What would happen if ...?

The spate of metatarsel injuries leading up to the world cup and ankle incidents with Hewitt and Roddick got me thinking. Let's say for argument's sake that Fed and Nadal have battled it through to the final @ RG and it's one set all, both taking their respective sets 6-4 and it's 3-3 in the third going with serve. Then suddenly Fed turns his ankle and can just stay on court but only enough to serve and bunny hop across to something not too far away. Couple of points later he drop shots Nadal who scampers into the net to win the point and also turns his ankle so that he too is physically pretty badly off. Both players have won the same number of points, but neither is in any condition to try to finish the match .... who wins RG? It might happen ....

I...don't know. I'm sure they would reschedule the match. Most likely Federer would have retired after the ankle injury. He wouldn't risk seriously injuring himself.

This situation would only make sense if they both rolled their ankles on the same point. Then I guess it's up to who can last the longest, or who can play best on one leg.

Yep, they continue playing until one retires or the match is completed.

Btw with fed on one leg i dont think nadal is going to bust his ass over one shot, or vice versa.

Ya, thats why its more probable for it to happen on the same point, since Nadal might not know that Federer is injured. e.g. Federer goes down while hitting an amazing shot and Nadal has to chase it down. Nadal rolls his ankle while chasing the ball down.

Now they're both screwed cause I'm sure they are desperate for the title. And then we get to watch the best two in the world play on one leg; hopefully their left leg to make it more difficult.

First to retire loses or it goes on til the match is completed. The scoreboard doesnt care why or how, just who.

Id have to give it to fed if they played, he can at least serve and volley some.

You guys are very anxious to wait for French Open..... :)

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if both of them get
some type of injuries that side-line them this year.

They both will often get into finals of many tornaments and
they are beating up each other pretty badly whenever they
meet each other....

its an interesting q, but in all honesty this would never ever happen. pretty much everyone wud hold serve every time cuz neither could run to the returns. in that case i give the advantage to nadal cuz hes the better returner.

What happens if both players refuse to retire, but cannot keep playing? I suppose whoever got injured first would lose because the time penalty would be in affect for them first. This would be extremely interesting to see, but not with Federer and Nadal.

Jings, I couldn't help but smile at that fantastic yet plausible scenario; I think they should "share" the title in this case, and both names should be etched on the trophy. Alternatively, they could call the losing semi-fnalists out to Phillipe Chatrier (if they have not flown out of Paris that is) to continue the final (at exactly the same pont that Nadal gets injured) and the winner of that encounter will be the the overall winner; unless of course they too turned their ankles, but that's another story..... :)

What if they both eat the same tainted meal for breakfast and get violent stomach aches? In any case, whoever retires first loses.
