What music are you listening to? v1.0

Hello all, as this is the Odds & Ends folder of the board, i would like to make a casual poll: What music are you currently listening to? This doesn't mean you have to be listening to a song at the current reading of this post/replying of this thread, but it can if you feel like it. Again, it's casual, and i think it'd be interesting to see what kind of music everyone is into/listening to.

You can post an album, a song, an artist/group/band, anything!
Let's get started!

I'm listening to the Distillers: Die on the Rope

(I'm not even a big distillers fan, just got bored of my current play list.)

Coda

Get Up Kids/Live!

Mando Diao/Hurricane Bar

Kings of Convieniance/Riot On An Empty Street

After a few months of The Killers am waiting for the next band to catch my fancy.

I'm a big Oasis fan but their single "Lyla" is sh!te. "Rubbish" as them blokes over there would say.

Contrastingly, I've been listening to a lot of Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra recently.

Yea they're amazing, the older stuff is the best though like: Just A Day, Buck Rogers, Seven Days In The Sun etc...

I'm also listening to the new Coldplay album TOO much, it's great though.

Ha! Did I say that out loud?

You like this and you know it
Caution, is so explosive
Them chickens is ash and I'm lotion

The Neptunes produced most of the tracks... With Kanye/Jermaine Dupri/Twista/Snoop crashing the party.

No whoopie cushions for me this year as I'll be out of town on the 4th of july, most likely in Europe. You playing at Tennisport?

Don't mean to give ya flack, but da' lyrics from "It's Like That" ain't exactly phat. But I too'll quote Carey crap...saying this about that....oh snap, this is wack:

"I came to the party
Open up the Bacardi
Feeling so hot tamale
Boy, I know you watchin' me
So what's it goin' to be?"

Again....david! david! david! ;-)

About tennisport: I don't play there (play at a club in Westchester), anway, have a friend who played at Fila and is now at Tennisport. Last year we did dinner/fireworks at Fila and are doing the same at Tennisport (I assume dinner "upfront" as well.....hmmmm.....maybe I should cop some K.F.C. just in case). Btw, The "Neps" produced most of the tracks? I thought L.A. Kayne co-pro'd...my bad.

I hear the restaurant at Tennisport is lovely, never been myself though.

Where is your club in Westchester? I've been playing quite often at the Bonnie Briar CC last summer... Friend of mine wanted me to hit the golf course with him. I would take a few hits at the range and would naturally find my way back to the courts... They have like 4 har-tru and 2 beaten up red clay courts...

Yeah you're right it's not his standard fare... Hmm I'll have to keep an eye out for those other versions. Never heard of Walter Trout, will keep in mind. I have Stevie's Austin City Limits performance in my netflix queue...I've seen it 3 or 4 times on PBS but always w/ crappy pledge drives in the middle. Wish I could've seen him in person. He was the first musician I remember actually feeling down about upon hearing the news of his death. boo.

Ok dire, Top 5 Favorite Artists here...

New Order, Travis, Oasis, The Stone Roses, and Badly Drawn Boy.

But I do honestly believe and will not be convinced otherwise, the Greatest Album of All Time to be... The Joshua Tree by U2.

While we're talking about music here... did anyone go to Glastonbury this year (and survive)?

I think i'm a bit young to have the same tastes as you, although i think oasis is one of the greater bands of all time. Never really got into music until maybe.. 5-7 years ago, i'd say. What kind of bands are all the names you mentioned? Brief description? Maybe i'll make a list of stuff to get ;D

Welp, they're all bands from Britain, and none have really gotten much billing in the States, except for New Order circa late '80s.

Hmm...you could almost say it was a progression... New Order -> The Stone Roses -> Oasis -> Travis. New Order circa '80 and still going. Biggest hit was "Blue Monday" back in around '87. In short: started as punk, then went club, and from the '90s are are sort of a mixture. Their signature songs are always punctuated by heavy basslines with a bright guitar or synthesizer on top. Some of the more dancable songs are very upbeat, others more depressing and contemplative due to the history of the band no doubt (check it out sometime)

The Stone Roses are a Manchester based band from the end of the '80s into 90. Only had one <good, full-length> album, but ooooooh is it a doozie. Very jangly Britpop sound, fused some club sounds with pop. You could say they with the Happy Mondays (with some other help) started the Britpop movement/sound of the early '90s, which spawned acts like Oasis, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene, and the list goes on.

