when hitting a forehand do most of you guys hit with a straight arm at contact or the double bend forehand?
what are the advantages/ disadvantages with each?

Straight arm, as shown by fed, nadal, joker etc, is bigger but you are nore likely to injure yourself doing it wrong.

hi dave,
thanks for your reply,I have been playing around with the double bend windscreen wiper forehand and oh my god it is easy to really rip the ball, it feels like i can almost tear the felt off it. I have some frame by frame footage of federer and novak and from the pics i have they both use the double bend windscreen wiper.
so what is the advantages disadvantages with each?
are you the author of the book tennis mastery? if so where can i get you book in australia?

Wha?
lol I'm not though that would be pretty cool :)

By straight arm, its not totally straight and there is the "double bend", but the arm is straighter out like in this video of fed

or nadal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeXRYb-B3OM

Straight Arm: Apparently, based on how good Fed and Nadals forehand are, it seems they generate more spin and power. Also, I think it was mentioned by somebody on this board that it lets western grippers like Nadal be able to flatten the shot out more easily.

Obviously it looks different and I bet its a lot easier to do it wrong and get some kind of arm problem.

"More apparent" double bend: Since its the textbook way, its more common and you are more likely to do it right. Though Nadal and Fed use straight arm, plenty of players like Joker have great forehands w/ double bend.

Sorry, allow me side track a bit...
Many players rip the balls with windscreen wiper forehand today, I actually tried that, comfortable with that and found that I just stayed behind the baseline waiting for balls to rip. Kinda fun. In actual fact, I lose matches.
It actually "hinder"me from moving forward. I have got so uncomfortable with short and low balls. Then, I did some research and found that classical forehand could be my cure. It is the forward movement, linear swing that will thrust me forward if you understand what I mean.
I am using a semi western grip and try to copy Sampras forehand which I have learned and gave up many years ago. Back then, I was using eastern grip and handicapped with hi bouncing balls.
Am I doing the right thing?
