I have plenty of years yet for the doubt to seep into my mind...

What was your own journey with them? Curious how frequent it was and if there was a certain type your gravitated to.

I think I changed a couple of times early … and then stuck with an Odyssey putter. My driving and putting was pretty good from the start … the problem was everything in between :-D

This style/shape …

At least it's a nice classic shape rather than some ridiculous dreck such as this.

No idea why talking about putters made me remember a curved face putter brought to golf one day. The idea was it got the ball rolling immediately rather than a launch/skid first. I hit some putts with it and had the thought it actually did feel like ball rolled immediately off the strike … but just looked to weird for me.

Ever tried a putter like this?

I heard from a competitive pickleball player that a good paddle costs between $250-$350. That's fine, about the same as a good racket these days and you don't have to restring....but then he told me the paddle will only last 2-3 months before becoming "de-laminated" and illegal to use in tournament play. If that's true then that's possibly the stupiest thing yet about pickleball.
It is not true

Over the next 10-20 years, there will be a gold rush of people installing PB courts in their yards. ¼ the size of a tennis court. Fraction of the cost? I also think we’re going to see driveways painted with lines for use with a $70 net. BOOM. 24/7 PB at home. If only the tennis junkie could have done this! the courts eventually becoming as ever-present in certain communities as backyard pools.

Not so according to several sources. Currently there are more than 60 national organizations across the world in the International Federation of Pickleball. Last count I heard was more than 36 million players across the globe. Besides the US, Pb has taken off in Canada, India, Spain, UK, France

Padel is very popular in Mexico, Argentina, the UK, Spain and other parts of Europe. Less so in other areas. However, it is supposedly played in more than 80 countries. As of Jan 2023, the estimated number of players, worldwide, was 25 million.

IF these numbers are correct, Pickleball may have already surpassed Padel in popularity across the globe. But can't say for sure exactly what the posted numbers really mean
Note I don't play padel or pickleball but in my travels here are the countries I have seen padel courts... Turkey, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Latvia, Sweden, Norway, UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and to a much lesser extent Canada and the US.

Here are the countries I have seen pickleball courts... Canada, US and Mexican resorts full of Canadians and Americans.

This is anecdotal evidence but it's probably much more reflective of what's actually happening as far as popularity globally. I would also caution against using any stats sourced from pickleball groups themselves as they are notorious for exaggerating.

Just out of curiosity what happened to racquet ball ? I remember people saying in the 80’s that racquet bell would end and take over squash, but you don’t hear anything about it these days. Off course squash has declined badly as well but is still played at the Commonwealth Games;
We really don’t know where pickleball will progress to and it’s interesting to see how each country deals with it. In Australia, Tennis Australia is trying to incorporate the sport under the tennis banner as they have done with cardio tennis, and hot shots ( 10 and under tennis),
I think what the IOC will do in collaboration with hosting nations ( and I could be wrong ) is actually put every sport under the microscope of investigation assess it’s ROI because money right now is a bit tight and if countries make either a direct loss or flow on loss to their overall economy then the Olympic Games will be something countries may not want to host.
I think it’s a superb event and the build up is great, you get new faculties and tourism booms but others don’t necessarily see it that way,

Pickleball is for chumps. It's only popular in the US where they are destroying tennis courts in order to advance Pickleball, the stringer's nightmare, as the next junk sport. So yeah, "next century" ... it's the closest answer to "never".

They're coming
China can have pickleball for all I care. I can’t see it ever becoming an Olympic sport. It might be a fun pastime for many but, compared to other sports, it requires a lot less skill than most and does not deserve to be an Olympic sport.

I’d rather see squash earn a seat at the Olympic table.

Interesting article. Seymour Rifkind -- heavily quoted in that piece -- claims to be a 5.0 player. I just looked him up. He is "NR" which means he doesn't have a rating. (He may have BEEN a 5.0 ... but DUPR is a rating system where games older than six months drop off your rating.) If Rifkind isn't actively playing, he's no longer a 5.0.

But he certainly is a big self-promoter. I hope he's successful at expanding pickleball internationally.
