What records do you think Federer will equal/break in 2010?

After another great year in 2009, what records do you think Roger Federer will be able to equal/break in 2010?

Australian Open
Will he break the record he shares with Ivan Lendl of 6 consecutive semifinals?

Will he equal Andre Agassi on 4 Australian Open titles?

French Open
Will he break the record he shares with Björn Borg and Rafael Nadal of 4 consecutive finals?

Wimbledon
Will he break the record he shares with Boris Becker and Pete Sampras of 7 Wimbledon finals?

Will he equal Sampras on 7 Wimbledon titles?

US Open
Will he break the record he shares with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras of 5 US Open titles?

Majors
Will he equal his own record of 10 consecutive Major finals by reaching the finals of the first 3 Majors of the year?

Will he break his consecutive Major finals record by reaching the finals of all 4 Majors in 2010?

Masters Series
Will he break Andre Agassi's record of 17 Masters Series titles?

Rankings
Will he break Pete Sampras' record of 286 weeks as World #1?

Will he equal Pete Sampras' record of 6 year-end #1's?

-----------------------------------------------------

I've left out the World Tour Finals for now, as Federer may equal the record 5 wins held by Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras this week and be looking for a 6th next year.

This is a meant to be a fun thread predicting what people think Federer will achieve next year, so I'll be expecting nothing less than maximum trolling. :)

so I'll be expecting nothing less than maximum trolling. :)

Ok, if you says so! :)

First he'll break the record for luckiest player in ATP history.

Then he'll get the ATP Trophy for #1 Largest Nose on tour- as voted by his peers.

Federer will then grow a ponytail to be the first player since Pat Rafter on the ATP to lose his ponytail and re-gain it.

Then he'll chase Djokovic for the record of most losses to Rafael Nadal

Should be an exciting 2010

:lol::lol:

I like Roger and his game, but he has alot of competition so a good year is almost certain but I don't expect a great one.

Australian Open
I don't think he will break the record he shares with Ivan Lendl of 6 consecutive semifinals, but is certainly a possibility.

I find it highly unlikely he will equal Andre Agassi on the 4 Australian Open titles.

French Open
He might break the record he shares with Björn Borg and Rafael Nadal of 4 consecutive finals but I won't be holding my breath and certainly the title here is unlikely.

Wimbledon
If Federer is going to break any records this year this is where he is most likely to do so. He will no longer share this record with Boris Becker and Pete Sampras of 7 Wimbledon finals as he will defend the championship.

He will overtake Sampras with 8 Wimbledon titles.

US Open
I think there will be so much competition that it is almost impossible for him to break the record he shares with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras of 5 US Open titles.

Majors
I don't even envision Roger making a final the first two majors of the year.

Masters Series
I think it is almost certain he will win at least one and break Andre Agassi's record of 17 Masters Series titles.

Rankings
He might break Pete Sampras' record of 286 weeks as World #1, that is about a 50/50 chance, but I don't see him

equaling Pete Sampras' record of 6 year-end #1.

Based on what?

Based on: Roger doesn't seem to be playing quite as tough a game as consistently as he was up until the last year, and while he is far from finished as a contender, IMO hard courts are where he can be more vulnerable, so many other guys in the top ten that can beat him on that surface if they are playing at their best, especially if he is a little off his game. I don't think he will get to the semi's but I wouldn't rule out the possibility. Just a prediction based on his recent inconsistencies and an eventual inevitable decline.

Right now I would say the only guy who has even a reasonable chance to beat Federer in a hard court slam is Del Potro. Losing before the semis, LOL! I doubt that very much. Djokovic can beat him sometimes in best of 3 but I dont see him beating Federer in a slam again anytime soon. Murray has lost twice in a row to Federer on hard courts now, and was destroyed the one time he played Federer in a hard court slam. Nadal right now, just no. Anyone outside the top 5 beating Federer in a hard court slam, a huge NO.

As for Australia I think Federer still has the best chance to win there right now. Djokovic and Del Potro have a decent shot as well. Murray has given no indication his slam drought is nearing an end, in fact if anything he looks to be falling back. Nadal definitely will not be defending his title there barring a miracle. You wont see a dark horse win it.

You wont see a dark horse win it.

