What would you do with extra stuff in your order that you didn't order?

I ordered four running tanks online (not from TW) and they shipped me two packages: one with the four running shirts and the other with two other shirts completely unrelated to my order. They were worth about $80. I checked my account and they didn't charge me for them so it looks like they generated two shipping labels (the labels were identical) and shipped me an order that was probably for someone else.

I think that the laws are written so that you are under no obligation to return or pay for something that gets sent to you that you didn't order.

So what would you do in this case?

I called them up and they're going to send me a return label to return the stuff and they'll send me a discount coupon for a future order. Of the two items, one is really nice ($60 running shirt) and the other ($20 running shirt) isn't something that I'd buy. I won't spend more than $10 for a running shirt though so I wouldn't buy either of these unless there was a really good sale.
 
Be an honest person. Pay your debts, and return anything which isn't yours. Unless you are so poor you can't afford to.

BTW, if a bank gives you money by mistake, they have the right to ask for it back. The same principle probably applies here.

Now, is illegal downloading of a movie or streaming of a tennis match theft? That's a different story. ;)

They will send me a prepaid shipping label so there's no cost to me other than putting the label on and bringing it to the shipping room.

If a bank gives you money by mistake, they'll probably just take it right out of your account. I don't think that I've ever had that problem before though. It's usually a problem where they didn't credit you for something.

Is streaming a tennis match theft? I hereby give anyone permission to download or stream my tennis matches.

I'm getting ready to stream Indian Wells off my ESPN-3 feed.

Some guy got a $250,000 deposit in his bank account by mistake. Instead of returning it, he lived it up for the next few months, and when the bank realized they asked for all of it back (which the guy couldn't do because he is broke). I believe this is fairly recent too, and I think he ended up in jail for theft.

Different laws for banks compared to retailers because the banks have more and better lobbyists and lawyers.

Or they try to charge you a late fee when you actually sent the payment in before the late date. Or they penalize you for paying something off early...
 
This appears to have been a problem with automation gone bad. The printer prints labels, they get applied to the bags and the bags go out. So I got my order and the next guys. The guy that I got the order for got the next guys order, etc. So their shipping department is going to be busy and people will have to wait an extra week or two to get their stuff. They had a 50% off sale last week so I'd guess lots of people bought stuff.

I think that supply chains, margins and logistics are a lot different today. Competition means lower margins and the cost to return something looks like it's dropped as they can email shipping labels and the shipping packages are designed to do returns as well. Leaner inventory also means that they may well need the item that they shipped to you to fulfill the next order that was already processed.
 
If in doubt, I'd ask and follow instructions, as long as it didn't cost me anything more than a trip to the post office.

I don't even think I've asked about small stuff like baseball caps and t-shirts that just seemed like promotional items. Stuff valued at under $10 I prolly wouldn't worry about, as it would cost most companies more to figure it out and prepare for return shipping than it is worth. I think I have a $5 knife sharpener that I didn't order or pay for. I've used it a lot and it has been a favorite. Since it says "Gander Mountain" on the side, I figured it was a promo item. I think I ended up with a nice ball cap the same way.
 
Last weekend after some intense tennis volunteering, I decided to have dinner at P.F. Changs. I ordered one appetizer and one entree. The two arrived together. But the entree was different from what I had ordered. I was confused and told them that it was probably the wrong one. They said no, I had been given the extra entree for free since the kitchen had made it and they would have to give it to someone within a certain time if it was the wrong one for another guest! Then the entree I had ordered also showed up!

What if it was a senior citizen with Alzheimer's or simply an older person with fading memory?

I don't check what my employer deposits through payroll into my bank account every month. What if they had been depositing more than the correct amount? Would I have to pay it back?

Standard practice would be to take it out of your next paycheck or to take it out of a series of paychecks if the amount was large.

It would be a complicated mess for the employer (though maybe ADP can handle this sort of case more easily). They would have to unwind withholdings taxes to the US Treasury and State DoR, unwind ESPP contributions, 401k/403b contributions and anything else keyed off of salary.
 
