i first saw at marat safin was 1998 RG ROUND 2 VS GUGA
he beat defending champ guga at five and reach 4th round

and his 2000 season is i think that best one slam season beside andy murray in 2016
his 2000 season is so impactful
he won 2000 at barcelona , hamburg , marjorca , rogers cup , us open , tashkent , paris masters
so won seven title and reached final 9 time
then , he beat pete sampras at 2000 us open in straight set

what 's the reason he raise his level and goes more slam at 2001 ~ 2002
i know he injury at 2003
he definally shot at the 2001 AO , 2001 RG , 2001 USO , 2002 AO , 2002 RG , 2002 USO
wasted of talent

Agreed, the guy retired a decade ago.

But to answer the question, Safin was very lazy, unprofessional and often injured. Which is why 90% of his career he was underachieving. In fact, the guy failed to win an event after winning AO, despite playing another 5 years...
