What it would be like without Federer and Nadal...

What would we do? Who would we look up to on the ATP circuit. In my honest opinion, without the two, there wouldn't be a consistant champion right now on the circuit. Who could possibly take their position?

- Safin is always injured.
- Roddick is on a mental loop.
- Nalbandian is a solid player but he doesnt pull though all the time.
- Ljubicic is just hitting his prime, which is late in his career and will soon fall off as quickly.
- Blake is doing well, but can he beat the majority of players consistantly?
- Hewitt has to adjust to his current lifestyle.
- TW wouldnt have all of the Federer Bashing and Nadal Bashing threads (which is healthy for the sport in my opinion)

These two men are currently living up to their expectations and representing the sport well. I think without them, tennis wouldnt be at the level it is today, which was left by the sampras-agassi era. Any other opinions?

Hewitt would have MANY more Grand Slam titles to his name, if you look at how many times he has run into Federer. He would have had the 2004 US Open, the 2005 Wimbledon, and possibly 2004 Australian Open, the 2004 Wimbledon, and 2005 US Open.

True, and he did lose to nadal at the FO this year. So how come he is not #3 right now if that were the case? He has been knocked out of some first rounds this year and last. He couldnt even compete at the Tennis Masters Cup because of other "obligations." So yes, possibly more grand slams, but he wouldnt be the dominating force in the game.

It's impossible to know if the sequence of events would be similar particularly without Federer in the mix. We don't know if Hewitt and Roddick would have been in the same positions they are now if Federer wasn't around. And last year he lost in ONE first round because he had to retire from the match thanks to a stomach virus in Toronto, every other tourney he played he got to the quarters (once) semis (4?) finals (3) and was the champion in Sydney.
