What is Indian Wells up to?

If the US requires all non-citizens to be vaxed for entry, why is the tournament "communicating" with Djokovic?

"We are currently in communication with his team; however, it has not been determined if he will participate in the event by getting CDC approval to enter the country."

Is the CDC issuing waivers now?

Novak Djokovic at centre of United States visa controversy as Indian Wells make statement | Tennis | Sport | Express.co.uk

The same article claims that the website says:

In order to enter the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the 2022 BNP Paribas Open will require all attendees to show valid proof of full vaccination against COVID-19,"

The website says:

In order to enter the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, all visitors must provide valid proof of full vaccination against COVID-19

In order to enter the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the 2022 BNP Paribas Open will require all attendees to show valid proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. To keep all patrons on site as safe as possible, no exceptions to the vaccination policy will be allowed. All tournament volunteers, staff, sponsors, media, and vendors will be fully vaccinated in accordance with this policy.

Tennys Sandgren seems to be playing.

Is he vaxed? If not, the vax requirements for the tournament are not for players?

This wouldn't be the first tournament with different vaccination requirements for players than for fans, FWIW.

US Open and Indian Wells 2021 both had numerous unvaccinated players while requiring proof of vax for fans. So likely that's how Sandgren is playing.

The issue for Novak is getting into the country, not the tournament.

Only problem, where is he now? When does he play?

But this only applies to those arriving by air, not by land or seaport.

Seems like he could easily get in those ways if he really wanted to, no?

Entry to the United States through Land or Ferry Ports of Entry

In separate but related announcements (see below), the controls on travel through land ports of entry on the Canadian and Mexican borders have also been modified. Starting January 22, 2022, all noncitizens who are nonimmigrants will be required to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated with an acceptable COVID-19 vaccine under the same vaccine standards as air travelers. Unlike air travel, though, there is not a COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers entering through land or ferry ports of entry.

Oh goodness lol.

Anyway that is contrary to what is on the CDC website if you look at the FAQs. I guess perhaps they are wrong, though it says updated as of March 3.

I think they are just not making assumptions. It's entirely possible Djokovic could get vaxxed and come. They are respecting that he might not have withdrawn because of this. It makes good business and political sense for the organisation.

One thing Djokovic could do is to obtain a fake identity as a Ukrainian refugee and try to get in on humanitarian grounds and then suddenly show up with his tennis bags at Indian Wells.

That is what I posted yesterday, but today their invocation of CDC makes no sense.

Indian Wells has taken huge sums of money from Larry Ellison, who has held fund-raisers for a certain political personality who is supported by a lot of science deniers. There may be some hidden connection here.

It is always a problem when sports or educational institutions accept money from individuals or their corporations, and the true character of the donor becomes clearer later.

Maybe Novak is on a boat to USA?

IW hands are tied per ATP rules. They cannot remove a qualified player from the draw without his written withdraw. Made sense for mandatory tournaments before COVID travel restrictions, but that rule no longer makes sense.

Shame on the ATP for not using common sense and updating an antiquated rule written when the world was different.

gosh is he going to ruin the miami draw too??
hes probly like might as well lol
How's Novak ruining draw? Is he obligated to inform anyone of such things? If not, what's the problem?
And someone could say it's his moral obligation, but ATP ITF don't gives a f for him, why he should give a f?

This, I wrote similar, ATP do not do their job, as always...

What should ATP/ITF do for him? Encourage his illegal entry tactics?

some ppl do things only out of obligation :(
others do things out of courtesy for others (like self isolate if they have covid!)

You could repeat as parrot, but Novak was legally in Australia, had all papers needed, he had invitation, court decided all is legal, ordered to be released, and was expelled by one political decision that has nothing with law (third world country style... Politic against law and judge, lol)...

Well, some people deserve courtesy and some don't... Novak never did such things, he always declared absence in time... I guess he saw someone don't deserve courtesy anymore...

The final decision was approved unanimously by a 3-judge panel which praised the Foreign Minister and his policies, so you need to stop watching fake news.

Djokovic was legally deported. Minister had power to legally do that.

Interesting that we may have a thread like this one for every ATP tournament being played in the USA in 2022.

Eh, all he has to do is fly into Mexico, walk across the border into California, go up to a border patrol agent and tell him that he is seeking asylum then ask them to provide him a free ride to Indian Wells then he's in. No vaccine, no negative Covid test, no problem. Stay as long as you want. 200,000 other people do this per month so why not Novak?

How much would the transfer service from Mexico border to IW cost?

Djoko was lawfully deported from Australia because he wasn't vaccinated and didn't meet the requirements for entry to the country.
Tennis Australia wrongly informed unvaccinated players they could enter the country if they had caught Covid within the last six months and wrongly gave them a medical exemption from vaccination.

The organisers look very stupid right now lol. He is playing according to the draw but not according to the “miss you” wall in their grounds.

You couldn’t make it up.

Absolute utter BS. You clearly haven't seen the court cases or read any of the court submissions. Never at any point has any of the Australian judges declared that his papers were in order. Matter of fact, counsil for ND has admitted that it was not the case. The only ruling ever made were 1: ND was not given enough time to give additional evidence and as such his original rejection was overturned (and no where in that ruling was there any other statement of fact or law on the legality of any of his submissions) and 2: The minister did his due diligence before he revoked ND's visa and there was nothing else for the judge to do.
