wait, is that really his official draw? that's terrible.

No, the purpose of this thread is to come up with the toughest possible draw for whoever you pick to win the USO. There are often "fixed draw" arguments AFTER the draw comes out, so I wanted people to chime in about what would be the most difficult draw for the eventual winner before the draw is released. That would allow us to more objectively determine who has the most difficult draw once the draw is out.

For Federer it would be:

1st: Sela
2nd: Isner
3rd: (32)Hewitt
Rof16: (23) Querrey or (20) Wawrinka
QF: (7) Tsonga
SF: (4) Djokovic
F: (2) Murray

For Nadal, the nightmare would be
1st: Gulbis
2nd: IDK Santoro? :lol:
3rd: Blake
Rof16: Soderling
QF: Tsonga
SF: Federer
F: Murray

I don't see chardy, isner, youzhny, querrey, or verdasco being any threat to Fed at the USO.

and no nadal... lol?

There generally aren't any possible 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round opponents that can trouble Federer. And I think Djokovic is a bigger threat to Federer at the USO than Nadal, who still doesn't seem to have found his best form.

Andy Roddick

R128 - Isner
R64 - Gulbus
R32 - Querry
R16 - Hewitt
QFs - Federer
SFs - Nadal
F - Murray

dont think you can get a harder draw than that.. and its actually possible.

You should replace Gulbis with Youzhny, THAT would be a nightmare for him:twisted:

thanks for the clarification.

Uhh lets see for Federer

1r Isner
2r Gulbis
3r Hewitt
4r Nalbandian/Cilic
QF Tsonga
SF Nadal
F Murray

For Nadal
1r Isner
2r Youzhny
3r Ferrer
4r Soldering
QF Del Potro
SF Murray
F Djokovic

thats all I have for the moment

oh for Djokovic

1r Gasquet
2r Isner
3r Kohlschriber
4r Haas
QF Roddick
SF Federer
F Murray

Andy Roddick

R128 - Isner
R64 - Gulbus
R32 - Querry
R16 - Hewitt
QFs - Federer
SFs - Nadal
F - Murray

Yes, that would suck. Hopefully Roddick gets a break and gets stuck with Djokovic in his quarter and then maybe Murray or Fed gets upset so he doesn't have to face either in the semis.

Federer:

R128 - Gulbis, on fire
R64 - maybe Isner
R32 - Karlovic/Haas/Berdych.. all similar level threats to Roger
R16 - maybe Stepanek... he's already beaten Fed and likes fast surfaces... or Monfils...
QF - Tsonga, playing well and having built momentum winning his first 4 matches
SF Djokovic - too bad I can't put Murray here
F Nadal - I think Fed would be a lot more prone to choking vs Rafa in the final than in the semifinal

For Federer it would be:

1st: Sela
2nd: Isner
3rd: (32)Hewitt
Rof16: (23) Querrey or (20) Wawrinka
QF: (7) Tsonga
SF: (4) Djokovic
F: (2) Murray

1st: Gulbis
2nd: IDK Santoro? :lol:
3rd: Blake
Rof16: Soderling
QF: Tsonga

That joker Tsonga would be a dream QF opponent for Rafa, tougher would be Del Potro or Roddick.

dont think roddick can beat murray? i think it would be a close match that either could win.

Isn't it funny how everyone (myself included) has Gulbis in their toughest possible draws and he's still only 13-20 this season, yet to win 2 straight matches, and about to fall out of the top 100 after the USO? :lol:

We at TT have definetly overhyped him to this point.

He's a clown. God knows why he has so many fans on here. Here's neither talented or interesting.

Gulbus is so overrated -- Roddick handled him last yr at the US Open playing MUCH worse than he is now. The true nightmare draw for Roddick:

R128 = Isner
R64 = Safin
R32 = Hewitt
R16 = Verdasco
QF = Federer
SF = Delpo
F = Murray

On the other hand, the dream draw for Roddick:
R128 = Odesnik
R64 = Melzer
R32 = Blake
R16 = Robredo or Monfis
QF = Djoker
SF = Murray
F = Nadal (after Nadal beats Fed in SF)

Toughest for Fed:

R128 = Ancic
R64 = Isner
R32 = Andreev (only player close to beating Fed last yr in US Open)
R16 = Simon (only b/c of H2H)
QF = Roddick
SF = Nadal
F = Murray

Toughest Draw:

1. Federer

2. Nadal

3. Murray

4. Djokovic

5. Roddick

6. Gicquel

7. Safina

For Federer, this would be a nightmare draw:

R1: Isner (Isner took a set against Federer in USO2007)
R2: Andreev (really should have beaten Federer at USO 2008)
R3: Karlovic
R4: Simon
QF: Roddick
SF: Nadal
F: Murray

He has a losing record against 3 players if he gets this draw (Murray, Simon and Nadal), and Karlovic/Isner are dangerous players for anyone.

Throw in Thomas Berdych as well as a very dangerous opponent should he meet Roger, he's a dangerous player whenever he's against Roger.

