What is your opinion about aging?

In general, what is your opinion about it? Whether you are still young or old, how do you view it?
If you are older now, how did you view it when you were young? Were you looking forward to it or dreading it? And how do you look at it now?

For me personally I view it as something absolutely horrible.

As we age we start getting uglier and uglier, our face starts to get more and more wrinkles, hair starts to gray out, face starts to widen, looking at some young pictures from some old people now like grandpa or grandma or some others, its absolutely depressing.. when you look at them now you just see their old wrinkled face, so you don't think much of them as far as looks go, but then you look at their younger pics and they look stunning and sexy, and you can't believe how this is the same person.

The skin on your body once smooth and tight and shiny, is now old, wrinkled full of old spots, loose and saggy...

The youtheful face, eyes, mouth are now very worn out and far from that youthful appereance, looking like they have been through alot.

You start to get more health problems creeping up, higher blood pressure, prostate problems, other issues coming up here and there..

Physically you are slower and slower by the year, weaker and weaker, less able to do things, get tired more quickly...

So thinking about it, it just seems absolutely horrible and nightmarish to even think about.

So how do you guys view it?

For the younger people in their teens, 20s and 30s, are you looking forward to it? Are you dreading it and thinking why it has to eventually happen? And why can't you stay like this forever?

For the middle aged people around 45+ how are you viewing it? How has it been so far, are you fine with it or would you rather want to have your more youthful looks and physical ability?

For the more older people 65+ whats your take on it? have you fully accepted it? Are you fine with it? When you see some 18 year old with beautiful toned and tight skin and youtheful smooth face, are you kind of jealous in a sense, that they are still so young and youthful an full of energy while you are not?

Would really be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Please state your AGE when you post and describe your view and personal feelings regarding this, im really interested.

I personally don't recommend aging. I said many times before, if you believe in Gaia (mother nature) just look in a mirror as you age. You
will quickly realize Mother Nature does not love you. Second, the lyrics to the Happy Birthday song should be changed to: "Another year
older and closer to dead". What's Happy about that realization?

The worse is the hot, young, shapely, chicks don't check you out any more and if you check them out too closely, you be called a dirty Old
Man. Plus may have to register as a sex predator.

40+

Feel better now then I ever did in my 20's and even 30's. I turned into a physical slob after college, and did nothing to stay healthy. I had no money, had to work my butt off, had no time to do anything, moved around a bunch to different cities, travels constantly. Now, I am more grounded, I work out regularly, I play tennis 3 times a week, sometimes more, and I eat much healthier. I feel terrific.

It gets harder each year to stay in shape and fit. Injuries seems to stick with me longer, stretching is more difficult. Finding the time with other full time commitments is the worst part. Having one beer or taco can set me back days its seems. However, I enjoy the challenge and game of staying fit.

Looking forward I worry about continuing to feel good, maintaining a healthy weight, keeping myself fresh. It's a challenge, but I see it more as a game and not something to be defeated by. Lots of things men can do out there to look great. And I see guys in their 70's and 80's still running around playing tennis and looking healthy, they are my inspiration.

So, age is a mindset to me

Yes that is one of the worst things I can imagine about this whole thing! You find young girls sexy still but if you look at them people look at you weird, like ur a pedophile lol.

One of the most fascinating psychological aspects of aging to me is how older women look better to you as you get older. When you're in your 20s you generally can't conceive of being attracted to a 60 year old. You reach 60 and many of those women look pretty damn good to you. I still think my wife is really sexy and that hasn't changed over a few decades. Yeah, 20 year old girls can look great, but I don't think it's as big an issue as you imagine it to be with older women.

I'm assuming the OP is relatively young. Late teens, early twenties.... Is that correct?

I'm mid 40s, and i can say that the first 21 years of your life seen to take so long.... Whereas the next 21 disappear in a blink!

It's funny that you figured mainly in the physical features of an aging person. As you get older, you'll find that people even out with age. In high school, their "undateable" boys/girls that to may have thought were ugly or hideous. With age, those people tend to get better looking. Meanwhile, some of the hotties take a major turn for the worse. It's pretty interesting, actually.

