...

Paul Goldstein, (former Stanford player and current coach there), was on Tennis Channel today talking about Fery, and also a bit about his own time on the pro tour. Haven't found a clip of that discussion yet, but I'm hoping they'll post one. Good stuff!

Till then, here's something a few of you may find interesting.

I honestly have only seen him play the warm ups to Wimbledon along with Wimbledon. I didn’t see him play in Australia, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he plays on the Hard Courts during the U.S. swing as well as the indoor season.

Don't forget ''Street''!

He has a lot of nicknames because, like Voldemort, you don't really want to repeat his name.
