great pointHere’s some background heading into that 2004 USO final:
Hewitt was riding a massive 16 match hard court winning streak entering that final. He only lost 2 sets during that streak and he reached the USO Final that year without dropping a set during that entire tourney. Hewitt was in tremendous form.
Federer had two great streaks of his own entering that tourney.
1. Fed had 16 straight wins vs the top 10, a record back then. He would later extend this record to a mind-boggling 24 straight.
2. Fed had won 12 consecutive finals matches. Fed would later run this streak to 24 straight, which shattered Laver’s 19 straight.
The fact that Federer dished out 2 bagels to a player of this caliber scared everybody.
2004 marked the first time that anybody won 3 slams + the WTF in the same season. To this day, only Federer(2004, 2006, 2007) and Djokovic(2015) have pulled off this feat.