You know Oasis... I'm waiting to hear more than their single "Lyla" from this new album. Grrr doesn't sound good IMO.

Travis are a group from Scotland who formed in the around the mid '90s... Best release was their '97 album "The Man Who". IMO, call them a more "sensitive" band. Good mix of hooky rock/pop. Their first album and second ("The Man Who") were a faster paced, younger, more energetic sound. Their latest output hasn't been their best IMO. Also started to dwell on politics and war more. BTW, they'll be playing at Live8 in London... see if you can catch it on tv.

Badly Drawn Boy is a different style altogether. He did the sound track to "About a Boy", probably his most famous work although not his best IMO. I guess you'd classify him as singer/songwriter. But he has a unique style, especially in his rhythm. I got hooked when I saw him live last year. He runs the range from singular guitar/piano to full blown setup with a big ensemble. I like his lastest album "One Plus One is One" best, his first "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" second.

Ok dire, I've erased all the bands I've heard of from your list. That's what's left. Who are these people??? What style of music? You don't have to go through them all that'd take forever and a day. I guess they're new bands? Alt/indie/punk maybe? I'll have to say the band that wins the award for best name has to be "Scapegoat Wax".

My favorite artists are kinda diverse:

Evanescence
Ozzy Osbourne
Phil Collins (& Genesis)
Linkin Park
The Beatles
Aerosmith
2Pac
Three 6 Mafia
AC/DC
Tom Petty

There's a few artists, but there are over 1300 songs on my iPod at the moment; right now I'm listening to Wheel in the Sky - Journey

yowza, that's a lot of bands ;)

Well, i'm not really sure in your tastes of music, and most of them are a little hard to categorize...

Trust Company: hardcore "punk/rock/alternative" download hover and see how you like it, they've been around a LONG time, never made it big

Finch: Softcore 'rock' i guess, They get fairly loud, kind of poppy, letters to you is one of their more popular songs

Thursday - screamy pop rock i suppose
Taking Back Sunday - screamy pop rock. very light and not something you'd listen to seriously for long periods of time.

A Perfect Circle - Tool offshoot, actually pretty great, they get dark and loud at times, but i can listen to most of the album with the parents, if the says anything.

NFG - whiny pop punk band (A New Found Glory), don't listen to them too much, you might kill yourself. Some of their stuff is really catchy, though.

BT - electronica, get "shame". It's an interesting style.

Dynamite Hack - I'm not really even sure about this band, i only have a little of their stuff. They make rock remakes of really popular rap songs, it's pretty funny. Some of their stuff is serious, and it's actually pretty good.

Senses Fail - screamy again, but a lot of cool guitar/background music, unique sound

The Get Up Kids - i guess for some reason the get up kids are the epitome of 'emo', they're a bit indy, but i like their mainstream stuff, try "Mass Pike," "Action & Action" etc. They have a cure Close to Me cover, if you are familiar with that song you'll get a taste for their music pretty quick.

Ugly Duckling - hip hop group, i dont even like hip hop, but they're clever and catchy.

Audiovent - alternative/rock group that is all over the map, sometimes they do vocals/soft, sometimes they can get loud, but pretty much always has yer feet tappin'

Blindside - screamy dark 'rock' (it's hard to categorize these margin bands since they're not really rock, alternative OR punk). They're just a dark sounding band, some of their stuff is good, but again, not something i listen to all the time.

Chevelle - You might've heard these guys, they're kind of a rock band that got popular. "The red" or "Send the pain below" are their popular songs.

Keane - I have no clue what to categorize these guys under. They're like a soft, vocal indy band i guess. They don't have a guitarist :p
Piano/drum/vocals. VERY cool sound. Thsi is a must get, IMO. Try "Bedshaped," "Somewhere only we know," "The walnut Tree"

Fallout Boy - Poppy rock/punk band, they have a similar sound signature to the other common "surfer punk" music out there (such as yellow card, taking back sunday etc) but they do it better, IMO. They've got talent and aren't just riding on a catchy tune.

Phantom Planet - another one of those hard to categorize bands. They just got famous *cough* sellout *cough* but their old stuff is REALLY catchy. Try "In our Darkest Hour", "Always on my mind," "Candlewax" and you'll get a feel for 'em.. they're kind of light, and not hardcore (some people just relaly like hardcore music and stick with it, i'm kind of all over the map).

Hot Rod Circuit - Unique sound signature, i guess it's poppy rock, but just check 'em out. They grow on you, but aren't extraordinary at first or anything.

