What to eat before early morning workouts?

I have tennis clinic Monday-Thursday from 6 a.m. to around 9:30 a.m. I am never hungry at 6 in the morning so I usually don't eat until about 10 a.m. when I get back home. In clinic we do fitness for an hour and then drill and play points the rest of the time. Our fitness normally consists of jogging about 2 miles and then speed and agility on the court for about 30 minutes. So, if you guys have any suggestions about what to eat or if I should eat at all, let me know! Thanks :)

I used to down a protein shake and a waffle every morning. The waffle just put something solid in my stomach so i didnt have the protein shake sloshing around. I had issues getting food in me in the morning but would be light headed if i didnt eat.

Eggo makes some "Nurti Grain" waffles that are not that bad for you and pretty filling. I will throw a couple in the toaster most mornings and eat them on the way to work.

Sumo wrestlers do not eat in the morning and workout up to 5 hrs. Then eat huge amounts for lunch, then sleep. May be a good reason to eat before working out, just so you won't over eat at lunch.

I don't eat in the morning and I work out and then nap just like a Sumo. Sometimes I don't eat all day and then eat huge amounts like you said the Sumo Sensei (fat ones who have gone before me) do.
Guess that's what maintains my model looks, and I don't seem to be loosing strength on court or in sparring.
Ivan Lendl used to eat chicken legs between sets (on tour). I would suggest you have a hot steamy bowl of "breakfast of champions" and some saltfish for breakfast...it's made me strong as an ox. Seriously though, nothing wrong with a turkey sandwich in the morning before working out.
In thailand I saw workers gorge themselves on Larb ( a 3 pound spiced bowl of raw beef) every morning before intensive 12 hour days of labor.

umm... wow, I don't think I will be eating any Larb or saltfish, or chicken legs before a 6 a.m. workout, thanks though. :)

Yes, in the long run, not eating in the morning will hold you back. You don't have to take that much time putting something together in the morning. Try like 40g of complex carbs and 20g of lean protein. This can be put together easily with some egg whites and a couple slices of ezekiel bread or a protein shake and some oats or some tuna and green beans if your on a budget.

cameron, my point was that someone may say oatmeal is better for cholesterol and energy and another guy may argue for cheerios when what you need is a turkey sandwich for the task at hand, regardless of that fact that it's early morning.
Not big on Larb myself, but the breakfast of champions and the saltfish are a must!

PBJ Sandwich with a cup of milk does it for me. After workout, I usually have a protein shake and bananas.

Ate kibbee before playing tennis and felt like my stomach was full of lead. Raw meat in the morning, not.

thanks for that article, I fee like I'm in 5th grade again. Pls tell me that this only appeared online. NYT and WSJ used to be the most respected papers in the counrty. This high concept crap seems written for a highschooler...
Kinda naive like the OP, asking for advice from others on how to run his engine....

u can use essential amino acids, if so you dont anything else but perhaps some coffee and mix the acids with some fast carbs.

I usually make a pasta sallad the night before with approx 60-70g carbs, 40-60 g protein and some fat, usually I use a couple of eggs, some chicken or tuna, unions, tomatoes and spices, a little olive oil and the sallad tastes amazing plus u don't need to cook when you wake up, making one now for tomorrows chest workout:)

what do you like to do for chest? besides eat pasta salad? I loooove wroking back but find the chest to be a PITA for some reason, unless it's push ups or flat benching.

On the weekends I often wake up at 6 to try and get to the crowded tennis courts by 7.

I never feel like eating that early and my stomach feels unsettled if I eat too much food or drink orange juice (too much acid).

I like to eat some nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc), maybe a hard boiled egg (i put some salt on it bc I crave salt in the morning) or a few bites of some leftover meat from the night before. For carbs I have some fruit (bannana, peach, melon, etc, - anything that doens't have too much citric acid works for me).

I don't eat too much and I drink a glass of water.

