What's with all the whiskers on tour?

A large percentage of the male pros seem to play with a week's worth of stubble. What's the deal? Wake up too late to shave?

I'd say the proportion of stubble-bearing tennis players is roughly equal to that of the general population.

Possibly, but most people with stubble, at least in my area, are picking cans out of the garbage, not performing in front of millions of people on television.

well I don't know what socal's like, but many guys have facial hair of some sort here, including stubble.

Many movie stars and other performers (including other athletes) sport facial hair. I don't see the big deal.

It's the twisted image that the media started enforcing in the 90's, shaved face chest and legs which is anything but natural, and a lot of people take their ideals from TV.

yeah that definitely was the case. it seems like hair has been making a comeback in recent years with guys like hugh jackman and whatnot. Even guys like brad pitt, johnny depp, and leonardo di caprio do whatever they can to salvage some semblance of facial hair.

Umm because they don't want to look like girls maybe? What male wants to have a smooth face like silly little bieber (not even bieber wants that face actually, but he got no choice)?

I have no problem with a beard, like Youzhney sports. I just don't understand the scraggly scruff look that guys like Del Potro and Nadal have.

why shave? hair on face is manly.

True, but it's itchy as hell. I had a full beard for about 3 months and the only way I could make it bearable was to shave my neck area(below the jawline) every 2 days. Not to mention that you need to do some "maintenance" work on your beard if you don't want to look like a hobo.

It is more comfortable to just shave, even if you manliness level drops. :)

yeah i agree with you on that. if you can't grow a full beard, save your dignity and clean shave.

Actually I think I know what you're talking about now. Novak's guilty of this

You can't really classify that as a goatee or stubble. It just looks lazy and bad. And I'm sure he isn't sporting that out of style.

for some i believe its superstition. they enter a tournament and as long as theyre winning they dont shave

my beard grows rather slowly (it takes about 1 1/2 weeks to be as noticable as it is on monaco there i guess) but i like it as a means of not looking the same every day. ill have it grow for a week or so and then shave again. a little facial hair isnt bad on a guys face imo as long as it doesnt look messy. and it really makes for a very different look compared to fully shaved

Seriously....it's enough that females are obsessed with neatness on their own faces/bodies. Don't expect males to be so pathetic too... When will people learn, looks don't matter. It's all about winning. If you win and you are ugly, you are a winner. If you lose and you are pretty, you are a loser.

Even today, everyone wants to be like Borg, who is probably the coolest SOB to ever play the game. He had a superstition that he wouldn't shave until he lost, hence the scruff at the end of tournaments. So I'd bet a lot of guys try to pull that off. The long hair is a bit old, not to mention hot and a PITA to maintain, but scruff will probably never go out of style.

They probably do it because they can. I would go 3-4 days without shaving if I could but I have a job where I have to shave every day. On the weekends I usually don't shave though. I just don't care to take the time to do it. Plus, a little stubble is good. ;-)

Once it gets too long though its pretty annoying and irritating so 3-4 days is usually my max.

This always comes as a massive shock to people from the area, but Southern California is not the entire world.

Please tell me you are a woman for caring so much about beards.

That's what I was going to say. But in Andy Murray's case he NEEDS to shave-he's got the ugliest beard I've ever seen.

BTW, your sig is wrong. If the median IQ was 100, then half the people will be below it.
For a normal distribution, like IQ, the mean and median are the same.

If you really want to get technical, it's not fully half because a certain percentage are exactly at 100. That holds true for both the median and the mean. However, 99.9% of the people reading it won't realize that.

Well, that's one way. You could also simplify it and say there are 4 people. Their IQ's are 145, 140, 135, and 100. The average would be 130, so only 25% are below that. It can also work the other way around.
