What was the last movie you watched?

I tuned out of current western movies for the same reason most of the world seems to have (the grotesque ideology they promote)... but love 1920s silent films, mid-century European cinema & most of all... 1980s American cheese!!!

Just watched To Live and Die in LA (1985)

Favorite movie ever is Metropolis (1927)

I just caught the last 3/4 of The Brain That Wouldn't Die on the Elvira program
and found it kind of interesting. The wife of a mad-scientist doctor is fatally
injured in a car crash but the husband keeps the head alive in a big petri dish
while he looks for a replacement body. Some of the scenes were surprisingly well
composed and some of the action and effects unfortunately cheap and silly.
Still, I would say it was worth seeing. The ending was also a let down, I would
have preferred the wife to get a new body, come back and kill the evil husband,
then find someone better with a different head and a different body.

I have started watching Bugonia (2025). The genre is sci-fi comedy but it’s more serious than that.

Also, One Battle After Another (2025). Some say it’s overrated. I guess I will find out.

Emma Stone, my beloved.
You know they dated for a while, right? During and after the Amazing Spider Man. They were a good couple because I liked Andrew Garfield.

Yeah, I knew that. I was a Tobey kid so I was a bit hesitant with Andrew’s Spider Man at first. Grew to really like it. Still not a fan of Holland’s Spider Man though. lol

I was into Tobey but I liked Andrew too. A lot of people are having trouble with Tom Holland, but I really like him. He’s such a down to earth type of guy.

Yeah, he seems like a really nice guy. I just don’t like him as Spidey. Just personal preference.

I have another favourite, Elizabeth Olsen. She’s in the Avengers movies, Endgame snd Infinity War, I think but I like her for her other movies/shows. Just as good actress as Emma Stone if not more. @NachoGPT

U Turn (1997) Rewatch, seen it loads of times over the years. Kind of like After Hours in the sunshine, a man gets trapped in a small town when his car breaks down and just wants to get the hell out of town but thing after thing goes wrong. Hilarious performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Billy Bob Thornton, a lot of fun

I watched Days of Thunder last week because it was on my YouTube autoplay. I think it was the first time I've watched it, although I might have watched it when I was a kid. Anyway, good stuff. Nice and simple plot.

Rest in Peace, Robert Duvall.

Watched quite a few movies the last couple of weeks. My favorites:

Never Look Away

Really excellent film. Writer-director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck also made The Lives of Others, which is one of my favorite films of the last 20 years. I slightly prefer Never Look Away. It’s over three hours, but held my attention throughout. Nominated for best foreign language film and best cinematography awards at the 2019 Oscars. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel has had a long Hollywood career with many Oscar nominations.

Goodbye, Dragon Inn

I really like this slow, haunting, melancholy film set in a Taipei movie theater on the rainy last day before closing. Long static shots, almost no dialogue, and absence of traditional plot probably makes this a difficult watch for most people, especially in the smartphone era, but the atmosphere and dreamlike mood drew me in and made it memorable.

Toxic

Excellent dark comedy dealing with the absurdity of local teenagers being sold the idea that modeling is a way out of a small Lithuanian town with few opportunities. Brilliantly absurd, bleakly comical, and rather depressing. Sadly, this is a dynamic too common in some East European cities. Jean-Luc Brunel and his more notorious criminal co-conspirator are not alone in using the lure of modeling for nefarious purposes.

Sick of Myself

Somewhat dark and horrifying, but more of a comedy and satire about narcissism, obsession with getting attention, and using victimhood to gain affirmation and status. Juxtaposing this sociopathic character with the polite Oslo society makes the film work for me.

Sentimental Value

Another Norwegian film and up for many Oscars. I preferred Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, but thought this was really well done as well. Very Bergmanesque and an actors film, but it just didn’t capture me. Great acting and everything was well done, but I felt it was trying to pull emotions without earning it with the narrative. Trier’s intentional blurring of lines between real life and theater contributed to my emotional distance. Still a really good film in my opinion, just not as good as some of Trier’s previous works.

No (big) review. Just a quick trip down memory lane:

And... I told you so....

See for yourself:

In fact it's unlikely Tod Browning's whole opening castle sequence has ever been surpassed in the history of cinematic horror:

No need to spell out the overbearing sense of dread or sexual tension. Jonathan Demme was a fine director, but Browning for all his faults was a true master.

Afraid my movie watching has fallen off the cliff, but I'll try to catch up on the Oscar nominees and highlight some worthy ones.
Have you caught up on nominees?

Project Hail Mary. 5/10. Book is one of my favorites 10/10 but trailer spoiled everything and thru changed and omitted several awesome parts.
Oh, that’s a shame though I skipped the trailer and didn’t read the book, so there maybe some hope for me yet. I am planning to see it next week.