As far as the rest of aging goes, it's not that drastic. Can i grab the rim of basketball hoop anymore? Nope..... Not a big deal, though. Injuries crept in during my 30s. But, also, Parenthood played a big part ( and still does). With children, you care less about yourself and focus more on them. That's one thing about sing and maturing is that you become far less egocentric.

The biggest truth though is that "youth is wasted on the young!". You really understand it when you are no longer young. Such is life. Enjoy the journey and live for today. You can't fight the inevitable. Your only option would to die young and that's not worth it.

Older you get, the worse you are physically speaking unless you take care of yourself when you were younger, then it is not that bad in later years like in your late 40s, 50s, 60s!

Very interesting question. I’m 45 and I’ll be 46 in August. Being an athlete almost my entire life, I have CERTAINLY get the affects of getting older. I’m sore after games/matches almost always. Using an ice pack for my shoulder and knees has become standard practice now.

Now with all that being said, I stil believe a body in motion stays in motion. I refuse to subscribe that to can’t do anything because I’m aging. I like the knowledge and experienced I’ve gained, but the need for Advil, Ice Packs, etc you can keep that ****!!!o_O

Aging should be outlawed, made illegal! :p

I guess for me and my situation, I like aging. My circumstances are much different from typical people though. At a young age I developed a severe painful IBD condition. My younger years were not all that great. Now that I'm older and healthier, being older is nice and less painful. As I've been know to joke, I'm sort of like that character in the book/short story, The curious case of Benjamin Buttler.

Most people I know my age don't care for growing older. They understandably fight it. Some are successful and others less so, it seems to me.

You become wiser though. Less ego driven for sure.53 and still fit.

I do weigh myself around 6 times a day though.

At 68 I'm luckier than most as my speed (such as it is) and hand eye coordination are still much better than average, even against the youngsters. My health is good and weight has stayed almost the same as my high school days. People who don't know me actually argue with me that I can't possibly be "that old". I can't complain, but I still do, as I don't have the stamina or drive to play all day like I used to. It went from all day to all afternoon to now all of 3 hours and then I'm toast for the remainder of the day. Still play singles but running out of partners as no one wants to run. Strength has diminished to where I can only do a handful of pull ups and doubt if I could lift 100 lbs over my head. Stopped playing basketball at 62 when I couldn't really jump any more. Vision is another factor that takes away reflexes and timing as I don't see the tennis/pickle/ping pong ball as clearly as I used to.

I was lucky that smoking and drugs never interested me even as a drummer in a rock band in an era where peer pressure was constant. When I start whining and feeling sorry for myself because I'm too tired, or can't do this or that anymore, or as well as I used to, I have to stop myself and remember that sadly many of my childhood friends are already gone.

I recently read a sentence that has stuck with me lately: Aging is a privilege denied to many.

I feel great at 50. No meaningful health issues. In the vast majority of respects I expect my 50s to be better than my 40s which were better than my 30s. At 60... I expect to feel somewhat differently (and not in a good way). At 70, I expect to feel quite differently. That's assuming I even make it that far. I'm pretty sure I'll experiment with some anti-aging concoctions at some point (under a doctor's supervision, of course) but that's still several years off. For now, however - knock on wood - no issues.

We are all going to die and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

The biggest thing I've learnt as I've aged is I rarely if ever get stressed out.

I realise now that getting angry etc is a very fast track to death.

I have witnessed first hand how emotional stress can decay the human body in a matter of weeks!

A marriage breakup and another person who thought he'd lose his business after being issued with legal action - his hair immediately turning grey! It grew back and the colour returned when legal action was dropped.

When I do encounter stressful situations - I try to take the mature response - and laugh it off.

I'm done playing with old guys who claim they are 5.0+. Yes you can still smack the ball if I hit it directly into your ideal swing path, but that's about it.

Look like all of you are having mode life crisis! Don’t worry I’m 40 and I need to sleep with a lot of women and don’t tell my wife about it!

My mother told me today that my younger sister's doctor told her that she has six months to live. So I need to go have a chat with her. I don't believe that she only has six months to live but she's down to 98 pounds at 5' 6". The crappy thing about getting older is that your odds of genetic mutations goes up exponentially which means that you can get sick in all kinds of different ways. BTW, my mother is 95 or 96 and was expected to die in the hospitals about four years ago. The doctors stabilized her with the right combination of medications. She has some joint problems with limit her mobility but she is still living independently.

