When Federer wins a tiebreaker in a Grand Slam final/semifinal, he is 23-6 in that match (Losses were 2008 Wimbledon final, 2011 US Open semifinal, 2012 Australian Open semifinal, 2013 Australian Open semifinal, 2014 Wimbledon final, 2015 Wimbledon final)

When he loses a tiebreaker in a Grand Slam final/semifinal, he is 1-11 (win was 2006 Wimbledon final)

Compare that with Djokovic, when he wins a tiebreaker in a Grand Slam final/semifinal, he is 12-1 in that match (loss was 2013 French Open semifinal. When he loses a tiebreaker in a Grand Slam semifinal/final, he is 10-7 (wins were 2011 Wimbledon semifinal, 2011 US Open semifinal, 2011 US Open final, 2012 Australian Open semifinal, 2012 Australian Open final, 2013 Australian Open final, 2013 Wimbledon semifinal, 2014 Wimbledon final, 2015 Australian Open final, 2015 Wimbledon final)

I reckon Nads is tougher than both TBH.
But yeah, this thread is basically showing that Novak is quite resilient.
Novak gives up the least amount of leads, his the best at deciding sets, has a great ability to come back after losing a set even against his biggest rivals, Nole has the best record of recovering from a 1 set loss. Nadal lags behind giving up more leads, and isn't as good as Nole in deciding sets.

Djock is much better in coming back from losing a tiebreaker than Fed... which translates to being mentally tougher.

how about the TB itself being a test of mental strength to an extent ?

fed's record in breakers is better than djoker's

this doesn't address when the the TBs are split - what happens

TBs were split b/w fedal in wim 06, AO 12
TBs were split b/w fed-djoker in wim 14, wim 15

not counting these, I have

fed at 21 W - 3 losses when only winning breakers
fed at 8 losses when only losing breakers

I think your word choice is spot on: Nadal is of course mentally tougher than Djokovic, and even more so than Federer. By mental toughness here, I think we both refer to staying calm under pressure and producing one's best tennis when really needed. Nadal is of course excellent at that, or at least was until the last year or so.

But Djokovic's resilience - both within a match and over the season - is probably better than Nadal's, and I think it has been for some time. By this, I mean (perhaps you did too?) ability to bounce back from a setback without letting it get to you. Djokovic has often come back from great disappointments and not let them faze him. This year, he recovered well from losing the Roland Garros final, and recovered well from losing the second set of the Wimbledon final very narrowly. Especially recently, but also early in his career, Nadal sometimes let such disappointments get to him for a while.

Great way of delineating mental toughness with resilience. Totally agree, Novak is the most resilient in shaking off disappointments and nadirs.
