When Djokovic wins Wimbledon Lite 2022, should it count as no 21?

Should Novak's 7th Wimbledon title count as slam no 21 in the Slam Race?

Let's be real, slams are slams for a reason.

Or many reasons.

1. BO5

2. Two weeks.

3. 7 rounds.

4. The whole elite is there.

6. Whoever does well gets his ranking improved or greatly stabilized.

So is it really a slam this year?

With Zverev, Rublev, Medvedev, Federer, and (probably) Nadal missing, plus back-from-injury even-more-useless Berrettini, plus Thiem being a journeyman now, and no points handed out -------- one has to wonder how this year's title can even count as a proper slam win.

We all know Novak will win this exhibition event, so we can feel free to limit the discussion to whether Djokovic winning W22 should count as a slam or not.

Obviously, those of you naive enough to think that someone else can lift this Grass Exho trophy can feel free to discuss Wimbledore's status irrespective of Djokovic and the Slam Race.

A slam is a slam. It’s BO5 with a field of 128 players. Who those players are doesn’t decide whether it’s a slam or not. End of story imo.
Sticking asterisks next to an event solely because one player is absent is just ridiculous. Were that player in attendance, who is to say they aren’t going to suffer an upset, an injury, a default or fail to perform to the highest level needed to win.
No one knows who will win a slam. No one! Odds are one thing, certainty does not exist in sport.
If Djokovic wins, of course it’s No 21.
If he doesn’t it’s Number whatever for the one who does.
 
I don't like Djokovic and I think that's clear to most people here. However. the entry list for Wimbledon has pretty much everyone still on board to play, no huge boycott or anything that you could attach an asterisk too. If Novak wins, of course it counts as a slam. Now if half the top 10 decided to boycott I may disagree but as it stands, pretty much everyone is there.

No asterisk, and I'm not even a Djoker fan. Wimbledon 2022 deserves a historical footnote for the political decision - it's worth mentioning what happened as a curiosity of sports history. But there doesn't need to be an asterisk for the winner.

Does AO 2022 count as 21 for Nadal since Djokovic was prevented from playing? I mean AO is the same for Djokovic as FO is for Nadal in terms of domination.

He didn't take my gift, probably got lost in the mail, so I am trying to make it up to him.

Most of those players are missing the tournament because of injury, not due to the ban or a boycott:
Nadal
Zverev
Berrettini
Nadal
Federer.

And then you want to actually suggest that Khachanov or Rublev or Medvedev could win Wimbledon despite never going past the 4R? Lmao.

I would understand such a thread after we see everyone who is there play a few rounds.

Would YOU skip a slam because of a needle? Of course not. Nobody sane would.

Conclusion: Novak didn't really want to play there...

As experience shows, the wave of initial saltiness and asterisk-marking passes pretty quickly.

All these players aren't playing? I mean specifically because (1) Wimbledon won't let them, or (2) they're boycotting. Not usual reasons like injuries, simply choosing not to. So I guess the question is really only about Nadal and Berrettini

It should count as 21 - but only because Djokovic never had the chance to defend his legendary W19.

We basically have Djokovic as no 1, and then a big gap and then Shapo and Otte.

Kinda like Belgrade 250 if it were upgraded to a 500 and the clay replaced by grass.

Nadal will play if his treatment this week is successful. There’s no guarantee of course, but it’s more likely to be successful than not according to the medical stats on that procedure.

Never understand why people do this. It is the same with some Rafans celebrating RG before the final is played. What's the point? If he wins you can celebrate soon enough...

Djokovic is the favourite, with Nadal a distant second and players like Hurkacz, Auger, Cilic having a chance to surprise, but all it takes is one slip on the lawn, or simply a quality opponent to make things interesting.

Its OK to make such predictions during the actual event when we can see how everyone is playing, but not when we are several weeks out.

1. Thanks for the Berrettini info.

It makes a huge difference. Now that we know the a limping Italian Stallion is playing, Wimbledore is a class A slam.

2. I can't imagine what kind of procedure they can hope to get done in ten days (or so) which they couldn't have done before.

This foot thing has been a years-long problem, so the only way he'll be playing Wimbledore Lite would be to change his plan and take the vaccines after all.

I don't believe in miracles.
