What kind of retirement are folks expecting for Nadal?

I expect him to die on court, just like the bull he is, the deserved rest for the champion of champions, family life? A bull? No, if he is out of duty he might even eat his children, he must be put down once the show is over

Either nothing at all, or a ceremony in Spain.

As much as people identify him with RG, I don't get the sense that there is a ton of warmth between him and the tournament itself...unlike Fed at Wimbledon or Pete/Andre at the US. He's a homebody.

"And in sports news today, Rafael Nadal told reporters in his press conference after winning the French Open, that today will be his last day playing tennis, deciding to retire from the sport. Our very own John McEnroe was there to wish him a fond farewell as he hobbl...walked out of the conference room."

+1 on 24 Olympics. Even if he was in a Fed spot situation seems he could prepare himself for 20 months at least.

I reckon it’ll just be organic. Either he’ll win big and then retire or injury will force him. He’ll announce it right away. Then he’ll have a goodbye ceremony at the Barcelona tournament.

I think Rafa will go silently, he is not a man to have ceremonies and pamper his own ego by having players celebrating his retirement with him, that kind of things he won't do.

If there is a ceremony organized by ATP to honor him then he will be a part of it or else he will silently announce that it is his last match. Whatever that venue is.
What sort of time frame did you have in mind?

It will not be big. He will probably make the announcement after a tournamnent, whether he wins or loses. Either after RG, Wimbledon or Olympics in 2024.

I just don't see Nadal going big for his retirement. It'll probably be a small announcement, with no official celebration like the one we got for Rog.

The Laver Cup, 2024, Berlin: reigning Olympic and French Open champion Rafael Nadal is scheduled to play 3 retirement doubles matches, one with record-holding 27-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic, another with 1-time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, and one with Roger Federer, a former tennis player. He gets injured beforehand and doesn't play a match (his final match therefore being a 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 defeat to Taylor Fritz at the US Open), but there is a nice ceremony. Sam Smith sings some songs while Nadal and Federer hold hands. Nadal announces the inception of his golf career the following day. He goes on to win multiple majors.

I think in 2025.

Nadal should retire at 2024 Olympics but he won't, he normally likes the Slams more than anything else, so he will maybe aim for Roland Garros 2025 maybe because until 2024 he cannot retire even if he is mummified, so he will go till 2025.

Novak isn't retiring until 2026 so my guess is if Rafa is behind Novak in slams by 2024 then he will announce retirement in next few months, otherwise he will try to play till 40+
Well.

Bit long for my taste, but does leave a nice little stretch to pick up some L's.

Will be surprised to see it happen, myself! :censored:

Rafa is loved at Roland Garros. I'm aware that Rafa bashers have tried to convince readers/listeners of the opposite, but they haven't succeeded.

There you go again, making everything as negative as possible so you can respond in kind

I said I didn't think there was a ton of warmth--and that goes both ways.

Rafa is really patriotic. Spaniards are notoriously that way, very machismo and prideful about their flag, monarchy, etc.

I think he would feel a little funny about retiring in France as opposed to Spain.

Also, that's in early summer...I doubt he will do that. Gotta be end of year.

And yeah that statue is weird. If I were him, I wouldn't be super flattered..."Just put my name on the stadium, no?"

Federev

Legend
I think if he has control over it, it will be more modest than Fed’s.

Which will be easier if it’s at the end of a singles tournament.

But it should be huge, he deserves it - and Fed should definitely try to pull out all the stops.

But Rafa will probably limit what’s allowed to happen.

He strikes me as someone who doesn’t really relish the limelight as much as Fed or Novak.

He’s mostly straightforward and clear emotionally. I love that about him.

Rafa has always liked to play in front of a big crowd, his fans give him energy. He always thanks fans for supporting him. He won't retire (in 5+ years) silently.

If they loved him, would they have turned him into some sort of tin foil scissorhands monster?
You don't understand contemporary art. The metal statue of Rafa was created by Spanish artist, Jordi Díez Fernandez. "The idea of suspending it was intended to imply that the ball is going very fast," explains Díez.
¤¤ Jordi Diez Fernandez is regarded as one of Spain’s best sculptors. He loves to work exclusively with stainless steel, a metal that provides luminosity, among many other qualities, and that turns his creations into an artistic novelty, admired by experts in figurative and contemporary art. ¤¤

The worst thing that can happen to him is to be injured for a whole year and then retire suddenly like Fed did.
Fed stayed for too long, and i have a feeling Rafa will do the same.
That could lead to an ugly last defeat at GS sadly,or just walkover before the slam.
It's not a way to go.

I know, but they turned him into a fractured liquid metal nightmare reject!