Lost Prophets - Unique sound/band again, they're rock/alternative, i'd say, they get screamy, but are a pretty interesting band. "Last Summer" "Last train" "Start Something" are their big tracks

Motion City Soundtrack - MUST GET. These guys have a very unique sound, and i have NO clue how to describe it. their entire album is good. I didn't think they were that great at first, and i listened to their album (I am the movie) ONCE through, and i was humming it along in the shower later that day, or the next morning, and i realized how catchy some of their songs were. This was one album i HAD to replay, and it grew on me and i can't get enough of 'em. I hear they're coming out with a new album, too.

Muse - weird band, weird vocals, but are catchy. Not much i can describe about these guys, get "Time is running out" and i think you can decide whether or not they're good or not ;D

Something Corporate - Softcore "rock" band. I saw one of their shows, and was pretty disappointed. They're not a hard rock band, but they played the show like they were -_-
Lead singer plays piano, a LOT of soft/"emo" stuff comin' from these guys, but it's pretty derned good. "Cavanaugh Park," "Hurricane," "Konstantine" are the ones you want. Their older stuff is > *

Smile Empty Soul - screamy pop punk/rock band. Get "Bottom of a bottle" it's their mainstream song. The rest of the album isn't stellar, but not bad.

Scapegoat Wax - interesting name, awesome sound signature. They are INTERESTING. kind of upbeat, sometimes hip hoppy, but it's sort of like... hmm.. rhythmic, they don't rely on beats, they DO sing, i wouldn't categorize it in a rock style band, they're more "rappy" but it's not like modern "ghetto" rap, get "bloodsweet" i think you will get a good idea about how they are ;D

Taproot - WEIRD band. very screamy, check out "low life"
The Juliana Theory - one of those weird bands, they are not bad. Not rock, but a little softer than that. "Into the Dark" "Don't push love away" they are the type that sing the song, they don't scream it too much. Interesting voice.

The Starting Line - another one of those surfer punk bands that get really popular then fall off the charts ;P

Tilt - woman vocals, sounds a little like sleater kinney, nothing to comment on, not amazing, i just caught myself diggign the album on one of the play-throughs, and put it on my 'fan' list.

Year of the Rabbit - this is almost on my must get list. They're an interesting band, good guitar, good rhythm, interesting voice, sort of like an audioslave voice, but i think the sound is pretty refined. Check out "Rabbit Hole". They did a cover of a really popular euro rock band's song, but i can't for the life of me remember which one it is... My bro picked up their CD just cause it was cheap and the name sounded cool, and he was really happy he stumbled upon them ;D

Zero 7 - another MUST GET. No clue how to categorize these guys, they're sort of... rhythmic + vocal. Sometimes they have a female vocalist, sometimes they have a male one, i think they're european, maybe british? You can't hear it in their music, though... Slow, soft, something a rock fan might not like, but i have to be honest, they're GOOD. Soothing, not really jazzy, but ... just listen to them ;)

Edit: totally didn't recommend any tracks... get "Somersault", "Home," "In the waiting line"

When it Falls or Simple things are the names of their albums... Sometimes the songs dont' even have vocals, which is interesting. The record is remastered pretty crappy, there is distortion and clipping/clicking frequently in the recordings, but it's almost un-noticeable, i have studio/professional oriented headphones, so i pick up a lot of details that other people might not hear...

(Alessandro MS-1)

Anyways, as you can see i have no problem typing a lot -_-

I can tell we have different musical tastes, most of my stuff is a bit.. non hardcore, but it's catchy if you give it a try... if you have a hard time finding samplers for this stuff shoot me an e-mail, or you can AIM me under the same handle. I'm online almost all the time, i'll be gone this weekend, though. I don't have a problem with MP3's or downloading music, but i fully recommend people buy their music...
There. now i dont' feel guilty about recommending people download this stuff ;D

BIG EDIT: listen to "The Music" They're a new-age rock band... waaaay cool.

Current songs in heaviest rotation:
Coldplay - A Message
Dave Matthews Band - You Might Die Trying

All time most played would likely include:
Coldplay - Yellow
Dave Matthews - Warehouse (Red Rocks)
Beatles - Revolution
Jason Mraz - No Doubling Back
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul to Squeeze
Eagles - Hotel California
Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson
Kanye West - Jesus Walks
Jay-Z - My First Song

Not on my computer as much as I was during the school year, and I can't download new songs with the 28k connection here, so this list isn't as good as it could have been.
