What's the best way for me to improve?

Hi all,

I'm 35 and have been playing since high school. 185 lbs @ 5'8". Currently somewhere in the 4.0-4.5 range (though probably closer to 4.0).

I took lessons for about 3-4 years continuously, took several years off of lessons and have now started hit with the coach at the local university who was a former D1 player once a week. Also, i've been hitting the gym about 2-3/week and the conditioning seems to be helping.

So...what else should I be doing? Keep on doing this? Change anything up? I'm also paying special attention to what I eat and have begun reading Tennis Training:Enhancing on-court performance by Kovacs.

Any other recommendations, books or otherwise? I'm enjoying these threads!

What are your goals?

If you are 4.0-4.5 it would be quite easy to join a tennis group and play matches for fun and exercise without going all "high performance."
If your goal is to compete in "Open" tourneys, then you'll need some coaching, practice time, fitness regimen.

Everyone plays tennis for different reasons and the nice thing is you can play at any level if you find the right competition. Personally I have limited recreational time so I'd rather be playing than practicing and working out. Pros have the opposite issue where they will practice and workout way more than they play. But it's their job. For me its recreation.
