What was the last movie you watched?

La Piscine, great french movie from 1969. Watched it for the second time after 20 years, but was somehow forgotten how fascinating it was. Very atmospheric.

The Man from Earth, directed by Jerome Bixby.

Fascinating. Highly recommended.
The title reminds me of the 1976 movie,The Man Who Fell To Earth.
David Bowie plays Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien who comes to earth to save his planet that has run out of water.

Prometheus.

I didn't find characters compelling and the story left out far too much information.

Seriously the co-pilots suicide themselves when there was no reason to do so..

5/10 if only for special effects.

"The Man from The Earth" iirc, yes, saw it last month and loved it.

I did not get how he can change his name and start afresh every ten years and still get a job as a professor in top univs. What about background checks ?

ollinger

G.O.A.T.
The Butler

Castor oil for white people, a docu-drama about intergenerational tension in a black family during the civil rights movement. Certainly not an entertainment, seems more designed to shame the oppressive majority -- and at this it succeeds.

Hmmm, did you see a translated version? I can imagine how something translated verbatim from Spanish, French or Italian would include the extra "the". E.g., El Hombre de La Tierra.

The English original was just what I said: The Man from Earth. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/)

Perhaps he is not a native speaker and his grammar is not that good :) Normally, the article "the" is not used for specific name like "Earth". It is similar to saying incorrectly that "I went to the India and got sick by eating food from a street vendor".

Actually, that was what the title said. I did not add the "the", but it did seem odd, and I thought there might be some nuance like "from the earth". The title was capitalized so it was not clear whether it meant Earth or earth. Anyway, silly of me to nitpick :)

I did not know it was translated, was it ?

edit: Yes, it is The Man from Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_from_Earth), seems my torrent had it wrong. Yup, YIFY's torrent creates a directory with "the". But the movie doesn't have "the". Darn, so much fuss over a "the".

Where have you been, dude ?

Someone recommended Gravity to me. How is it, worth going to the cinema and paying an extravagant amount ?
Been busy with jobs Senti and hopefully taking off to Manchester and Scotland in a couple of months for a long overdue vacation:)

Senti! Go watch Gravity! it is the definition of perfection when it comes to film-making. It's breathtaking and mind-blowing pretty much on every level. It is an experience that should be experienced no matter what. It doesn't matter if you are into films or not, what matters is the experience of film.

I'm working on my review on it, should be up in 5 days or so. A bit busy atm.

WARNING - Gravity spoiler

Saw Gravity, pretty good. But i do have a question (WARNING - spoiler alert)

so why exactly Clooney character needs to be detached from Bullock character while they are hovering near the Russian satellite after the crash? I mean it makes no sense from physics perspective.....

due to more weight will exert more momentum and they will have harder time maneuvering in space. Small amount of internal gas could push them into earth's atmosphere

Probably better to level-set the expectations for Gravity.

IMHO:

1) The film is an extremely high quality visual achievement. It'll knock your eyes out. There's one scene with our galaxy (the Milky Way) as the backdrop, and I was almost moved to tears for a brief moment, it was so beautiful.

2) While I am very much in the camp of those who also found the story and delivery to be excellent and fantastically compelling, this is of course subjective and someone else might be bored out of their skulls.

Does anyone remember this pic, I am trying to find the name so i can download it ... I saw it a few years back on telly.

Some tourists or diplomats are taken hostage in the far east (i suppose Vietnam/ Cambodia or even Burma). They are taken deep into the jungles in the mountains.
One of them is a runner, they show scenes of him going for his daily run before the kidnap.

He escapes by running down the stream bed, which is dry. The militia or whatever are chasing him and he keeps running.

I've google a lot for several months and come up with loads of running movies but not this one. Last night I saw Rescue Dawn but it's not the one i am looking for.

My expectations for Gravity were high based on the reviews. It was just ok. Visually very cool, but not much of a story and the movie just repeated itself over and over (Spoiler: get in trouble, travel to a "lifeboat", have trouble hanging on to said lifeboat, spend two minutes frantically trying to grab hold, finally latching on at the last possible moment. Rinse and repeat). Boring in spots, very little story, very little character development, cool 3D. I wish we had seen Rush instead.

Saw some interesting old movies with Dad recently.

The Devil and Daniel Webster - a man sells his soul to the devil for seven years of prosperity. About human values, very nice. Good acting by the devil and Daniel.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir - I loved the scenery. I was about to say it was probably shot in Cornwall, but wikipedia said it was shot entirely in California. Won Academy Award for cinematography in 1947. Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. George Sanders too.

Judgement at Nuremburg - 3 hour movie about the trial of judges. Marlene Deitrich. Very interesting.

Exactly how I felt about it. People were acting like it was the best movie of the year or something. It was worth seeing 1 time with good popcorn and that's it.

Just worked my way through oceans 11, 12, and 13. One of the few trilogies that I would say never dropped the ball. Some were better, but they all have great dry humor with a cast that works really well together. They did a good job tying the plot through all three of them as well. Great movies.

Just saw 'Gravity'. Visually/technically it was very well presented. As far as the story-line goes, however,-- it was simple-minded (at best) and, in general, stupid and impossible.

Why in the world did you see that?

I wouldn't be surprised if 95% of the film was shot behind a blue screen.

I hope you laughed out loud throughout the film. The animations looked ridiculous in the trailer.

And so what if it was? If it was enjoyable then it was enjoyable, does it matter how it was made?

Does that mean Pixar movies don't deserve their praises?

These types of films I would like to call 'gimmick films'. The basic concept to sell their product is to heavily depend on tech. I don't usually watch these types of films because I know that they are in a big blue or green room floating around in a wire. If the audience already knows that the environment is obviously artificial and controlled, it disinterests them. C'mon Angus, remember the Star Wars prequels?

I don't know why they casted Bullock and Clooney in it, but these films don't work. Unless if you have absolutely no expectations, then it'll probably be enjoyable for you.

But I forgot, the product is aimed towards the 'general audience'.

Eh, I kind of don't want to get into a debate about movies because I don't go to the movies or watch any at home anymore. The last film I saw in theaters was Avatar in 2009. My opinions are pretty cynical.

So you're telling me story telling has nothing to do with Pixar's success? And they're just gimmick films?

I didn't mention anything about Pixar. I saw some of their animated films from the early 2000's, and they were OK. They started to go downhill after Cars 2 was released.

I don't really care for Disney/Pixar films, so you're asking the wrong person.

I was using Pixar as an example since it falls into your categorization of "gimmick films".

I don't care how the movie was made. 300 proudly admitted the entire movie was blue screen. I didn't care how it was made, I just know I enjoyed it.

Wrong.

First of all, I didn't mention Pixar. You basically assumed that I was, but I didn't.

Ha, the movie was obviously on blue screen!

Sure, the film worked because of the overall style. One of Zack Snyder's better films.
