Whats the best match you have ever watched

First Delano vs. Morton Match - 1957. I was the chair. It was exciting, I had never chaired before, the game was new and fresh to me, the players were my friends, and we didn't need any "groanies" (grown ups) around. I forget who won, it didn't matter much. We then rode our bikes to get some Kool-Aid and made up a big pitcher.

Yesterday was one of the better matches I have seen in terms of a comeback. I watched alot of Becker/Sampras/Agassi/ etc. when I was younger with my parents, but don't really remember much about the matches. But I was raised watching Wimbledon.

The best match was Dennis Ralston vs. John Newcombe which was the final of Helsinki Open in 1965 or 1966. I am not sure (no wonder!) but I think that Newcombe was little better in that match.

Best match I have ever watched LIVE was at the US OPEN, Guga vs Mirnyi....maybe 2001....scoreline was crazy. I just found the scoreline Mirnyi won the first two sets 7-6(5) and 7-5 then Guga came back 6-7(4), 6-7(3) and 2-6. We left Arthur Ashe around 1:30 am, according to Guga he was so hype after the match that he rode a stationary bike until 3:00 am before he went back to the Hotel. how about that.

Three matches:

'80 Wimby final - Borg/Mac

'84 Davis Cup- Us/Sweden - Mac Wilander in an epic 6 hr. marathon.

'84 Wimby final - Mac/Connors

*** Yesterday wasn't too bad as far as a comeback is concerned!

The best match was played in the year 1876. Unfortunately, I didn't watch it, don't remember who won and don't remember even names of the players.

Sampras def Arazi at the '98 Australian was a pretty amazing standard of tennis. Remarkable shotmaking & rallies from both players. Sampras won in straight sets, but the score doesn't show how close it really was. Arazi was teeing off on everything.

The whole US Open 1991. Connor's matches and then the Seles/Capriati thrillah as well as Steffi/Navratilova match. All great.

Stich - Pioline at Wimbledon was beautiful tennis, as was Arazi - Rios (can't remember the tournament though).

In recent times I'd nominate Hewitt's comeback over Federer at the Davis Cup semis a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe Federer could play such tennis and he still lost.

Best in my memory would be Cash-Lendl at the 1984 US Open - that was tense. Or Lendl - Muster at the Oz Open in the mid 90's, just because I had a morbid curiosity to see if Lendl was going to hang on long enough to win or if he'd drop dead from heat exhaustion.

sampras/agassi 2001 QF. Sampras wins 6-7 7-6 7-6 7-6.... agassi just couldnt do anything with pete's serve, ace after ace. Sampras kept the points so short it was just pathetic, and i mean that in a good way.

I completely agree with Cobra Tennis. The Sampras-Agassi quaterfinal at the US Open, settled over 4 tie-breaks, is the best quality tennis I have ever seen.

Ferrero vs Zib

First round meaningless match to anyone but for the two guys playing. I started watching this match because Roddick was putting me asleep in centre court with his one dimentional game.
That night Ferrero and Tomas Zib made the sickest shots I've ever seen.
and I'd like to say... any Arnaud Clement match is a blast too, I've seen that short man twice at the open and is a real fighter, I wonder what a match with Hewitt would be like.

I know many of you guys don't like womens' tennis, but the best match I've seen (mens or womens) happens to be a women's match and it was the 1992 French Open final between Graf and Seles, with Seles winning 10-8 in the third.

The 2 men's matches on SuperSaturday 1984:
Lendl d. Cash
McEnroe d. Connors

1980 Wimbledon Final

Lendl d. McEnroe 1984 Fr. Open

Noah d. Wilander 1983 Fr. final

Sampras d. Agassi 1999 Wimbledon Final(the match wasn't exciting in the conventional see-saw sense but exciting in that one player so totally dominated from halfway through the first set.)

Lendl d. Wilander 1987 US Open(this is the one where Dan Blather stormed off)

I knew it was on clay - just forgot which event. I never saw the Sampras-Arazi match though.

Gotta second Prince's Rafter -Agassi semi as well. That was classic stuff.

connors-laver, $500,000 winner-take-all challenge match in las vegas.

2nd match in the series billed "heavyweight championship of tennis" jimmy at his badboy baddest against the legend. took place at ceasars palace on primetime tv, with howard cosell commentating. jimmy wins in 5 sets against surprisingly tough 36 year old rod laver.

1980 Wimbledon final Borg Mac, the 16-18 tb was historic !
Wish I could have seen the 1969 Pancho Gonzalez and Charlie Pasarelli played a record 112-game singles match on Wimbledon's centre court, lasting 5 hours 12 minutes :(
As for recent matches, the Safin win over Federer in this years 2005 AO was awesome

So far, the best match I've ever seen was a set and a half of Santoro/Llodra against Bryan/Bryan, semifinals of the French Open. 'twas brilliant stuff.

Then again, I have yet to watch that Rafter-Ivanisevic final which I recently got on tape but don't have time to watch yet...

men's matches that I'll never forget:
Sampras vs Corretja US Open (first round I think) I forget what year, the one where Sampras threw up!
Sampras vs Courier Aus Open cant remember the year (again!) but it was just after Pete's coach was diagnosed with cancer and was very emotional
Rafter vs Ivanisevic Wimbledon Final

Women's matched that I'll never forget:
Seles vs Graf french open final 1992
Seles vs Graf Aus open final 1993 (the best quality of womens tennis ever imo)
Seles vs Graf US open final 1995 (the atmosphere was so charged)
Hingis vs Graf French open final 1999
Hingis vs Capriati Aus open final

not all of them had the highest quality of tennis but the tension and back-story made them so you just could not take your eyes off the tv.
