What will federer's game look like in the future?

One of the characteristics of Federer that Wilander praised since the beginning is his ability to adapt and change his game to his opponent. One has to admit that Federer today is not the same as four or five years ago, and he is still winning.

In your opinion, what direction is Federer's game evolving into?

This article mentions that he improved his second serve.

Federer still believe he can still improve.

Henman thinks that he will be a even better player.

This guy thinks Federer needs to improve his volley; I've heard this several times by MacEnroe (both), Cahill, Gilbert, and others.

What do you think? Thanks so much for your thoughts

Variety is even greater, consistency is a lot less. I think he'll be more and more like a Santoro you know.. finding ways to win a point in unorthodox ways. Ofg course he has a better serve than Santoro, and better strokes as well, but he'll need to come in more and more, play more dropshots, have those mini-game rallies at the net. Chip and charge on second serves, serve and volley on the second serve, because his baseline game will get less reliable (although it seems better than last year, and looks better than his serve does tbh)

I agree. Actually its not really the volley itself only. Its his transition game. he sort of stays half-court, and isnt going to really CHARGE the net you know.. He always comes in so casual, and he should win those extra centimeters or meters you know.. get closer on the net to have easier volleys. Also his approaches sometimes just arent good enough. The volley itself is maybe less of a concern, although I think volleying really deep to the baseline needs to improve if hes gonna play lots of S&V

I heard (from Mats.W I think) that he plans to do more serve/volley to end points quickly to reduce impact ..versus baseline grinding!

This kind of surprised me.. I thought serve & volley is harder on your body.. knees..

no thats why Sampras lasted so long with ever getting seriously injured. With serve and volley there are about 2-4 hits before the point ends.

His game will look like this in about 40 years:
