When will Sampras come out and congratulate Roger?

for breaking his 7 Wimby singles title record.
I was a big fan of Pete, he was there when Federer won his 15th slam. Now I suppose Sampras would take the same gesture and congratulate Federer for winning the 8th Wimby. Although it is weird for one legend to keep congratulating the other for breaking his record/legends.

Sampras probably is a little mad, but as a gentleman and a fellow tennis legend, I think he would still do the right thing.

Pete may have to take a few days to heal if he has mild to severe butthurt over this.

He'll reach out to Roger eventually.

I thought the same. I am wondering where Pete is now. It's not because Sampras is obliged to do anything but because they have been good friends and Pete has usually been there in many historic moments of Roger's career to congratulate him. I thought he would be there among the center court crowds and have a hand shake with Rogi after the match.

Why should Sampras have to be there to see Federer breaking one of his records? Why should he have to congratulate him right now, publicly?
He doesn't owe anything to anyone nor has he to do what you perceive to be the "right thing". Even if he's mad about losing one of his most cherished records for the time being, I don't see the problem in that. At the end of the day, he's a flawed human being like the rest of us. He also has the right to have his ebbs and flows, without being chastised for not attaining your impossibly high standards of excellence.

I hope he does it privately.

The whole "tennis legends congratulating even greater tennis legends in front of the cameras and the whole world" is getting ridiculous.

I already feel awkward that players like Rod Laver wait in line in case that that new record is broken.

Generally agree.

Although I sincerely hope to see Margaret Court squirming with discomfort if and when Serena wins her 25th slam.

I mean it shows good sportsmanship, but it's also good sportsmanship to not expect that kind of thing.
A sore winner is as bad as a sore loser.
The main point remains however, is why does it need to be done in public, so idiots like us can gush and coo!?

I understand they are very friendly with each other so I'm sure they have been in contact and exchanged all the customarily friendly pleasantries...

Also quite true. The players owe us nothing more than playing the matches they recieve prize money and sponsorship for, and following the rules of tournaments they enter.
Anything else is extra.

Pete remains the fast grass GOAT. Rog is the slow grass GOAT. Pete has no business congratulating Roger for eight wins on this surface, because he was terrible on it, going 1-1 for his career, with a loss to George Bastl.

To be honest, I don't think Sampras considered 7 Wimbledons an important record, just the 14 majors. It was the only record the media gave much attention to back then. And as others have said they are friends, he's not some Twitter moron who posts 24/7, if communicates with fed it won't be through social media.

It's funny, Sampras predicted Federer would get to 18 in 2006(there are articles on this), sounds like he's been pretty secure about this stuff for a while. Think his exact words were fed will be in Nicklaus territory(he's always been a bigger fan of golf than tennis)

Pete was the first person to congratulate Roger when Rog broke his biggest record, most majors won. He was sitting right there and clapping and smiling. He even participated in the Nike ad made to celebrate the occasion, "Congratulations Roger, you did it."

Records are individual markers. Within this mindset, nobody plays to be the greatest ever (nobody will live until the end of times), but to attempt things that haven't been done previously. This is why Sampras' records, while overtaken by Federer, remain his records in comparison to those whose achievements he surpassed. He was the first man with 14 majors and the first man with 7 Wimbledon titles. This is not a zero-sum game where the latest champion eclipses what his predecessors did. If that were the case, there would be no need for a Hall of Fame.

Does Usain Bolt "eclipse" Jesse Owens? Sure, if you want to be an idiot. But not if you love the sport and have the (seemingly endangered) ability to contextualise.

How do you know he hasn't? And if he hasn't so what?

I heard that Roger called up Pete :
"Hey Pete, I thought I'd call you just in case you wanted to congratulate me and tell me how great I am. If you were sleeping or busy I can call again at your convenience ? "

Pete: "No that;s okay, Rodge. Congrats ! Well done !"
- pause -

Roger: Is that all, Pete? Do you want to say anything more? Do you want me to hang up ?

Roger: Hello ? Hello ?

Oh for Pete's sake, why does Sampras need to come out every time Roger has done something and basically go "congrats you are better than me". I don't think Roger needs his ego stroked that much. Or is it that some people just want to see more people bow down to Roger. I really don't think Roger cares that much if everyone in tennis history hero worships him or not, he is not Martina Navratilova

"Oh and BTW Peter, I took the liberty of sending you a couple of my new Ro8er t-shirts. Maybe your kids might like them?"
