When will we see someone outside the top 4 win a masters again?

The last time someone outside the top 4 won a masters 1000 event was Soderling in 2010. When will we see another person do it, and who will it be? I think it could happen soon, as none of the top 4 are looking completely dominant right now. I'd like to see Del Potro or Tsonga win one.

Not this year, I think. Although the best chance is probably someone like Berdych @ Cincy

holly molly, I didn't even realize it's been almost 2 years. scary. it's hard to say, but I agree with you that Tsonga or DP might have the best chances but probably after the US swing. who knows? I'm kinda getting bored with top 4 winning everything, and top 3 winning all slams.

Nah it may very well be Canada or Cincy. Nadal possibly will miss Canada and maybe Cincy, Federer and Djokovic may be tired from the olympics/ Wimbey, so the top 10 really have a chance - players like Tsonga, Delpo, Berdych and why not Tipsy..

Just a friendly reminder that Berdych has lost the last 2 tournaments in the first round to stalwarts like Darcis / Gulbis

well, I can see your point, but really not sure. it's hard to predict these things. Not sure about Nadal (with his current health issues), but Novak is defending 1000 points at Rogers cup. Fed can gain there too. although, I've seen all masters last two years, I wasn't even thinking about the fact that top 4 won all masters last two years.

Tsonga, Delpo, Berdych would be nice. even Tipsy, but he's never even won a 500 event.

It would be awesome to see Lukas Rosol take one.. but I'm not sure if he would qualify for entry, his ranking was still pretty low the last time I checked.

Rosol will never in his career ever win a masters title. Beating Nadal at Wimby this year will be the only highlight of his career.

David Ferrer in Shanghai......since many top players skip that event.

Berdych, Del Potro, Tsonga, Isner, Ferrer have a good chance at Rogers Cup. Where Nadal is injured and iffy coming in, the other top 3 would be tired along with the other semifinalist.

It would be hard to adapt to Hardcourts with just 2 day practice....for the finalists.....so I can see the guys who left early make a good effort.

Heck Mardy Fish could finally bag the event. He had two great summers in a row.....maybe third time lucky.

Delpo has the best shot this summer at toronto and cincy. This is around the time where he plays his best. Tsonga could make a breakthrough at Paris and win there. Gael monfils made the final there a few times right? There seems to be something about the french doing well there I guess. As for shanghai, maybe nishikori could get hot as it's kind of his home master series tournament. He did play well at the end of last year too when he beat djokovic in three sets. In the next few years I could see players like raonic, goffin, dmitrov and istomin disrupting the top 4 and wins some big tournaments, but i guess we'll see what happens :)

In fairness, people said the same thing about Soderling, and he's made two Major finals and won some big tournaments.

I don't think Rosol is Soderling, I'm just saying.
