I think its been publicly stated it was very much Federer and manager wanting a Ryder Cup for tennis (and probably seeing the downturn of Davis Cup, Hopman Cup etc...) and putting their money and influence behind it to get the big players, get tv deals, to ensure a level of success - but i think for them the success is more in having a money making exhibition than wanting any level of prestige