I feel satisfied and energized throughout my 2 hour tennis session. I also bring plenty of water and a quick bite to eat with me.

my pecs was always my weakspot, I've now been working them twice a week for 18 months and they are my best musclegroup, musclecontact is everything especially when ure struggling to make a muscle grow. My arms get big no matter how I work them.
avoiding failure is a good tip also. when I bench i use a weight I can do 7reps with but only do 5s. the last set can be close to fail.

i eat 2 serving (cups) of cereal, 1.5 glasses of milk along with it and 2 bananas...
wait 30 minutes
then after i workout, i drink 1 serving of optimum whey protein isolate (24g of protein, 120cals) along with 2 more bananas...

my work out includes lifting and cardio ( 3 miles )

then in the afternoon (i run 2 more miles)

More specifics on your pec routine, pls, bro.

damn bro, i really have no violent or ill feelings towards you, but I honestly wish I could shake your hand and show you what real strength was all about.
So mav, honest question, no right answer. Who's stronger? the guy who does 400 push ups every other day, the guy who does 1,000 plyo push ups one day a week, the guy who works every day lifting 60- 100 pound concrete slabs, or the guy who works out with machines and weights and gets similar gains visually.
Out of the four who's strongest?
I know you're in killer shape (he is, sorry to say) so I'm looking forward to your 2 cents.

Can you guys please be a little mature, I mean, nobody on here really cares which one of you is stronger. I don't, I just asked a simple question about eating early in the morning before workouts. If you want to know who is stronger why don't you just go wrestle somewhere, I'm not trying to be rude, but please just give it a break. Thanks

I engaged him intellectually with a complex training question that has no answer. I just threw it out there to get an intelligent response. There is no right answer. He accuses me of not lifting weights. Guys like this always try to give me the iron grip....
Don;t pretend like we're both muscle heads, I wan't to shake for intellectual reasons and to test his character, he's always trying to prove himself, assert himself and doubt others, he's an overgripper...
I just wanna shake hands, not wrestle, not fight, not argue. This would show him not only respect, but also the muscles he hasn't used, and everything I speak of in terms of muscle synergy. He would be on the ground in tears "thanking me" for the wisdom...
He's much stronger, he pumps 30 lb weights, I only use 3 pound weights and I hold them, sometimes I turn them, but I don't pump them, so he's muuuuch bigger and stronger...
Albeit slower less health and less powerful. He can lift muuuch more weight, but he can't lift plasma.
Oh yeah, Plasma lives above a weird Jewish Korean bakery, no hearty artisan bread to speak of but a wealth of stuff thats supposed to be high in cholesterol and bad for you. It's uncooked and gives quick clean energy so I say a chocolate croissant or fresh baked pastry is awesome in the morning. Although crusty artisan bread with butter is cheaper and healthier.

Thanks for the suggestion plasma, I will be sure to eat a chocolate croissant with lots of butter tomorrow morning before I go workout at 5:45 a.m.

By the way, how did you come up with the name Plasma?

I know you are just joking around but what a terrible thing to eat at anytime of the day.

I would stick to a simple food. Something with small chance of upsetting your stomach.

Underage? The youngest girl I've been with in recent times was 19. That's a full 3 years over the legal age of consent and 2 years over in my great state of NY. Yes, you have rick in your name so that makes you rick.

Ya, I was being completely sarcastic because plasma was being a little rude suggesting I eat that. I definitely don't eat chocolate croissants with butter. :x

Cam, you might want to try Ultra Fuel by Twinlab. It's 100 grams of carbohydrates and it's a great energy boost. I used to drink it with some BCAA tablets. That's a great energy combination right there.

I think I will just eat a banana and peanut butter or something. Thanks for all the suggestions, I wish you people could just post stuff in a thread without all the bickering, competition, and bad talking. It kinda takes away the fun of it all. Anyways, have a nice day!

A banana may have too much fiber before a tennis workout. I like to do fiber when I'm at home and not before a sporting event. A small bowl of rice with some salmon or even pasta with a little tomato sauce would do just fine. Complex carbs are a great fuel 1 hour before exercise.
