What is your opinion of ear cupping in tennis?

Taking in the applause … I do agree that some situations are over the top but sometimes you can’t begrudge an athlete the spoils. If the score is 1-0 and 15-0 then I get that might be to much as there’s so far to go, but if you’re in a tight 4 or 5 setter, what a rush it must be to tip the scales in your favour with a moment of brilliance … with the crowd roaring and appreciating every moment may well warrant an ear cup.

Yes the same thing.

No need for silence. No need for always sitting down during the games. The first match I attended live , my friend was managing the event and when I spotted him, I stood up and he said sit down , that is the rules of this game.

It depends on the player and the context, but at its most benign it feels like a music artist asking the crowd to “make some noise” before launching into the next tune. Just a way to build the energy of the audience and their immersion in the experience.

But it can also sometimes come off as “oh yeah, I’m amazing, cheer for me,” which is a little off-putting.
 
There is such a huge disconnect between tennis comments at TTW and real life fans. If you go watch matches live (which I know many if not most of you have done) you’d know that stadium fans love all these antics. Yet here so many comment like grumpy old men yelling at the clouds

Disagree. A lot of the things complained about or raved about here parallels what I hear from regular fans.

A lot of these ear-gesture points are great points that the crowd is already cheering for. The gesture is just an extra, unnecessary addition.
 
I don't really think about it too much but yeah these celebrations seem to be a bigger thing nowdays.

I’ve been to many real matches. I’m sure you have too. Every single time something like this happens the whole stadium applauds. I’ve yet to see any fan push back.

This is part of a much broader “sports as entertainment “ movement that has led to all kinds of efforts by organizers to keep fans engaged

It's true we moan a bit too much but go with the flow we aren't stuffing millions of dollars playing in front of millions of people :whistle:
 
Beat shirt ripping and animosity. But I think fist pump "com'ons" for every point are worse. Ear cupping happens sporadically on intense points at least, and most crowds respond in kind.

Like I said, they typically do the ear gesture after a great point or shot. The crowd is already cheering.

The ear flap thing does nothing really. It's just a phase and will go away eventually Im sure.

I honestly don't care. It's fine. Players can celebrate as they wish (ear cupping, fist pumping, screaming, tearing off shirts, and on and on), no matter how obnoxious or mundane or anywhere in between. And obviously "obnoxious" is in the eye of the beholder. I like the variety in personalities and behavior.

It may go away. Nothing lasts forever after all. But in all instances where I’ve seen the ear cupping the crowd raises its level when the player does it. Sure, they would have cheered without it. But it helps raise the excitement.

Wait until we get cheerleaders dancing in the court between sets!
 
I wouldn't exactly say I'm a fan, but usually it doesn't annoy me that much. It's just players trying to rev themselves up and get the crowd on their side

Yeah, I think it will go away. I remember back in the early 2000s it used to annoy the hell out of people when Lleyton Hewitt did the "Come on" very loudly on every other point, and then other players did it but that's kind of faded now.
 
Earring is the smartest thing I've ever seen, because it saves energy (compared to fisting).
I didn't like it at first, because its like you are asking for applause, but its A LOT easier and more economical than fisting.

It makes me want to root against whoever does it, lol. Easily the cringiest celebration (after the boob throw) that a player can do. If I want to cheer for you I’ll do it without you telling me Keith :rolleyes:
