When a kids is ready for start tournament ?

Hi,

I am new as tennis dad and not really brother about tennis before my son start tennis.
he is just 10 years old in February and start last October 2010 and he likes very much tennis.

I want him to have fun in what he does
Winning or losing doesn't matter, but i don't want him to be demoralize because he cannot hit any ball.
(Sorry I come from France and my English is not that good)

He has only 6 months of tennis, Is it too soon to make he start very novice tournament ?

I asked his coach, he said go ahead, but my son is very very shy and i afraid he is not yet mature.

Here a video how he play
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-H6GV98IUs

Thanks for your help

Sorry...some of us have been posting here for a while and regularly debate these kinds of issues. TCF is another regular poster here with some strong thoughts on this very subject. Read through some of the recent posts here on training kids, tournament play, QuickStart tennis... you'll see quickly that this is not an easy answer.

It's great your son is liking tennis and he's got a good start. Personally, my son started at 5 and did not play a competitive match until he was 8, and that was probably too soon.

It is what i think, 6 months is really short.
I will follow your advice and search in this forum

Thanks

A "poisson d'avril"??? But TCF will bite anyway.

Even I am not that dumb! I will let someone else evaluate that video. You all know what I would say before I even type a thing. I would love to have a 'word' with that other coach who advised to start playing tournaments though.

Daughter just played a pusher! Guess what happened.............

She pushed and lost in a 3rd set tiebreak. Tournament play is NOT GOOD. Win lose is never the point. She practices with 12s, boys 10s/12s and the desire not to lose cost her today. Now considering she doesn't push in practice she did good to get to tie break. Sad part TCF when she hit she won every point and game when she pushed she lost most. Today we took a step back as the desire to win clouded her mind and she fell apart. My fault, as even during the 2 min coaching I stressed hit, and should have said "I don't care if you hit every ball long. Get set up bend knees and drive the ball. Do that and you accomplish today's task.". Tie break wins 5 points hits one out starts pushing and loses 12-10! My fault today.

So start tournaments when your kid understands why they are playing, and have specific task to complete and can winning or losing follow the plan.

I hear you. The good thing is that you and she know what happened and realize it hurts her game. She just needs to be patient, pick her spots, then hit away and try to learn to beat a pusher instead of joining in.

But the difference is that you and your daughter will come up with a plan to stop it from happening....while the girl she played and her parents probably think she is the next great tennis player as they have no idea that she will hit a brick wall one day.

In a few years lets she which girl is still playing tennis!

when is a kid ready to play tournaments? well it depends on what continent you live.:) if you live in the "right" continent you can play at age 2  but if you live in the "wrong" continent you have to wait until........... 14:)

I'm friends with the other girls parents. During the tiebreak they felt it was a great match. Nice crowd cheering both girls. I was stoic and they couldn't understand why. A pusher was able to take a girl who hits well, down to her level with 15 shot moonball, pushing! Blocking rallies. We were up I was quiet we were down I was quiet. The plan is the plan and I could see we were falling short. In a perfect world i would have defaulted her. Sounds radical but the fact we talked about what was needed during tiebreak and she decided to continue the pushers path was a problem. Coach will address on Monday.

Fast forward to ride home. Normally we don't talk tennis when she leaves court. All that is needed to be said takes place then n there. Today because she was so sad I asked why you sad. Because you lost, or didn't do what you were told. Win or lose today you were alone as you decided to play a new style. When you are alone everything is harder. Today we lost, not in the tiebreak in your belief that winning is important.

So I asked if you wanna win I'll put you in QS? No daddy.

OK If you wanna learn and do what coach ask well continue play regulation matches.

Girl was #1 seed a pusher we lost 12-10. THANK GOD WE LOST. We almost won and that would have been HORRIBLE! Wife even agrees on this. Daughters on play date, beach Jet Skis tomorrow. Smile back we will have fun and next week back to fight USTA tourneys are every thing vs Coach technique and plan to get better approach.
I'm feeling eliminating 10U may backdoor us into a better overall training plan.

you played team tennis, hence the coaching,,,,,,,,,, which is less stressful,

not too many kids understand what specific tasks to complete and follow the plan,,,,,,,,that could go all the way past teens

pushers come in all shapes sizes levels,,,,,, heck Murray is a pusher :) so she better get used to them, the sooner the better IMO

Murray is not a pusher in any way that resembles what we are talking about. Bunted strokes, pitty pat serves, 15 moon balls in a row.

Sorry to break it to you, some cultures are very different than American culture. Thus what works in one country can have the opposite effect in another.

Seriously though....why didn't the USTA run a 5-10 year test? Why not run both regulation the way it was and a parallel Quickstart program. Monitor kids from both, evaluate tennis longevity and tennis skills. Have real scientific proof which works better here, not in Belgium.

So it takes 5-10 years to do it right and see what truly works for American kids. Whats the rush? We are not producing champs anyway, not one high performance kid seems ready to bee the next big thing.

So do it right, find out which method is the best, then you have the right system for the next 300 years.

sorry to break it to you, the american culture is a melting pot of everything, there are many in the US that still hold on to their culture and way of life here in the US,,,,,,,surprisingly:)

Look TCF just saw few 9 year olds that have been playing orange beat other highly ranked 9 year old who have been playing regulation, using green, their strokes were more beautiful and they hit harder.

Great question. No, match play followed by play date with lunch is enough. She is in top 32, and our goal was sectional. I was told by Andy Gladstone USTA FLA what we needed to get her in last year. We are there so now I'm stuck with a mix of tourneys ~3 until June to keep her tourney fresh. Before Fla eliminated 10U we planned super series and Desig only ~7 a year after. That's changed to maybe some Team Tennis and no USTA events for 2012.

Practice only is probable with the # of 10U @ academy but you do need match play of some sort. Considering joining a ladder @ club also.

Basically trying to figure I out????? Isn't that the USTAs job to help us parents figure it out!

Orange on regulation court? Transition for yellow ball player to short court @ 9 is a bit much to ask.

no orange was on 60, then they played 9 year olds who had been playing both reg/green, the tournament was green

OK USTA, bring the best orange, green, yellow for a 3 day clinic. Judge play on strokes. See where the avg. Is and adjust QS/regulation on that.

Hey between you, n TCF we are going to solve the us junior tennis problems!

that is what I am trying to do, but TCF thinks it is a cultural issue, we can not solve and change a whole society, it evolves slowly. You do not sound American, where are you from?

anyway here is "lazy" Murray in Spain at 18, gotta love those strokes LOL!!!!!! hate to see him at 10

No US born raised. Understand my background team sports. Just think this tennis is crazy!
Started sports @12. You couldn't start tennis that late. Very different and why USTA comparisons don't work had several Rudy types on my teams as well as Agassi gifted guys. @ the end of day they both could compete. As a dedicated parent TENNIS is difficult. Structure, cost etc.

I just feel a system that identifies the gifted and hard worker while EDUCATING parents is needed.

So it is a multi pronged approach. It truly is. Now with Team Tennis, QS, regulation, rookies I felt it was all there and abruptly ending 10U wasn't correct. I would have eliminated 18s, dropped rookies to 8s, combined girls n boys under 11, added Green Ball and allowed regulation @10s and for every division coaching like WTA 1 time between sets with official present.

no sure I would combine boys and girls U10, boys getting beat by girls..... not pretty :)

anyway here is a video of 9 year olds "pitty patting" on orange on 60 on red clay, now TCf is going to come in and say this is in europe with different mentality than the US, it will not work in the US

Yeah, promotional videos are usually pretty impressive. It is what it is, I have seen the most uncoordinated kids in the world look great hitting those orange balls. They still are brutal when they try to advance to regular balls, no matter what the age. And the coordinated kids look great with regulation after a few months.

I have been doing this along time. Low compression balls, the whole thing. Yup, every kid looks great with orange or back in the day balls with holes punched in them for the same effect. But the fact is, many people stink at tennis using regulation balls, no matter how long they stick with slow balls. Tennis is not an easy game. This notion that Quickstart will magically make a huge percentage of kids who try tennis into solid players with regulation balls at age 12 is laughable. Now if they want to stick with orange their entire life, whatever.

Most folks can take tennis lessons for decades, use any ball to start, and always are pretty bad. Its one of the ugly secrets of tennis coaches world wide. So Quickstart will add to that total...which is great, adds more casual players. But don't try and tell me it will magically make better players long term. Athletic people can do great with regulation balls and have forever.

I will leave this topic alone and do my thing. I will continue teaching with low compression balls for a few months, then regulation as the kids are ready. I will continue trying to keep my students away from structured tournament competition for as long as possible.

I have seen some kids I taught at age 5-8 now old enough and they are doing great in the 14s-18s. Some are now playing in college. Many moved around and had a variety of coaches, always regular balls though. So my way has done alright by some folks. Yup they had some balls bounce over their heads as kids, struggled through the battle to keep hitting away when the balls sailed out of bounds.....but came out pretty dang good on the other side. A solid coach can produce good players out of decent athletes, no matter if he never used a low compression ball in his life.

This old dog will do what he has done for a long, long time. Enjoy Quickstart, I hope it does all you hope it does, my players will catch up with the tournaments in the 12s and 14s.

Oh forgot to mention. Asked the Tournament director about QS. None of them were ever asked. 12s are already full so no 10s will get in, reduced draw to 32 makes this worse. Since the decision they have been to many tennis centers none of which will get grants or modify courts for QS. QS attendance has been abysmal, such that they have had to call each parent to
verify they want to play QS. Many no shows demanding refunds, disputing CC charges! Lastly amongst them they believe within 2 years regulation 10s will be back.

He may love it but they dont teach it.

No mention of QS anywhere! Call them as a parent and ask when is the QS program begin. $300 hr they ain't given up a court for QS!

Can you name for us 10 current great players from Hungary? How about 5? 2?

Do you know the culture there? Are the kids rewarded for going for the strokes? Or rewarded for just getting the ball back like here?

The more you defend Quickstart the farther I want to direct my kids away from it.

Yes, and this video you posted shows exactly why Quickstart is boring after a few months.

The first 45 seconds the kids never take more than 2 steps either way. About 3-4 times the entire time do the kids even run more than a few steps.

Thats what Quicikstart is, boring. And the better the athlete, the quicker they get bored.

then QS is boring in Europe as well and here in the US, even in Mars

Prro for all we know Play and Stay there results in mediocre players and the good players use regulation. Did Fed use it for a month? Or did he use it for 3 years?

Unless we could find out the history of every top 500 European player, we don't know how many used Play and Stay and for how long.

there are few pros in our area from Hungary with kids that are top 10 in our section, they all went through QS for 4-5 years

Did Agnes every use mini tennis? Its amazing how everything you find fits into your opinion perfectly.

So what if the top 10 kids who used Quickstart are limited while Agnes developed because she never used it? So maybe you just gave us proof Play and Stay results in mediocrity?

Guess what? Florida is a little bit of a tennis hotspot. You know how many of the top 10 kids in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s, 18s went through mini tennis? None.

Hmmm.....Agnes started tennis at age 6 with her parents acting as her coach.

So when a parent trains a kid using regulation from age 6 she becomes a top pro. When kids use mini tennis for 4-5 years they are "top 10" in the NE.

Sounds like regulation is the way to go from age 6. I think I just convinced myself that regulation will produce the best players!

yeah like this top 10 pro from romania another eastern european nation who tough his kids QS from age 2 while the rest were using reg,

his seven year old won a U12 tournament! she competes in green

Goodness, how lame is the NE section? Dad sounds like the poster child of how not to raise a tennis kid. TRN has her record, letting a 7 year old get her brains bashed out in worthless low ranked tournaments.

Priceless stuff.

why? so you can take your kids to climb the monkey bars at the park while the rest are playing QS. TCF you are homeschooling, you have issues with Rules and Formates, you like to do things your way nonchalant, that is apparent.

Yes Everet does use QS. They are also a USTA training center Aren't they?

Well in a few weeks I'll know as we will attend Everett or Macci. A Few weeks this summer. Along with Art, and Dance.

I'll provide a full unbiased report on the true implementation of QS.