TISM covered the issue in two songs

Calamari die after about 12 months
Mayflies live for only 24 hours (LOL)
Humans live for about 70 years
Dogs live about 10
Greenland sharks live 500 or 600 years
Immortal Jellyfish live forever

Death is programmed into us. Environment maximizes/minimizes what we are given.

It is what it is. Direct all complaints to the manufacturer. I've tried, but they never return my emails or answer my calls, it's as if no one is in the office LOL!

This is actually true. Cortisol is a death hormone.

Holy Cow. I had no idea Greenland sharks live for 500 years.

The only good thing about being older is a far more stable and settled life. You've figured out money and your career, and hopefully love. Now you get to enjoy hobbies like tennis. I've never trained as intensely as i am now.

LOL. Nobody likes it but "horrible"? Why are you obsessed about a few wrinkles and grey hair? Sounds so vapid and shallow.

Maybe it is shallow dunno.

Its not about wrinkles and grey hair, its more about not belonging to the young generation anymore..

Once ur at a certain age, young people view you as old and not part of them, and you are viewed weird if you look at younger females, and the young people feel uncomfortable talking to you about some things such as sexual conversations and so and feel like thats creepy since ur old etc..

wrinkles mess with the aerodynamics of my technique.
grey hair is stiff, and whistles through the air differently as a move with lightning speed, therefore messing with the acoustics of my shots.

what's scarier, about getting old, IMO, is running out of time, and not accomplishing the things i want to accomplish

Well, I definitely don't want to belong to the young generation (Millenials), looking at my phone screen for 6 hours/day, so no problem here... :-)
but if i were, i'd have 20 extra years to figure out how to not do that...

big increase in the suicide rate of millenials reported recently, maybe the result of hearing dire forecasts all the time (first generation in American history that will likely have a lower standard of living than preceding generation, possibly a shorter life expectancy as well)

Might be the problems with being not being connected to other people (in person) and support structures in general. I do see lots of millennials doing quite well: socially, financially, etc. But the places that I frequent aren't representative.

One of the online places where I hang out is FinTwits (Financial Twitter folks). When someone has a son, daughter, niece, nephew, etc., they sometimes just tweet to their followers asking for internships and coops for them and they get responses. Could the average person do that?

Why would that be? The recession in 2001 (a generation ago) was really bad. Today's employment numbers are some of the best ever.
This young generation seem to have it relatively good compared to the previous one.

If were were immortal, the planet would be overflowing with deathless humans in a geological blink of the eye, we would exhaust all resources, and the species would die. Also if we were immortal, we would not be able to evolve or adapt to our environment as it changed across the millenia, either individually (duh) or through natural selection, we would not be plastic, and so eventually/inevitably the species would become extinct.

We are just survival machines for our genes. We age because as far as Mother Nature is concerned, we have (or should have by now) fulfilled our one job, to reproduce, have had time enough to raise our progeny, and thus there is no further point to our continued existence. So we begin to fall apart. LOL just like a bell curve, reproduction is the mean.

So does ageing suck? Of course it does. It is basically dying whilst still alive.

You worry about this, and other, chit too much though, and life passes you by. You just **** years away. Just play tennis.

What do you tell a hard-working millennial patient that is despondent over a lower standard of living? He just has to learn to accept these things?

I think the shark is just smiling.

Hard to believe that sharks can remain cancer-free for 500 years, especially given all the pollutants in the ocean.

Scientists have known for more than 150 years that sharks get cancer. And yet the belief persists that the animals don't suffer from the disease.

That misconception is promoted in part by those who sell shark cartilage, who claim that the substance will help cure cancer, said David Shiffman, a shark researcher and doctoral student at the University of Miami. But no studies have shown that shark cartilage is an effective treatment.

It's unknown what caused the tumors in the great white or bronzer shark. However, reports of cancerous tumors in marine animals, especially mammals, have steadily increased over the past 20 years, raising concerns that industrial pollutants or human activities may trigger the cancers, according to the study. Beluga whales have been recorded to suffer from cancer, and in areas near aluminum smelting plants, cancer is the second leading killer of the whales, the study noted.

It's cyclical. Booms & busts come and go. In the meantime, sock whatever you can away.