A "dark horse" doesn't have to win it to knock out a major contender. Yes, Roger is indeed still a MAJOR contender but lets face it, he has shown some inconsistencies as of late and at this stage of his career, it won't be getting any easier with the top five and even the top ten gunning for him. I don't think guys like Nadal, Djoker, del Potro, Roddick, Tsonga, Soderling, Murray, etc. are nearly as intimidated by the great Roger Federer as they were a couple of short years ago, although they have an obvious respect for him as they should. Federer's "automatic" advancement to at least the semi final round is not as secure as it once might have been.

Well, doom-sayers are basically saying the same thing as last year, and they were wrong last year. Yet, this year, he has played better and more consistently than last year. Were it not for losing matches that were on his racket vs. Nadal at the AO and Delpo at the USO, he'd now have the Grand Slam. But things happen. In any event, 2 slams and appearing in all slam finals is an excellent year no matter which way you cut it, by anyone's standards.

Delpo is imo prospectively the 2nd best player on HC. Federer is still the best on HC though. Nadal's game is in disarray for a variety of reasons, and Delpo has only shown that he can win a GS at the USO, and hasn't yet shown that he's a consistent threat at slams. We don't know yet whether he'll be more like Ivan Lendl or Marat Safin. I suspect somewhere in-between; he isn't as inconsistent as Safin, and seems to love the game more. But he's still a big guy, which takes a toll on the body, and creates a naturally unbalanced game (net-game and hitting off low shots will suffer).

Nadal wont be beating any top player in a hard court slam the way he is playing now, or even come close to doing so in fact. Roddick is done on hard courts, he has been rubbage since Wimbledon. On grass he could still be a contender, but that is it. He would be a dream quarterfinal draw in a hard court slam for a top 4 seed at this point. Tsonga beating Federer in a slam on any surface, ROTFL, I know you like him but get real. Soderling still today has to play out of his mind to just get a set from Roger, and very rarely even does that. Djokovic is one of the favorites for any upcoming hard court slam, but was handled soundly by Federer in their last 2 big matches, including the U.S Open semis. Del Potro is a threat if they play obviously, but can he handle the heat in Australia, and can he even survive guys like Djokovic or Murray to get to Roger. Murray has lost his last two matches to Federer in best of 3 on hard courts, and his chances in the best of 5 in a slam go down alot more.

So basically while you throw out alot of names, you really havent analyzed it with much thought.

.....and if Roddick hadn't given away the final at Wimbledon that he held on his racquet in the first couple of sets, Federer would only have won the "Nadal-less" French.

Nadal was at the French and lost. It was only Nadal-less in the sense he wasnt able to advance to the final. If you want to go into what-ifs if Federer had not squandered a bunch of break chances in the 2nd set, and had not faltered serving for the 2nd set, he would have won the U.S Open title in straight sets. Had he not blown so many break chances and leads in the first 4 sets of the Australian Open final he would have won in 3 or 4 sets, not even going to a 5th set. He was in all 4 slam finals, won 2, and had chances to win all 4 of them.

I like Roger Federer, ALOT! I enjoy watching him play as much as anyone I have ever seen. He has been and will continue to be a great champion and contender. However, if anyone is naive enough to believe he can continue this incredible run indefinitely they are either blind or in a complete state of denial. I saw Roger tested to the limits and in some cases suffer losses this past year that two or three years ago would have been unthinkable. Don't shoot the messenger. Time catches up with everybody and unless he retires fairly soon, and that isn't likely, he will get taken down. The signs are on the wall.

Well, Federer played better this year than last year. It seems time hasn't had any detrimental incremental affect on him his year vs. last year (although it has for these last two years vs. 2007).

Naysayers have been predicting Federer's decline for a long time. It started in 2007 after the AO that he won, yet he won 3 slams. Then in 2008, after still a very good year, people were saying it before the USO. Now he's completed his career in 2009 with a FO win and reclaimed Wimbledon. Yet there are still doomsayers?

Yes, it is true that Federer's reign cannot continue forever. At some point, he will eventually not be a slam contender anymore. At some point, he'll fall out of the top ten. That's still a long ways away. He can certainly repeat the success he's had this year next year.

Maybe it would be wisest for the naysayers to at least wait until he has a few years of slamless years? But even then, perhaps they should just keep their holes shut? Sampras hadn't won a slam for two years when he won his last USO final. So great champions shouldn't be continually doubted.

I think the records he will break are his own, ergo he will win another slam and increase his semis streak :D

I will be happy if Fed takes the SF streak to 26!!!, wins one slam and makes a final. who cares about masters series?

Anything else is gravy at this point.
