What saddens me about Federer...

What saddens me about Federer is that as of now it seems like Nadal might end up with the slams record and Djokovic with the weeks at number one record.

Don’t get me wrong even if he finishes at number two in both statistics it will still be amazing, however just like Sampras he might lose both of his biggest records.

But unlike Sampras he will still have a claim for GOAT because I doubt Nadal or Djokovic will pass him by a huge amount, just barely.

It’s surprising how much history has happened in the past couple of decades, not only Federer, Nadal and Djokovic but also with Serena on the women’s side. Truly captivating.

Is Djokovic guaranteed to pass him at this point or could he lose the no.1 ranking before?

Sampras is still a legend in his own right. Anybody who knows anything about tennis knows he’s right up there with Federer as the best of all time on grass . He would smoke Nadal and Djokovic on fast grass just like Federer would. No matter how many French titles Nadal wins he will never be close to the best grass or hard court player of all time.

Nobody is questioning the greatness of Sampras but when he retired he was the undisputed GOAT for many people and now he has been surpassed by three players. But I do love Sampras and I think he’s an amazing champion definitely Top 5.

Now that Roger is retired, only Novak can stop Rafa at Wimbledon: should he win the channel slam, he already would be at 22.

That's enough in my book.

He might even go to 24.

It is puzzling and sad to see so much rampant disrespect for Pete here. One thing's for certain - if Nadal tried to return serve at Wimbledon 50 yards back, Pete would destroy him. He'd just come in and knock off the volley in .02 seconds.

Are you saying that Sampras is a much better server and grass court player then Federer? Nadal still manages to do well at least in his prime against amazing servers on grass, so I don’t think it’s logical to say that Sampras will destroy him. If I was underrating Sampras then you are underrating Nadal too. But I never underrated Sampras when it comes to his talent I was just talking about tennis records.

I’m not who you quoted but I recall they person saying fast grass in which case it changes comparisons quote a bit. When Nadal played Fed it was no longer the fast grass of old.

How many of the servers that Nadal faces at Wimbledon these days follow their serve in? If Nadal tried returning Sampras from the back wall, Sampras would be at the net for the easy put away.

Maybe if they play in the first round but I think by the time of the final usually the grass is almost half gone so Nadal would still have a chance to at least make it close.

Also I’m not even sure if your statement is true about fast grass or slow grass, but I am not an expert on that. I do know that for Hardcourts they have made things a little bit slower sometimes but for clay and grass I don’t think it changed that much.

Sampras will definitely have the advantage on any grass over Nadal but on hardcourt it would be pretty even and on clay no contest.

Sampras retired holding the slam record, Federer might not be able to do that.

Sampras played in a time where you had to completely change your game and play style to win all of the majors. You couldn’t just grind your way from the baseline hitting topspin and win all 4 majors. Thats why the career slam used to be unique and people raved about Borg because he played the French and Wimbledon completely different. If you told Nadal to head to Halle which still has fast grass and told him to win the tournament playing serve and volley he would be embarrassed.

Good thing about Fed is that he has won 20 slams and he wont lose them :). Thats 20 fantastic memories. If Nadal wins more then good for him. I used to worry about those records, but the problem is that you miss out on too much fun along the way. I really enjoyed the match today and that is what tennis is all about;)

Agassi did it in Pete’s era so it’s not an excuse...

only on this forum does a guy who has lost only one fully-contested match this year -- on clay to the most dominant clay player ever -- look "very beatable"
Fed almost beat Djok at Wimbledon a year ago, and this version of Djokovic is certainly worse. He is slipping, but it takes a Nadal or Federer to expose that. Though he was lucky to escape the Tsitsipas match.

Why is it nice for Fed? I thought Djokovic is a lock for the YE#1 and weeks records, isn't he?

Fed is still playing.

From 1981 to 2001 Agassi was like the only baseliner to win Wimbledon though.

As far as the topic goes I would view it from a different perspective. If it wasn't for Nadal and Djokovic pushing Federer to continue playing tennis Roger might have retired like 5, 6 or 7 years ago and he also might have been less focused on winning more Slams. He might have finished with 15 or 16 Slams instead of owning 20 now. And he is not finished yet

Federer isn't done. He's going to play at least 4 more slams in 2021 and maybe even more in 2022. He's still a top contender and a very dangerous player thats fully capable of beating anyone. He has a decent shot at winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2021. And NOBODY can argue that fact. So who knows? Federer may end up with 21 soon. And if that happens... Djokovic will definitely never be able to catch him. And as far as Nadal.... well maybe 1 more French. That's it. So lets wait and see what happens next season. 2021 will be the season that says it all.

How do you know Nadal or Djokovic won’t pass his records by a huge amount? Djokovic is a 2-time reigning champion at both the AO and Wimbledon. Nadal has won the last four French Opens (losing 3 sets in total) and the last two USOs he played. Nadal might beat his Slam record by several Slams and Djokovic has a good chance to exceed his #1 weeks record by a lot - I would not bet against these two players.

Again, Federer has only won Wimbledon on 'new grass'!

so don't try it.

Agassi has more fast grass Wimby trophies than Federer does. Let that sink in!

Don't be sad, it's poetry.

Astrologically, Leo rules power & Gemini is the sign of the twins - they attack in pairs.

It is highly poetic that the mighty lion, too strong for any one individual, is going down to the twins.

You think nadal is only winning 1 more french? That dude will still be winning the french when he’s 40. I can see at least 4 more french for Rafa maybe more.

No need to be sad, even if you don't like Nadal, the amount of time he's comeback and proved everyone wrong is unbelievable. Chasing is always difficult.

There will always be room for Sampras in the GOAT debate. Just as there will for Laver and Borg. (Sorry if I am missing anyone, it's late).
Different eras just cannot be compared.

The post I was responding to was assuming Nadal played Pete on FAST grass. Yes, I'm saying Pete is greater and better than Fed on fast grass. Fed last played on that surface in 2002 - all his Wimbledon titles came on medium slow grass (2003) to painfully slow grass (2018).

Sampras was a servebot. RF is the much more complete player.

If RF and the corporate mafia behind him hadn't hyped and lied about the GOAT myth, RF and his fans now wouldn't be so upset.

The hype set up all Fedfans for disappointment. They believed in a lie. Many religions crumble when the truth is exposed.

The nice thing for Fed is that Djok looks very beatable now.
Say what? Novak went 41 matches before another player beat him and it took,Nadal at the FO to do so. If you look at the points, won this year I think Novak has won more points than Nadal and Thiem combined

I don't think anyone would be surprised if he reverted to skipping the clay season again next year.

I'm in a quandary about this....... I really think clay helped Roger play even better on grass last year. I know it sounds ridiculous because of the surface shuffle, but it grooved his grounstrokes amazingly.

With that said, the extra miles on the legs can't be ignored, and Roger has proven he is great on grass with or without the extra groundstroke prep. Additionally, he avoids the risks of the surface shuffle if he skips clay.

For me it depends on whether he has made any longterm decisions about his playing future. Even if his plan for regular seasons going forward is to skip clay, in his final season he will make sure he plays the clay swing imo.

If I could do a bit of "armchair quarterbackin'", the major Roger should skip is US Open...... he keeps on killing himself every year at this event and to me it's the major that takes the most toll on him over recent years.

He also played great at Wimbledon in 2017 when he skipped it for the first time, so I don't think it's necessary.

And a big reason he skipped it that year was because he was a little worried about his knee, which at that point had been operated on nearly a year and a half earlier. For the 2021 clay season he'll be coming in with 2 knee surgeries in the last year.
