What to expect from PL Evolution as a cross for gut mains versus 4G soft

I don't break strings too often, so I went for the expensive gut/4G soft hybrid. After a little bit of tweaking, I have found the perfect setup and have been enjoying the true qualities of this hybrid for the first time of my life in the last few weeks. I finally understand why gut/poly is often regarded as the best there is.

Now, I don't plan on switching things up, but I have a half-set of gut and half-set of Pro Line Evolution 1.25 (17g) left over. From my understanding, PL Evolution is, like 4G, one of the best poly in terms of tension maintenance. I was wondering if I should expect a similar feel/response from this hybrid compared to 4G soft and also if I should string the Evo at the same tension as 4G soft to have a similar tension once settled. There is also a gauge factor as 4G is 16L compared to 17 for Evo, but I doubt that would make a big difference. Perhaps some might even advise not to bother with PL Evolution in a gut hybrid, please share your thoughts if that's the case. Thanks in advance.

Seeing that they are both round / smooth poly with relatively similar stiffness levels, I'd say use the same tension as 4G Soft. In general, it's not a bad idea to try the exact same set-up you would have with your regular string of choice, if anything at all to see how they compare and adjust from there. Having said that, 4G Soft is pretty tough to beat in my book when used in a hybrid, so if you've found a set-up you really like, you might as well stick with it and focus on other things, like technique and fitness.

Thank you for some good advice; I totally agree with you and I can assure you that I'll stick with the setup I know and like for the main stick. I just happen to have these two leftovers and want to clean up to end the season. I'll buy new shtt next summer :)
Any comments on feel, power, spin and longevity differences I might encounter with this modified cross? I should understand from your post that you haven't actually tried Evolution and you were referring to the test numbers, right?

I haven't tried it, but they are really close in specs, so I wouldn't expect them to play that differently, especially as a cross. The mains make for most of the feel / playing characteristics in a hybrid.

I use PL Evo in hybrids quite a bit. Always as a cross. It’s a little stiff for that first 2 gotta, but softens up nicely after that. The nice thing is it’ll play very well throughout the life of the string as you point out. And it won’t become harsh and give you remote elbow. I haven’t played with 4G soft, so I can’t recommend a tension or compare the two.

I would string the evo in the lower side of you poly tension because it’s not high powered poly and it’s prestretched.

Overall you could really enjoy the setup and the evo is definitely worthy of being paired with gut. Don’t be worried if it feels too stiff in the first two hours.

Thank you, very helpful.
