9-0 in his last 3.5 season making it to sectionals. He's been playing with 4.0/4.5s during his time off. I feel pretty comfortable standing on this limb.

What about the fact that A) USTA didn't bump him after the 9-0 season; and B) he appealed and was rejected? Or the fact that he's coming back from injuries? You left those out.

If USTA twice failed to bump him to 4.0, why would we think your judgment is superior?

He had a 3.5C years ago. Even if it's within the three year window it is just a reflection of where he was not where he is now. I just don't understand sandbagging and why anyone would want to do it.

As a reference point, what % of your opponents would you say were sandbagging?

Man...all those sandbaggers and liars. Leagues and tennis must be painful for you amigo. I do get it though since when I started I hated getting my butt handed to me. Everyone seemed to be playing out of rating. And there are plenty of stories with well-known players and teams that always appear in nationals somehow that kinda spoil the fun. I ain't mad at ya.

We are lucky to have a very competitive district and section and not a lot of ACTUAL sandbagging (especially at 3.5), save a few well-known players who don't want to play 4.5 so they edge things to get bumped back to 4.0. Our 4.0 leagues are the best combination of fun and competitiveness, so makes sense. Even when our 3.5 team did go to sectionals, there wasn't outright sandbagging, even in some match blow outs. There were players you knew were going to get bumped based on play and records, but that is the things about sectionals and nationals - you end up with (hopefully) the top players and teams and the competition is very tough. Personally I don't need sectionals and nationals, but do need the competition.

"I need competition so I'm going to play down where I will always win instead of playing at my actual level. "

Gotta love that logic:D

7 years later is it a surprise their #1 guy in the 3rd place match is a 3.5A? As is another guy that played for n the semifinal match.
No idea - I have no connection or insight into that team or its members.
I just liked the banner since I didn't know there even was a 2.5 Mixed division!
I always thought mixed numbering was for example 8.0 where you could have 3.5 + 4.5, 4.0 + 4.0, etc.
So 2.5 mixed is ???
Whatever it is, it seems to be the title one could most aspire to!

Totally screwed up my self rating questionnaire. Could've been playing 2.5 Mixed.
My thoughts exactly! If only I could go back 10 years or so to when I self-rated... unfortunately I would have needed to self-rate 3.0 minimum, but that still would have worked to get me those National titles that I so richly deserve!
Instead like an idiot I self-rated 4.0 and then messed up further by failing to manage my rating and getting bumped up a couple of years later.
Oh well, opportunities missed...

Sadly 2.5 is a thing to ensure it's two 2.5s paired together instead of sandbagging to 2.0 to play with a 3.0

There is such a thing as a 2.0 ?!?
It is on the scale and I've seen players self-rated as 2.0s, but never a year-end rating of 2.0. Mind you, some players have dynamic ratings I estimate to be in the range for a 2.0, I just don't think the USTA ever gives out a 2.0C regardless of it being merited or not.
