Saw Girl a Belgian film about an adolescent girl at a competitive ballet school. She happens to be transgender and the film explores the complexities and challenges she faces. It is very well acted by the protagonist (a boy in real life).

However I thought the relationship dynamic with her father did not quite work nor was I convinced by the narrative and storyline.

Forgot to post a few.

American Assassin. Bleh. Could've been so much better. More like American operative. Sorry but an assassin is something entirely different.

Deadpool 2. Loved it. So much fun.

Skyscraper. It was enjoyable. Got right to the point. No beating around the bush with who's good who's bad stuff. No dragging it out while we wonder if the good guy knows so and so is a bad guy.

Captain Marvel. It was fun. Wife enjoyed it as well and she normally doesn't watch these kinds of movies.

Looking forward to seeing 'Us' this weekend with the wife. Looks like a lot of fun.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) - watching again after a few years.

Ellen Burstyn*, Diane Ladd**, Jodie Foster (very young). Harvey Keitel

* Academy Award for Best Actress.
** Mother of Laura Dern

Watched "Sophie and the Rising Sun" a few days back. Interracial love during the time of the Pearl Harbour attack. Then started "Pearl Harbour" but not finished it. Reminds me of "Tora Tora Tora" long ago when i wa a kid.

I watched this gem of a Turkish movie called Winter Sleep"

Exquisite cinematography and at 3.5 hours long, it can feel tedious but I haven't seen such sensitive portrayal of humanity on screen for a long long time.

Watched it in 2015. Very nice.

just fished out the posts.

I am in the middle of Winter Sleep, an interesting Turkish film set in some stunning remote mountain village in Anatolia. It's 3 hours and 15 minutes long.
Finished Winter Sleep. Interesting film, a lot of dialogue so YMMV. Made by the same director who did "Once upon a time in Anatolia". Based on Chekhov's The Wife.

Saw a couple. Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. Eh. Typical dinosaur stuff. Nothing ground breaking or anything we haven't seen before. Would skip it.

Saw 'Us' as well with the wife. She was freaked out by it, but I wasn't and I was hoping I would be, but I think I've watched too many movies in my life and just know too well when things are going to happen and how. Personally I think she just likes to try and break my arm or draw blood with digging her nails into me. Interesting movie, but this whole thing about double meanings in there, easter eggs and stuff and needing to watch it again, no thanks. I watch movies to escape, not to be taught lessons about how we are as a society. I can see how society is by logging into Facebook or going to a forum to see how people interact. Looking forward to seeing the Pet Semetary re-make this weekend.

Thanks. How do people come up with such abbreviations? I only learnt tldr last week!

I have no idea. It's constantly changing as well as language seems to evolve over text. Trying to explain to my 7 year old what certain things mean and by the time he's a teen those things will probably mean something else. I read somewhere that if you end a sentence in a text with a period, yes a period it means you're angry. Whaaaa????

Thor: Ragnarok

Only saw it once in the theatres, so it was a fun watch the second time around. I really need to make it out to see Captain Marvel before I go see End Game.

Lmao, tldr has been around since like the mid 2000's. YMMV is fairly new though, that's for sure. Occasionally I will find myself having to google some abbreviations, but for the most part, I can either figure them out, or I've already seen them used before.

YMMV has been around since the late 90's for sure. I knew a guy where I worked at the time who would use that on message boards.

Just saw Ex Machina last night. Awesome special effects. Twists, but wife and I could figure stuff out. Makes me think AI is just stupid. I think everyone wants a Jarvis for AI, but in the end we'll get this kind of stuff or terminators. Never turns how how we want.

Paddington 1 & 2. Charming and droll films for people of all ages, stacked with excellent British actors and an amiable animated bear. Not the most daring pieces of filmmaking, but heartwarming and clever enough to provide a pleasant ride.

Shazam(2019) - Although this superhero flick did not have big names, it was pretty good from start to finish with lighthearted humor but with darker music. I would rate this as No.2 among the DCEU Franchise after Wonder Woman. It looks like they are getting better with their movies lately. No wonder it has 90% RT score from both critics and audiences alike.

Ralph Fiennes stars and directs in this biopic about ballet dancer Nureyev's defection to the West.

I thought it was a bit disjointed as the film jots about over three different periods in Nureyev’s life.

Still, it gave you a sense of the great man and more interestingly (for me) conveyed the creepy atmosphere prevalent in the Soviet Union under Khrushchev.

Sayonara (1957) -
US Navy men fall in love with Japanese women but face a lot of resistance.
Marlon Brando, James Garner.

A bit too long, and I personally didn't think Brando fit the role. He talked as though he had marbles in his mouth, but i just read that that southern accent was deliberate.

Watched Back Roads (1981) a few days back. Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. Nice.
Battlecreek (2017) - worth missing. Rather poor end.
Oscar and Lucinda (Ralph Fiennes, Cate Blanchett, Ciaron Hinds).

I saw this movie and was not happy with the ending! Got me very upset!

Head in the Clouds (2004)
Description: “From the roaring 1920s to the ruinous Spanish Civil War and Adolf Hitler's rise into power, the lives of an Irish schoolteacher, a provocative heiress and her Spanish muse are intricately interlaced, sharing the same destiny and passion.”

Details:

“On a rainy night in 1933, the young, rebellious and provocative heiress of a French champagne magnate, Gilda Bessé, storms into the quiet life of the timid Oxford undergraduate, Guy Malyon, taking him by surprise. And before he knows it, Guy is love-smitten, and taken in the Parisian apartment of the now famous photographer, Gilda, living under the same roof with her muse and Spanish political idealist, Mia. However, as Spain gradually succumbs to the Nationalists, Mia and Guy's commitment to the cause of the Spanish Republic will threaten to break up their bohemian and almost idyllic coexistence. In the end, as Adolf Hitler rises into power, can a war-torn Europe separate the three companions forever? Written by Nick Riganas

Stars: Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz, Stuart Townsend.

Shazam. So enjoyable. Not for little kids though. I have a 7 yo and there's stuff in there that he'd cover his eyes over. It's a bummer since he really wanted to see it, but no point in watching a movie when you have to cover your eyes for certain parts.

Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson.

So-so movie about bored housewife who runs away from her hubby.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073634/

Amazon:

A sly, sophisticated love story that is a showcase for its two Oscar-winning stars: Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. With a sparklingly witty screenplay from Academy Award-winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love), and directed by Joseph Losey, The Romantic Englishwoman is a wildly entertaining ride.
