What stroke/direction do you like to hit a drop shot?

My favorite drop shot is off the backhand wing that goes down the line. Two of my opponents with really good drop shots both seem to have this same preference. Lately I have been trying to mix it up more by hitting the dropper cross court off my backhand. Every now and then I'll try a drop shot off my forehand but not nearly as many times as off my backhand.

I like hitting the drop shop down the line, even though the net is higher there, because it makes for a harder response from the opponent if they get to the drop shot. I would not suggest hitting drop shots cross court because it give your opponent more time to get to the ball.

I would think that most people hit droppers with the backhand better because not many people have a forehand slice shot. I use a continental grip on that forehand drop, but I would much rather drive the ball on any short, high ball when I would be tempted to hit a dropper.

I play SHBH and have a good slice. On that side, I can drop either high balls (step in to take it early, shape for a topspin backhand but then change grip, break wrist and cut it, like in the Gilbert video) or low balls (shape for a normal low sliced backhand, and just shorten the swing and put a bit of sidespin). But in either case, I generally go down the line and move up to cover a return, very seldom go cross-court and open my own court up.

On the forehand, I seldom drop from the back (and when I do, always down the line). But I often drop / dink it over when I'm reaching for a shorter-but-wide forehand - if my opponent has played a cross-court forehand from the back of his court and/or wide, that's the place furthest away from him, and I can move up to the net to cover that side of the court, so forcing him to do something with his pick-up.

About the only time I drop cross-court is in doubles, on second serves. Often, the server will stay back after those. I step forward to take the ball early and high, which locks the net person in place, and then just break the wrist and slice cross-court to the tramlines, forcing the server to run in and hit a weak upwards shot for my partner to put away.

IMO - the closer you are to the net the more you should hit your DS cross-court. This is a safer shot because it gives you a bigger margin for error.
If you're further back, you can place the DS anywhere it seems prudent.

its easier for me to hit crosscourt ds from both sides but tougher to follow and get in good position fir the response. my down the line shot still needs improvement but like an approach shot it lets you get to net for position better. most pros drop up the line imho
