Medvedev missed a lot of medium-tough difficulty passes so that's out of the question. It was a combination of him being clutch with the big serve and persistent in rallies and Djokovic being mentally shaken and missing extra under pressure. Still took a very mature performance to down him like that.

Zverev basically beating Djoker for him was key. Nole's movement was gone/explosion was gone. . Let see Med do that against a rested Djoker now with the pressure off. Its all about how you follow up those big wins. Look at Thiem. Now the pressure is on Med not to be laying eggs going forward. He had nothing to lose today. Now he will.

Novak hardly had an explosive ROS all day.
I don't want to take anything from Med, who may have even beaten Novak's A game today. But whether it was fatigue or the weight of history, Novak never looked very good today (in part due to Med). Credit to Med for executing well all day.

This definitely was a big part of it. The match with Zverev was extremely physical and Novak looked gassed. But, Med also kept up the consistency he showed all tournament and didn't let the moment get to him. A perfect storm of events, but in the end, all that matters is he is a US Open champ.

Unpredictability on serve and essentially being able to out-Djokovic Djokovic, which is why he won the majority of long rallies. Medvedev is by far the most intelligent player out there. He varies angles and ball speed, and constantly makes little adjustments to his game on the fly. That's not something casual fans in the stands would notice however.

I'm rewatching it right now to see if I can see. What I'm seeing so far is that it shouldn't have been even that close. Medvedev should have gone up a double break to start the first.

Serve is the only right answer. He was not impressive at all on return in the first set and breaking Novak came from the latter's poor nervous play. But he held so confidently and got himself out of trouble easily, putting out the comeback fire Djokovic tried to lit. If it weren't for the great serving performance from the very beginning, the match could be very different, I think.

Novak also looks not only understandably nervous but also tired. Again, that's understandable, but I think that trip to Tokyo may have caught up to him.

Sure, because in this case you are not trying to predict anything, just analyze what happened. Now if you took the next step and attempted to use that analysis to prove they 2021 Med would beat X player from the past, then the analytical process falls apart.

Med's serving which was pretty unreadable for a few patches throughout the match.
Pretty intelligent in the rallies, buckled down and played up the middle often, which made Novak feel like he needed to do more (resulted in fatigued errors). Moved extremely well.
Novak being off his own game, also couldn't win an important point to save his life.

It's merely an analysis of levels and penciling the better level to beat the lower level as it happens most of the time. Plenty of X players Medvedev wouldn't beat since they played at a higher level, of course.

I agree with this in general but when one tries to compare across time it becomes impossible. it’s likely that if AO21 Novak had showed up today the match could have been different. But can we say with any certainty who would have won? Impossible.
and it becomes even more far fetched when we start imagining players birth dates changing so they all have the same age. There are all kinds of ripple effects there.

But even if I agree (and I tend to) I don’t think you can use that to say AO Novak would definitely beat USO Med.

Of course he would, there's a gap which there is no way to bridge. Wouldn't be the sad beatdown it was if Med keeps his cool like today though. Got way too tilted in the AO final even as the match was still close around 7-5 1-1.

The key thing. Conditions are way faster in day.
But he was tired. Has to be. A 34 year old after a gruelling 5 setter has to be tired. Here the luck of the draw was against him. Had zverev been on other side he only have to beat 1 instead of beating zverev and Medvedev back to back.
In FO, had he got Nadal at day match i.e at final he loses. But he got at semis and that too became night match from 3rd set onwards.
Wimbledon was a joke. Everyone stacked on opposite sides of the draw. Finally hisnluck has to gove in

He hit maybe one BHDTL that was close or on the chalk. The FHDTL wasn't any better.
On the backhand, his hard strikes were a 70 cm inside the line and usually tailing back to the center.
Against The Octopus that's not going to do the job. He was so safe, I don't think he'd beaten a Goffin, RBA or Diego today.
Bad coaching? Fatigue? Brain cramps?
I dunno, but for me that problem was the backbone of his defeat.

OK, watching this again the key game was the fourth game in the second. That's the one with the weird music let. Novak got two break points in that game, one after the music. He then smashed a racquet and Med held. That's where you can see that this was not going to follow the pattern of all the other matches that Novak lost the first set in this tournament.
And then he broke him in the next game to take the lead in the second set. Those two games were the match.
