When will Rune realise he isn't part of "the new big three"

There's a fine line between confidence and arrogance, Rune consistently compares himself to Carlos and Jannik and back when Alcaraz won Wimby 2023 Rune claimed that Alcaraz had a "two slam lead", like what makes him think he will win a slam at all I mean the guy's talented but he is 21 and world no.17 and he is claiming that he is in a new big three with Sinner who has won a slam and #1 and Alcaraz who is a four time slam champion and younger than Rune.

If someone else overtakes him and solidifies themselves in that spot. If nobody does, maybe when he hits about 24 you can start to abandon all hope, as is happening/about to happen with Felix right now.
Step one has already happened with Ben Shelton (also age 21) having overtaken him in the rankings. Now, the question is whether Shelton can solidify himself in that position (and I could see that going either way). Meanwhile Fils, who is more than a year younger, is coming close to supplanting Rune as well.

Shelton is definitely overperforming after his early step back in Australia, not sure Fils has done anywhere near enough yet to be in that boat, good as his Wimbledon and Hamburg runs have been. Musetti is another one trying to get a look in right now. Holger definitely has his work cut out staying in the picture.

He's got that something to be there. Whether he definitely does or remains as a top20 player for the rest of his primer, is up to him. No propaganda or egos is going to do it for him at this point. Start to do the work that expectation demands.

Plus, there is not even a big 2 right now.

Fils up to #20 in the live rankings with the Hamburg win today. I agree that he still has more to prove to be ahead of Rune, but he's closing the gap quickly.

Last year I was a bit skeptical about Fils but this year he really surprised me so far. Played some great matches! Looking forward to his progress. And even if I think that Rune actually has more potential, I have a hard time believing he manages to work things out.

He hasn’t won a title in like 2 years now lol

Rune will never win a slam. He has not got the mentality and never will have it. I can see him actually fading from the sport by his mid twenties.
Shelton is the one who may well be part of a new Big 3.

Shelton will win slams, he has the cajones and work ethic. He is relatively late to the game as i think he went to College, but he has the raw tools to win slams on all surfaces.

I hope so. He's one of the few Americans I've liked in a long time since the rest are boring, but he's one of the most raw players I've seen. The college system is definitely why, but it feels he's basically had to learn the game from scratch outside of his serve.

His serve is monstrous. The FH when on is the biggest the game has seen in terms of power and spin (dwarfs Alcaraz) and his BH is actually very solid and a good rally shot but he can smoke winners with it.
His movement is an issue at the moment as his forecourt game, but he has a willingness to learn and an insane work ethic and desire to be the best and belief in his abilities. Put that all together and you have a slam winner, he for a time was all over Sinner in their match in that last set and Sinner was playing well.
One of the reasons i always thought Djokovic got so rattled by Shelton at the USO is because he could see how great Shelton could be but he hated the bravado Shelton had. Ageing ATGs always take umbridge with up and coming raw talents with attitude who they can see have all the tools to win big in the future.
Contrast that with Rune. I watch him and i just dont see any raw materials there that say greatness. Not one shot is elite at any moment in time.

You think Shelton can beat Sinner/Alcaraz/Djoko consistently enough to win slams? He has some really bad stretches, like in 2023.

I'm skeptical.

Not even a slam semifinal. And all of his losses have been either tame straight set losses or 4 sets without putting up a proper fight. Not even a masters final. He’s playing worse than how he did in 2023
Also, if it's about the Paris masters win, Karen Khachanov also won Paris beating a bunch of top 10 players including Djokovic in the final.

I think from next season he will be too much for Djokovic for definite.
I think he will lose more than he wins v Alcaraz and Sinner next season but i could see him upsetting one or both at a Major.
2026 onwards i think he could well be Alcaraz main rival ahead of Sinner.

He did win the Paris Masters in 2022 when he was 19, since then he has only declined...

Musetti is better and more interesting than Rune to me at this stage in 2024. Of course, Rune has more potential long term, but I am more interested in seeing Musetti at the Olympics.

Why does Rune have more potential long term and why is that "of course"?

Musetti crushed the grass "season" and is now ranked ahead of Rune by one spot

Guys

He hasn't been the same since the weirdness with Patrick right around the time Halep got busted

What it tells us

As mentioned above Rune's mentality lacks that plus, focus, and determination to not lose. It seems he throws the towel after so early

I've seen him be an absolute dog in certain matches but also give up vs clowns like BWEH

Hard to pin down which Holger is gonna show up

Possible he wants it too much

Let’s see. Musetti has a slam semifinal just after turning 22. Rune is yet to make one
