What is Talent?

This is a question that goes many ways. What is talent really? Is it already knowing how to play? Is it knowing what to do at the right time? If you think you know what talent really means, share it with us.... I will voice my opinion a little bit later on! :D

That is the best answer. Talent can only predict the outer limits of what an athlete can possibly do.

The other factors such as drive and mental toughness determine how far the athlete takes their talent.....or does not take their talent.

We all know many cases where less talented athletes are able to go further than more talented athletes when they have a lot more drive and mental toughness.

talent is having natural abilities, that other people have to pick up the hard way.
Talent is something that makes you stand out, and if you combine talent and hardwork you'll be sky high over those who have all of the talent in the world but have no drive to get any better.
You may find your talent in mental toughness, like being able to focus, or you may find it in your strokes, volleys, or serves.
You have to explore areas to find what you are talented at and what you need to work harder at.
For practice YOU SHOULD ALLWAYS practice the shots you don't usually hit,
because trying to get something you never had, means doing things you have never done.
So this is my advice take it or leave it.
I would advise you to take it. =]

Talent = Potential

The biblical view of talent is something that is given by God and multiplied by hard work.

Talent in tennis is probably the sum of gifts a person has in performing in the game. I would expect one's mental abilities, reflexes, hand-eye coordination, mind-arm-and coordination, tactical knowledge, intuition, etc... all to be subtalents contributing to the greater whole.

So its a bunch of small skills and devices a person has in order to allow the person an effective game for tennis.

And this culmination working in harmony allows the beauty of tennis to be danced or played.

i think talent can be divided into different categories, such as physical, mental, etc.
Having a good body shape for tennis or having good 'hands' are examples of physical talent. Competitiveness and long concentration are examples of 'mental talent'.
well thats what i believe anyway

Talent is the ability to pick up skills and abilities with comparatively less effort than someone with lesser talent. We've all seen differences in talents of beginning players. You can demonstrate and explain hitting a shot to a kid and pow, he's cracking nice shots with little extra instruction. You give the same instructions to another kid and you wonder if he even speaks the language.

Then you have general athletic coordination. If you toss a ball at someone and instead of catching it, it pops them in the forehead, you know you're going to have to spend extra time with them.

Excellent post. Your last paragraph is classic. When we start with a group of kids, tossing them a very soft ball and seeing what happens tells a lot. The reactions can range from graceful catches, ducking, to the "pop on the forehead"!

I think talent is the ability to easily pick up a skill. For instance, drastically improving after just a few lessons.

I agree, but may be its not just "i got lucky that i was born like this and ended up becoming good at tennis in a few lessons" But may be it depends on the persons state of mind.

it means a lot of hard work and dedication.

No offense, but I don't think that hard work and dedication fits into the "talent" category. Those who work hard can overcome the barrier of being "not talented", but those who are talented in the beginning can surpass hard-workers easily if they work just as hard. Talent means natural aptitude or skill, so if you gained your skill through hard work, would that still be "natural"?

Also, I've found that talented players don't have to work as hard as people that are untalented (like myself). I have a friend who is "talented"... I work a lot harder than he does (we have the same coach, the coach admits it), but he can still beat me 6-2 any day.

Hello? If you don't usually hit the shot, aren't you better off hitting a more secure shot (to you)? If you're not going to use it much, you're better off working on shots that you are good at (and use).

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I thought of something today that would be a good description of talent: Being able to make something look so easy to do. What do you guys think?

Talent is the ability to learn fast... both mentally and physically. It's the natural limiter of one’s abilities, that can’t be upgraded with practice.

Talent is God given and has to be honed. But talent to me is one part of many pieces that make a champion. My daughter (who just started playing junior tournaments) watched the recenly concluded Dela Hoya vs. Pacquio boxing match with me last saturday. I told her that both fighters were equally "talented", but hard work, perserverence, and having the "heart of a champion" is what usually gets one over the other.

Great thread by the way...

Thanks and I totally agree. Talent is nothing if the person chooses not to use it. It's just a waste...