Most extra items I get beside what I ordered were promo items. I haven't got any valuable one. No reason to return. just enjoy.

The staff must have recognized you and felt you looked peaked and a bit wan from your volunteer work so they "mistakenly" prepared the extra food . The only one happy is the plumber on speed dial after your Chang's visits but the manager is p1ssed at staff for the required repair to stall #2 in the men's room.:p:D

Naturally, you ate it all!

Good move. I haven't been to PFC in a long time (only went there once) but I took a peek at the calorie counts of their entrees and appetizers and many of their entrees would be lunch and dinner for me. Sometimes it would be more than my caloric intake for a day.

IIRC, in English law, if your employer overpaid paid your salary by accident and you say nothing knowingly, it's still considered theft.

Yeah a lot of times if the item isn't worth too much they might just be okay with that. I can say it's happened a couple times to me, but I don't really feel bad about it. Although one of the time it was pretty legitimate, because apparently what I ordered was delivered to the wrong address, and so they sent out a replacement shipment to make up for it, and I guess the guy who received the package was honest, because I found it outside my door like a day or two later and then I got the replacement shipment a couple days after that. I just ended up keeping both, because I was like well, it's more trouble than it's worth to send one back, and what I ordered wasn't overly expensive, just some kitchen utensils and body wash.

Yeah, this happened to me at Taco Bell 3 months ago or so. I ordered 2 burritos, and I ended up with 4 burritos. I'm talking the burritos that almost weight a pound each. I told them of the mistake, but they told me to keep them.

A couple of days later my toilet wasn't happy. ;)

This guy blew like $100,000 in a couple of months. Bought a sports car, took a vacation to Vegas, etc. Not an old guy or an Alzheimer's patient.

If something like that happened, I'm sure there would be attenuating circumstances.

It is. I am very guilty of that :(.
But there are some upsides, too. Many movies would simply not get seen if there were no free torrents. At least that's how I think. Frankly a bum like me is not going to buy movies. And I certainly aint going to the theatre to watch some blockbuster.
So either I watch a torrent, or I don't, there's no option where I actually pay, unless I had a donate option for the director/movie house which I might do only if i liked the movie.

Tennis matches: Often some matches are NOT telecast in your country. Either the event (e.g. Halle) is not telecast at all, or in the case of the majors, they only show the show courts and you want to see some other court. There is no way I am avoiding paying by seeing something that is not available for purchase. There is no way i can pay to watch that match live, other than some illegal livestream. So not sure if I am wrong here, and how I can right it.

Yes, I agree completely with you both in your justification and, yet, your uneasiness about the whole thing.

For example, let's say you steal a car. That has an intrinsic material value, and by you taking that car, you prevent somebody from actually buying the car. In other words, there is a net loss (regardless of whether you would buy the car as an alternatively to stealing it or not).

With streams, if you were not to buy a movie, the end result for the director/producers/etc would be the same whether you simply don't watch it, or whether you watch it via an illegal stream. As a matter of fact, I believe studies have been made that showed that piracy actually increased business in many cases, as some movie (or some other material) gained a much bigger exposure, and many people who downloaded illegally "to try" finally ended up buying the movie if they really liked it.

Am I a dirty rotten scoundrel? Let's ask Sureshs... ;)

I only fast 2 weeks at a time (but next one will be a full month if I can take it). The 3 month timeline was approximate. I do remember it was 4 friggin burritos. I don't know how I finished them, but by golly I'm not throwing away free Mexican food!

I ordered two Rafa hats from Nike once and two packs of three came instead.

My lucky day I thought and gave the extra hats to god children friends etc.

I had absolutely no guilt whatsoever and felt no moral imperative to send back a few hats, which costs them a buck or two to make, to a faceless and highly profitable corporation.

Nor on the other hand am I too upset about the fact that I am in effect subsidising Rusty and Sentinel's viewing habits. Though you guys should feel guilty enough to take me out to dinner should we ever meet;)
