Predictions?

So with the new rankings, Federer has 6600 points, and Nadal now has 6055. What are your predictions when Nadal takes over?

I calculated the points they must defend up till and including the US Open....Federer must defend 1850 (Canada Final, Cincy Win, US Open Win)
Nadal has only 630 to defend (only a Canada semi, Cincy 1st round, Us Open 4th round, and the Stuttgart Tourney he won last year) but I already saw an interview on ESPN Deportes that Nadal said his next tournament would be Canada, so he clearly is withdrawing from Stuttgart this year and rightfully so.

Keep in mind both players are planning to play the same schedule, Canada, Cincy, Olympics, and the US Open....and that the Olympics will be added points for both since there is none to defend.

Nadal is now leading the Race 955 to Federer's 685 and Djokovic's 649.

When does Nadal realistically become the new #1?

Nadal realistically became the new #1 when he won Wimbledon 2008 :)

Okay but point-wise, I think Nadal doesn't become #1 till later on in the year. The hard-court season has been tough for him last year and I think if he maintains form and does not have any injuries, he'll easily have semis or better in USO and probably surpass most of his early round losses, putting him very close to Federer after USO. Then, it's probably a matter of a few tournaments. Might come down even to the Masters Cup.

So my answers is no sooner than USO, no later than Masters Cup :)

The big question is, as it has been for the last couple of years, how much does nadal have left after his efforts in the first half of the season.

You could argue that Federer has played almost the same amount of tennis but he always looks fresh at hardcourt season. Djokovic didnt play much wimbledon so could be fresher for USO.

But this is normally where Nadal just burns out after a tough season.

Whether in points or not, Nada is clearly #1 right now. Gawd help the rest of the mere mortals on tour if he ever figures out how to adjust to hardcourt. (personally I believe it will forever be his achilles heel. too much pounding for his excessive footwork, grinding his knees etc).

OH Man, he is already #1 NOW, right at this moment. and he will be YEAR ENDING #1 even if he stops playing tennis for the rest of the year. Sure, the computer points may say otherwise, but to the Tennis experts and hall of famers, he is #1 for this year.

He DID withdraw from Stuttgart, for the record....

THANK YOU LORD. i always thought he was nuts for playing that right after Wimby. for what reason, maybe he needs the garantee money to buy his girl something special ??? anyway, he needs to rest for next 2 month and prepare for Olympics doubles and US open. So I say to RAFA:: SKIP ALL THE MASTERS SERIES TIL THE US OPEN AND JUST PLAY THE OLYMPICS DOUBLES AND GO STRAIGHT TO US OPEN,,PLEASE,,,FOR YOUR KNEE SAKES.:)

Federer has a lot of points to defend between now & USO. I see Nadal getting it sooner rather than later. He really deserves it aswell (2 GS & a SF GS appearance).
