What's the reason the ATP ranking points distribution is worse than it was before?

By comparison:

Before 2009 (points for each round in Slams) - note: it was 1000, 700, 450 etc. but I doubled it to avoid confusion

W - 2000
F - 1400
SF -900
QF - 500
etc.

Since 2009:
W - 2000
F - 1200
SF - 720
QF - 360

So what's the real reason the ATP lowered the point reward for each round (except for the W)? Is it because they want to exalt the winners rather than "point grinders" (a la Davydenko in the old days playing 30 tournies in a season)

Edit: and wy did WTA decide to keep the old point distribution?

Very strange, however I think you might be on to the right rack. To give more focus on those who actually get the big wins in the end and not those who just consistently go deep...

Maybe they should introduce the new rule to the WTA to avoid players like Wozniacki at no 1

I think someone already mentioned that if using the ATP system, Caro still has the most points and hence still is #1. Anyway, Caro is the IW champion today, if you don't want to congradulate her then don't disparager her.
