I never knew they were popular across the pond. Good choice :)

Not too much yet, but I have a cousin in London who recommends a lot of cool stuff to me - love European musicians, they are way ahead of the North Americans in terms of dance/techno, eh?

Nice one, Empire is best imo.

You got Bloc Partys new album? It's only the leaked version before it comes out in February but even though it's unfinished it's still amazing.

Nope haven't heard it yet. You mean leaked as in on P2P's like Limewire? I might wait and buy the album, I don't buy music often though:p

I like Bloc Party (are they not touring right away?) and Arctic Monkeys. I also really like Snow Patrol (I know they're not English) but cool indie style. Club Foot is actually the song on my creepyspace page right now. :)

Yeh leaked onto P2P. I've listened to Silent Alarm so much that when I saw that A Weekend In The City had been leaked I had to download it straight away.

They were touring with Panic! At The Disco I think. The drummer suffered a collapsed lung though so they had to pull out.

Yeh Snow Patrol are out of this world. After their last album doing so well you could of excused them if they produced a slightly weaker follow up but Eyes Open is probably even better. So many bands fail to follow sucess up but Snow Patrol have been amazing and produced a modern classic.

Exactly. The musicians are so talented and they aren't one hit wonders or bubble gum fluff which drives me batty (hey, I should add that to the I Hate thread). I also am crazy about James Blunt - amazing voice, eh? I'll do a search for the leaked stuff and see if I can't nab it. Thanks. :)

Welp, they're all bands from Britain, and none have really gotten much billing in the States, except for New Order circa late '80s.

Hmm...you could almost say it was a progression... New Order -> The Stone Roses -> Oasis -> Travis. New Order circa '80 and still going. Biggest hit was "Blue Monday" back in around '87. In short: started as punk, then went club, and from the '90s are are sort of a mixture. Their signature songs are always punctuated by heavy basslines with a bright guitar or synthesizer on top. Some of the more dancable songs are very upbeat, others more depressing and contemplative due to the history of the band no doubt (check it out sometime)

The Stone Roses are a Manchester based band from the end of the '80s into 90. Only had one <good, full-length> album, but ooooooh is it a doozie. Very jangly Britpop sound, fused some club sounds with pop. You could say they with the Happy Mondays (with some other help) started the Britpop movement/sound of the early '90s, which spawned acts like Oasis, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene, and the list goes on.

You know Oasis... I'm waiting to hear more than their single "Lyla" from this new album. Grrr doesn't sound good IMO.

Travis are a group from Scotland who formed in the around the mid '90s... Best release was their '97 album "The Man Who". IMO, call them a more "sensitive" band. Good mix of hooky rock/pop. Their first album and second ("The Man Who") were a faster paced, younger, more energetic sound. Their latest output hasn't been their best IMO. Also started to dwell on politics and war more. BTW, they'll be playing at Live8 in London... see if you can catch it on tv.

Badly Drawn Boy is a different style altogether. He did the sound track to "About a Boy", probably his most famous work although not his best IMO. I guess you'd classify him as singer/songwriter. But he has a unique style, especially in his rhythm. I got hooked when I saw him live last year. He runs the range from singular guitar/piano to full blown setup with a big ensemble. I like his lastest album "One Plus One is One" best, his first "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" second.

Badly drawn boy is awesome, I love the song fall in a river on hour of the bewilderbeast

Way to revive a 3-year-old thread when there's about a billion of these kinds of threads that are much more recent and only a few pages back...

But whatever.
