I don't even really mean this to put down Nadal, but it was nice when there were random floaters like later career Dave who were talented enough to play some really good looking and fun to watch tennis on any given day even if they weren't serious contenders.

Seriously the guy has a permanent booth at Krispy Kreme in his honor but still finds the time to cleanly strike balls past peak Nadal on a slow court.

That serve unfortunately pretty much assured that Nalby wasn't going to be a rival to Fed.
Today's youngster lack talent than anything. Even Sinner (best out of them) nowhere close to ball striking ability of Nalbandian. Then you've kyrgios who pushes ball all time. *Facepalm*

Nalby choked spectacularly that day, but good job Rafa on pressuring him and eventually capitalizing on his collapse.
IMO Nalby was a super bad HC matchup for early Hardal, he was sort of a far more aggressive Davydenko, or maybe a Fed with a 2HBH - bad news either way. They didn't meet too often though.

even then he could have provided plenty of competition (see 04 AO or even 06 RG) if he'd stayed fit and motivated. Guy was flawed, but had very very rare raw ballstriking ability.

Kinda unrelated but I watched USO 2010 Final and Rafas backhand was AO2009 level. Half the time he was gaining control of rallies with the flat powerful backhand and finishing points off with the forehand.
