Genuine question if anyone knows the answer please
ThanksMiami, Paris and Shanghai.
Miami and Paris. Won Shanghai's spot back when it was still Madrid Indoors, so he has 7/9 Masters.
Miami is quite tough for him to win.
Correct. He doesn't need to win Shanghai to complete the set, only Miami and Paris.
Yup...just like Federer only needs MC and Rome...though for him that ship has probably sailed...in Nadal's case he has still a couple of years to try and win both of them, though i personally doubt he will...
Speaking of slots,
Federer won his his 2012 Madrid title in the 2nd clay slot and his rest clay Masters in the 3rd clay slot.
So Federer only needs one of MC or Rome and is on 8/9 now?
Him not winning Miami is one of the really strange anomaly's of this modern age. Just call him Al Gore. It makes no sense.
Well not really Shanghai. Though he hasn't won that tournament, he won the predecessor for that slot - the Madrid Indoor. Masters 1000 events have changed over players' careers. What is important in this count is slots not specific locations. If one doesn't agree with that, then we can't say that Djokovic hasn't won them all, as he never won Hamburg, when it was a masters 1000 - which was during his playing career. Hence, slots are the important thing not specific tournaments.Miami, Paris and Shanghai.

Yes. We can't really focus on current events, otherwise it has bad implications. Last year Djokovic completed the set. However, if one of his set dropped off the year he retires and is replaced by a new event - then does he lose the status of 'having all of the Masters 1000's'? No he doesn't or shouldn't. He has won all of the slots.This.
Historically, he has indeed won 7 of the 9 (Madrid Indoors being the precursor to Shanghai). Of the current Masters events, he is missing 3: Miami, Shanghai and Paris-Bercy.
Indeed. If people are only going to look at the "slot" and not the actual tournament, then Federer has won 8 slots:
Slot 1: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2012 2017
Slot 2: 2005, 2006, 2017
Slot 4: 2012
Slot 5: 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009
Slot 6: 2004, 2006
Slot 7: 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015
Slot 8: 2006, 2014, 2017
Slot 9: 2011
Just call him Al Gore. It makes no sense.

Indeed. In this context, I guess it would be more relevant to talk about Masters Slots rather than just Masters themselves. Nadal has won 7 of the 9 Masters Slots.
He’s missing Miami, Shanghai, and Paris. Technically, he’s not missing Shanghai because Madrid Indoors used to be in that timeslot. He won it against Ljubicic in his (underrated) 2005 season. Granted, it was indoor hard when he played it and not outdoor hard like Shanghai is now but I don’t think it makes too much of a difference. Ljube still woulda choked anyway.

What was the Madrid indoor in 2005 if it can’t be counted as a Masters 1000 achievement for Nadal?I think slots were more important back in the days of Lendl because they changed much more often. I do agree that Nadal won the Shanghai "slot" but if we are being picky, Shanghai has been a Masters tournament for 10 years now. He has had ample time to win it really and not the same as Hamburg being a Masters for only 3 years of Djokovic's career. I still don't think Nadal has to win this one to complete his set though.

At least she actually won to be fairCould also call him Ocasio-Cortez lol
At least she actually won to be fair
She's in a very safe district as I recall. Absolute rusted on DemocratThe fact that people voted for her is the most concerning part lol.
Quite true. Roy Moore won the Alabama Republican primary after all....which is perpetrated on both sides of the political spectrum! The entire South is rusted, corrosed, welded, and melted into a blob of "RED!" Even child molesters and affirmed bigots have Republican ssupporters as long as they have an "R" behind their names!

I was, dare I say, optimistic before he took office but since then it's been awful. Some people have gone rabid with hatred and say he's an agent of Russia etc but the reality is just that he's incompetent and incapable and the American people deserve much, much better. The neoliberal paradigm of war and corporatism with a smile as pushed by the mainstream Democratic party isn't much better though. Bernie and AOC and such seem to offer a real alternative to help the many, rather than the few, guided by principle, even if much of their platform is unrealistic in our current system.
I don't think a lot of us care that much. I'm just politically minded and our own politics is so boring I go looking for the blockbuster spectacle that is the American systemAre Australians usually that much into American politics or is not common? Not that there is anything wrong with it but if I lived in another country, I would be quite uninterested in seeing much of the swamp that is Capitol Hill, US.

Fair enough. All I know is I got what I wanted - a reformed Democratic party. All it took was 4 years of Republicans in office, and what's more is they didn't get too much done anyway.
Either way, we're derailing this thread. We should probably move to a DM or stop.

You'd agree then that if Nadal wins Miami and the Paris indoor and NOT win Shanghai - he should still get the Career Golden Masters (to use the ATP term). No it absolutely is a Masters 1000 for him and I think it does count towards his slot. I'm just playing devil's advocate here and saying it has been a Masters for decade now.

That was more like where one player gets more points than the other player but still loses. In the 2008 Wimbledon final Roger Federer won 1 more point but lost the match. Can happen in tennis as in politics.Except Al Gore won.

2011 Miami was probably the closest he got to winning one.
Could've been a crucial match for him to win in hindsight, as he would have broken Djokovic's win streak and could've gotten some confidence into the rest of 2011.
Nole has singlehandedly stopped Rafa from overtaking Roger so far in the MAJOR's race after having such a good 2010! That was Nadal's best chance to hold onto the #1 ranking for a significant amount of time, but it was not to be! It was around then I heard some nonsense about Rafa wanting the rankings to encompass 2 seasons instead of 1! Roger put the cobash on it as President of the ATP back then! Nole beat Rafa 6 times that season; all in finals (2 Majors)! To this day, Nole's the only player with 2 "7 match" winning streaks over Rafa!
