Dear members,

Let me give a brief description of our capabilities:
Me: 34 years old. Went for Tennis lessons when I was 15 years for about a year. Got hit in the head from a racket and unfortunately stopped playing. Started taking lessons again recently (into our 2nd session).
Wife: Never played tennis before. So far she has gone for 2 tennis lessons.

The rackets we currently have:
Me: Wilson Hammer Tour. String weight 320g. A problem I find with this racket is that it turns in my hand when returning powerful strokes.
Wife: Prince TT Scream OS. Strung weight 300g.

When asking advice about the rackets, our coach said to go for lightweight rackets in the 250g range.

We don't have much of a selection in our region, so these are the rackets I have to choose from:
- Babolat AeroPro Drive GT
- Babolat Pure Aero
- Babolat Pure Drive GT
- Head Ti S5
- Wilson n code n6
- Wilson pro staff classic 6.1
- Wilson Hammer Ti 4.4 si

Would greatly appreciate your feedback as to which racket would suit myself and my wife.

Thank you all in advance.

I would get the head S5. That’s what I started out with, after being out for 15 years+. My wife still uses her’s too. I haven’t hit with it in years, but it’s a good starter frame.

Being in your 30's I wouldn't be going for something in the 250g range, it's probably the worst thing you could do. I've got 10 year old kids using that weight range. I'd be looking at the 285g range and up ( maybe include 275g if you must)
From the ones you have listed I wouldn't buy any of them. Since we all have access to the Internet? Why not buy something from here (TW) as you then have access to more variety and price. Some models I'd look at would be:
1. One of the Pro Kennex racquets in the 285g - 300g weight range. They are well priced and cimfortable on your arm.
2. Yonex DR and E Zone light's or even Astrel
3. Volkl V Sense V1, 4, 6, 8 light)
4. Head Instinct mp
5. Wilson Khamsin 5
6. Dunlop 3.0 or 5,0 series

Wow. 250 grams as an adult? No thank you.

300-320 grams for you and 290-310 for your wife is in the ballpark of where I would think you would want to be. I would just stick with what you have for a while and take more lessons. Two lessons in is not a good time to buy a racquet. Get 15 lessons in and have a little consistency and then demo a few. Buying something now off any of these recommendations means you may just have a newer and more expensive racquet that doesn't work for you.

If you do decide to buy a new racquet anyway: none of the ones you have listed. Find something around 300-320ish strung with a 310-325 swing weight, 100 sq inches, with a stiffness between 62 and 67.

I would think your wife may do well around 290-310ish strung with a 310-320 swing weight, 100 - 105 sq inches, with a stiffness between 62 and 67.

Your racquet is twisting in your hands because you aren't hitting the ball clean. If you hit in the center, it won't rotate. If you hit off center and have a loose grip like you should, most racquets will.

Is there another coach in the area?

sorry I would pick out his and hers towels.
so I would have to pass on the racquets also.
again, i would highly suggest TW's demo -ing program.
you can also talk to a tech.
I would suggest around an 11oz, head light frame, 16 x19 (100-104 heads size)
tons of great choices out there.

I would suggest staying away from the very light frames, which are normally head heavy and stiff...
below 10.8 oz...

Does your Hammer Tour a a fresh grip ? I ask since that may be part of the reason for slipping in your hand.
More lesson before you start demoing frames.

Thank you all for your replies. I am so grateful that many of you replied to this question as I was completed lost.

Also I forgot to mention that I am from the small island nation of Sri Lanka. I am 5'6" and wife also same height. I am 70KG weight and wife is 60KG. Coach was saying that since we are small framed ppl its better to go for lightweight rackets but reading posts in this wonderful forum I was wondering about that.

@JoshTheLMT One of my favs was the ti S6 because of the large head size. Thank you for recommending this.
@Crocodile I have heard good things about the pro kennex and yonex on this forum so will certainly have a look at your recommendations
@jonestim I had a look at hte links you sent and those look like quite good rackets for beginners. As you said, let me get a few lessons under my belt.
@CopolyX Thank you for the recommendations. Maybe I should be patient when selecting my new racket
@PBODY99 Yes I actually recently replaced with factory grip and put in an overgrip as well. You bring in a good point.

My two cents:
- Keep away from that racquets!
- Change coach asap...
Him and many others in the country mentioned to go for lightweight rackets because apparently our physique cannot handle heavy ones? Could you let me know why lightweight rackets (eg. Head Ti S5) are bad?

Dear dilshant, they are bad for many-many reasons.
I can write "a book" here with the cons...
Let's mention two basics, one for the health and another for the wealth!
With a light racquet your muscles have to do a heavy job in order to hit back a ball.
A heavier racquet does that heavy job for you. That's means less injuries for you....
A very light racquet like that (250g) is going to be "overcomed" as you improve just in a few weeks.
That means that in a very short time you will buy another racquet.
And the previous so light toy-racquets they don't have any resale value...

Please keep those two at the moment.
I hope to be enough!
;)

Thank you @Simplicius. Very sound advice :)

A tennis swing is a collision. Would you rather be in a collision driving an SUV or a Austin mini?

Now think about hitting a tennis ball with an overly light racket. Where is the impact force going to go? Right into your arm.

Light rackets are for people that just bunt slow paced balls around. They are harmful and useless when hitting faster paced balls with full swings.

300 gm for you, 290 for her.
