When should Venus retire?

I think Venus is retired now. She just won't announce it officially like Serena did in order to avoid a big farewell tour and the accompanying attention.

idk she seems to train a lot still - certainly way more than serena - i dont think she'll ever play many regular tour events again but you know she might pop up for Wimbledon and the US Open, especially doubles

Big Venus fan aren't ya?

Venus is everything. Kind of the same reasons I became a Nadal fan, peak Venus was crazy, the way she was flying around the court faster than everyone, barely missing balls and had incredible power but was clinical at net, she just made it all look so entertaining. No one on the WTA pulls me like that and hasn’t since :(

Sell those tickets! Should have seen the line when Venus introduced her Eleven line at Steve & Barrys. Never saw so many at the store for Autographs.

Venus is aging like fine wine.

She also seems more grounded relative to Serena (or maybe she has been out of the news longer) and that is why she is my favorite Williams sister.

She can retire whenever she wants.

Dude, who are you? I used to work in the Steve & Barry's corporate office on Long Island (and yes, I have some stories!). From my recollection, the Starberry line pretty much dwarfed any other celebrity collaborations we did, aside from maybe Bitten with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Yes. She has done the slow fade for so long that most are probably barely aware she's still playing.

For some reason S&B opened their store 20 miles out of town. Best items were never in-stock. Still own some sweats from the store.

Ah, OK, for some reason I had the impression that you worked for them. Steve was a total doughnut, BTW (yeah, I said it). They probably opened the store in that location because the landlord paid them to open it. That's the only way they ever actually made money.

Yesh, more horses, cows, & goats than shoppers out in the boondocks.

her youtube is very good - i would say we should start a separate thread for it but i think people around here aren't mature enough to actually speak about the content and not make cracks about her being old or ugly or whatever

She’s gorgeous :D

In a couple of the matches last year, she had some close moments. And it's still a thing of beauty when that forehand is working.
Venus isn't going to do a whole salute at the US Open when she decides to leave. Not her style.
Also, King Richard was such a celebration of Venus. She was everything to and for the family. She had to make it for any of Serena's history-making career to happen let alone all the young women she inspired when she won those four majors in two years. So there's always that. Too bad someone had to get slapped at the Oscars and all that, but a movie about Richard WIlliams.. it was never going to be orthodox.

She was in the AO final in 2017 and Wimbly final against Mugu in 18. My Abacus says that was not 10 years ago.
Ok I get 10 years was a stretch but let’s try to be a little honest and objective, since 2020 her record is 4-21 ‍ so she really isn’t a factor. It is the equivalent of having a great baseball player hanging on well past their prime and batting .190.

Facts, slay bestie :D
She’s playing Auckland and then the AO.
I was surprised at how King Richard was 80% about Venus. Im sure that was intentional bc Serena probably wants her own movie later on.

I don’t think she is going to win anymore slams in singles. She could be competitive in doubles, but probably not wining any tournaments either.

OH, I'm sure the Serena biopic scripts are already written and sitting in studios file cabinets - or hard drives.

She's looked bad for quite some time now. At least Serena was still making semi-finals during her last few active years (2020-2021)

Venus hasn't gone to a final since WB 2017 where she lost handily to Mugu

Especially when you still look this good:

Literally one of the best outfits of 2022. I'd like to see her and Serena play a light-medium schedule for just 1 season on the doubles tour. Maybe playing all the majors, 1000s and any other US/Canada/Mexico events that they fancy to stay sharp.

She will take some WC’s and play some doubles. I’m here for it.
I want the doubles to be serious though, not just a jolly. Like if she can't play with SW, pair with a younger player for the whole season and see what she can pass on/what they can achieve with her experience and their youth/hunger/athleticism.

Her summer kits this year were out of this world! I would love Venus/Serena dubz at the slams next year.

It would be so cool if she sponsored some players once she retires and makes bespoke kit for them. Sis has developed such classy and standout attire of late which shows up a lot of the apparel giants' offerings.
