When pulling the cross, to prevent burning the string, I think the term is "fan".

Sometimes I use the Ronco Fanomatic, other times the Acme Autofanner

I use my fingernails pushing the string away from me towards the throat.

Tension 1 back so you only pull a short amount of cross through the mains when they are against you. You get to thread through a channel rather than up and down.

My butler fans the crosses for me while I pull the crosses through, I need one hand to pull strings and the other to sip my glass of champagne with my pinky out.

Yes really, but after posting that this afternoon I thought about that while stringing two bab frames. I found myself using my fingers in any way that was convenient.

Used fingers to fan the strings. Worked fine, and faster than grabbing awl.