It all depends. If it's Federer, than probably Rafa and Murray. For Nadal, it's Djokovic and DelPotro. For Djokovic, Roddick, Murray and Federer. For Murray, DelPotro, Federer and Djokovic.

Do you guys think that Nadal would be a lesser opponent than Djokovic? I can understand how Djokovic has shown better form lately, but his game plays right into Federer's strengths, whereas Nadal's plays right into his weaknesses. Nadal's been struggling a little bit, but I can see a 90% Nadal still giving Federer more problems than a 100% Djokovic.

karlovic has no chance against fed, he always reads his serve. you mean USO 2008? not 2008)

I believe that Djokovic at his best is a bigger threat on HC's than Nadal at his best, even for Federer. And right now, Nadal is nowhere close to his best.

Nada vs:

Gulbis 2-0
santoro 1-0
Blake 2-3
Söderling 3-1
tsonga 3-1
Federer 13-7
Murray 7-2

Instead of Santoro...i'd put Ferrer.

Söderling? Pleaseeeeeeeee unless Nadal is injured again.

Federer would rather play Djokovic in any slam than Nadal. End of story. It doesnt matter that Djokovic is probably the better hard court player, and is definitely in better form now. There is no way Federer would rather see Nadal in his draw than Djokovic.

Nadal and Ferrer couldn't meet until the 3rd or 4th round, so that wouldn't work in place of Santoro...

Sure he has good records against all those guys (save for Blake), but all of the guys listed from Blake on have beaten Nadal in a slam. And having beaten a guy previously in a slam is a huge deal, IMO.

And Soderling did take Nadal to 5 at Wimby 2006, so it's not like the French performance was a HUGE fluke, an upset yes, but he's the type of player Nadal dreads playing. Same w/ Blake and Tsonga.

Also LOL at people picking Tsonga as the toughest quarterfinal opponent for Federer. His come from behind win in Canada was a huge fluke. Tsonga would never beat Federer in a slam in a million years. There really is no tough slam quarterfinal opponent for a confident Federer, which he seems to be now, but if one must be picked Roddick or Del Potro are both bigger threats to Roger in a slam quarterfinal than Tsonga ever would be. If somehow Federer and Tsonga meet at the U. S Open then Federer will finish him off in 2 and a half hours or less. Mark my words.

Ok, well that's all that matters to me. I don't think Federer has a mental block against Nadal anymore, so he'll probably come out playing the same way whether it's Nadal or Djokovic. And Nadal's game is not as troublesome to deal with on this surface. I can't say that I know what Federer wants, but I find Djokovic to be a bigger threat than Nadal at the USO.

The bolded part is what I doubt. That is why Nadal is IMO on any surface, in any form, a tougher draw for him than Djokovic. I dont see Djokovic beating a confident Federer in a slam, especialy not right now while he himself isnt fully confident. If he couldnt even make more than a mild impact in a best 2 of 3 set match vs Federer in his current form (their spring matches were not Federer in his current form) then I certainly dont see him doing much in a best 3 of 5 where his chances are considerably less. Djokovic all but admited to his lack of confidence vs the big guns now in his post match comments, and if his rout of Nadal in the semis didnt cure that then he has some serious mental issues to work through now. In Australia 2008 Djokovic was playing the tennis of his life so far, and Federer was on the start of a bit of a downswing. I could see Nadal possibly upsetting Federer even now just by his sheer presence alone and Federer beating himself since it is Nadal on the other side. There is absolutely no way Nadal should even get a set off Federer on the U.S Open surface in the form both are in now, in fact it should be a rout. However that is where the freaky issues of the matchup and Federer's mind playing Nadal come into play.

Well do you really think Roddick can take out Fed? After all these years? Another shot at Wimbledon and he STILL couldn't get it done? The h2h's still 19-2 in Fed's favor, w/ 0 wins for Roddick in slam matches. I just can't say he's a tougher match for Fed, seeing as how he's Fed's duck.

And JMDP? Sure he's improved and a definite threat, but do you remember what happened at the Aussie? I won't remind you if you don't. I don't think he has the fitness and consistency necessary to take out Fed at a slam, sure he came close at the French, but Fed on clay and Fed on HC is two totally different beasts.

Who's left after that? Davydenko? Fed's duck. Verdasco? Too weak mentally. Simon? 2-0 h2h, but you honestly think he could do that at a slam? :lol:

So that's why I chose Tsonga, though I'm sure everyone realizes the only players with a legit shot of dethroning Roger are Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray. I just can't buy into Roddick.

For Roddick

1. don't matter
2. idk
3. ugg
4. some guy

skip a few...

and in the final federer! Roddick's gotta love playing him by now:twisted:

Roddick was so incredibly close to beating Federer at Wimbledon. That was a mega scary match for Federer, he definitely could have lost it. That alone puts him above Tsonga for me.

Del Potro's best surface is hard courts also. He wont be massively more worried about playing Federer on hard courts than clay. Australia means nothing IMO, Del Potro is a much different player than he was then.
